I think nobody really knows for sure if he's the victim here because of the nature of the relationship. If you know anyone in this situation, get them professional psychological help. Warn their parents, friends or other family. By the point you recognise it, they'll probably be way too protective over their love to be reasoned with. Talking to them might feel like talking to a religious zealot.
