• F.E.A.R. Is Ridiculous

The horror plot at points felt not as scary as it felt weird, with the really bizarre pregnancy shit and all. The first few games managed to achieve a really gross uneasy sort of feeling I can appreciate in a way, that warehouse scene shortly displayed in the OP video is something I still remember quite vividly.
Spookiest thing about F.E.A.R. is how Paxton Fettel looks like Nicholas Cage.
<slowmo voice> OH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT
Yeah, no. There were so many jump scares, most of them I can just list from the top off my head. The infamous ladder, Alma in the vents, Alma behind the window coming at you after you exit the room, the spooky ghost world where the skeleton comes out of the blood pool. Etc, etc...
Those are not jump scares though? The main element of a jump scare is a sudden, loud noise and movement. Most spooky events in the game are telegraphed by flickering and sound cues are usually played afterwards. There's exceptions but but the game doesn't usually rely on loud noises to startle you, most of it is subtle weird stuff which may not even scare you but it builds up tension I was rarely spooked playing fear, but it did manage to keep me on edge and some of the imagery made me a bit uneasy, which worked right for me

You can dance around the issue all you want but they are, by definition, jump scares.
A jump scare is a technique often used in horror films and video games, intended to scare the audience by surprising them with an abrupt change in image or event, usually co-occurring with a loud, frightening sound.
...the ladder scene is a silent camera shift and you get a full second view of alma's feet before it slowly pans up and she does absolutely nothing If that's a jump scare literally anything else is
F.E.A.R. deserves every single bit of praise it gets. More game developers need to study this game and understand what an ORGASMICALLY GOOD first person shooter is like. To elaborate, I'm talking about how well they made the AI and gunplay. For a game this old, the AI deserves so much praise, the human enemies are very responsive and quite interesting to fight against.
The AI in and of itself is an extremely unique thing. It uses a similar system as STALKER and, believe it or not, TES IV: Oblivion, among others. Goal Oriented Action Planning. It's super fascinating, and I wish we'd see more titles using it to its potential.

If that's not abrupt enough for you, you must be superhuman.

Not just the AI being smart in general, but all of the vocalizations and how enemies react to your actions is so believable and complex. Kind of ironic that what are supposed to be braindead clones feel more human than humans in most other games.

Well, now I know what I'm playing. Anyone else, Bundle Stars just coincidentally started a F.E.A.R. bundle sale for 3$ (everything including expansions).

I've heard that the AI's only objectives were: Flank player, stay together, find cover. The exceptional level design allowed the AI to perform exceptionally well despite being simple behaviors. Loads of cover in view of the player and multiple paths with cover for AI to jump between.
The replica soldiers had a lot of personality which is weird because they're all clones of the same guy and they're nothing like him or each other. I distinctly remember one part of the game where you overhear two of them talking about getting laid or looking at titties.

Man I played the game not more than a month ago I think, and I dont remember at all that double ladder jumpscare, did I manage to skip it somehow?

Man, I only got to play this after it went on sale on gog and was surprised at how great it was. To bad that tricked me into buying the other two games but oh well.

I think he means the actual sequels. They are inferior, but FEAR 2 was still pretty fun for what it was worth. Never played FEAR 3 though. I never heard anything good about it
I haven't got far in fear 3 but from what I remember of 2, it was just your average, mediocre ps3 era shooter.
Why do so few games have bullet time? Especially for power trip games, it makes you feel like a badass.
I loved the voice acting, the suspense and the pacing with this game. I'd be shitting myself with the paranormal areas because I didn't have any equipment that could deal with spooky ghosts but then I'd get to the elite clone troopers and I'd just have a field day flying through the air kicking cunts in the face. You'd just be breezing through the room, wailing on cunts while the last soldier tries to hide in the back yelling, "SQUAD DOWN!!! and the team leader further up is yelling, "TEAM! CHECK IN" It's incredibly poor tactics to broadcast your communications to the entire world but it really made the soldiers feel alive because you knew exactly what they were thinking and what they were planning. I had the utmost respect for the AI. They made amazing flanking manoeuvres when they could and tried to hide at the back when they knew shit had hit the fan and the best hope they had was trying to stay hidden until they had an opportunity to ambush you. [editline]20th May 2017[/editline] Don't buy or play Fear 3 though. I played like 5 mins and it's rubbish. I don't know if it gets better but I seriously doubt it. [editline]20th May 2017[/editline] Replica Soldier 1: Move up! Replica Soldier 2: No fuckin' way!
I keep having this bug when ever I play FEAR where when I get into a firefight in the offices after you talk to the IT guy it crashes as soon as some one fires the first round. I really want to play through it again but I can't find any fixes. Anyone know how to fix this?
I love it that people also love FEAR as much as I do, and keep remembering it every now and then. I even used to play this game to warmup before a CSGO game because of how many times I've played it, forcing me to look at corners and take the right approach in a fast and concentrated way, just like how you should in CSGO, and it worked surprisingly well. Aside from that, its a gem of a game. It gave me nightmares because fuck little scary girls, but goddamn were they worth it. It's like a huge power trip, knowing you're taking down a batallion of cloned super soldiers to the point of them screaming their lungs out because you just blew them the fuck up or introduced your shotgun's muzzle to their face.
i remember playing the shit out of the demo
I never did play the expansions for the first FEAR. Worth it?
I never did play the expansions for the first FEAR. Worth it?
It is the same gameplay with a worse story and extra weapons, totally worth it.
I never did play the expansions for the first FEAR. Worth it?
Extraction point for sure. Perseus mandate is kinda so-so.
