the only RP servers i've joined were gmod darkrp servers back in the day. and that was only to spawn as many large objects tied together by negative length ropes inside of underground paths and sewers as i could to cause a massive earthquake across the entire map.

I enjoyed some RP in gmod where you had like two mafia gangs who were trying to get turf. Shit started to get fun when you had 5 or 6 players in a gang.
The last time i had fun in RP was that facepunch Super Cereal RP server by Noss

This is why I always thought RTSes like Starcraft and Warcraft were best for roleplay maps, you can do so much shit and even RP an army and play multiple characters. I always thought that was cool as hell.

Well it can actually be seriously fun. I once met up with a Nigerian fisherman, a priest and a Texas cowboy to create a fishing cartel that eventually came at odds with another cartel in control of salt known as KONY. We eventually had a huge war that ended with the complete and utter destruction of both sides. There were many escapades along the way, such as the time I got abducted by a third party which promptly resulted in them getting fucked by both sides, and many other interesting stories along the way.

The whole thing is that you can't expect to give people guns and then have them not use it. You might as well make the guns not shoot actual bullets if you want players to not die. I understand that the idea is that you wouldn't use a gun randomly in real life, and roleplay is expecting you to act like a real person would.
Instead, they try to enforce this through admins and honor based rules, resulting in absolutely retarded shit like "Shoot to Miss" (If you're going to shoot anybody you have to [I]deliberately shoot away from them so they don't die right away)[/I] and "New Life Rule" (If you [I]do[/I] get shot, you have to pretend to be living a new life as the [I]exact same person[/I] and you can't return to the place that killed you or enact vengeance over the person who killed you), which doesn't make any fucking sense, which is what makes it so easy to grief.

Oh yeah the people that join just to advertise their servers are awful, but I've played on some good, regular FP'er run servers, like Boonclan which a few mods even tried out iirc.

I joined an RP server in The Specialists towards the end of the game's lifespan because those were the only servers up and that was fucking worse than the game just being dead

I remember Halo 3 RP session and they were actually pretty good... Neatly organised and they were 2 to 3 hour long sessions and they would pick up where they left the next day

That sounds more like adventure RPG more than anything.
This is actually awful. You're forcefully constrained into these awful honor rules that are ridiculously dysfunctional and only lead to more chaos being caused in the server. And don't even get me started on the shitty mods.
You could probably make a decent or at least okay Arma 3 RP server by having it, you know, revolve around a combat or an insurgency zone, which would justify plenty of situations the players bring themselves in.
But now it's just glorified, hardcore cops and robbers and nobody wants to admit it. Hell, some people [I]pay for it.[/I]

I don't get TS roleplay servers.

Edit: I get it in things like GMOD but I just really don't get it here.
