half life 2 has aged wonderfully I still enjoy entire playthroughs
Valve game's designs are always better during beta. (Aylx/Zoey being the best examples)

I understand it was an alpha/beta, whatever you think it is. It was really cool to go through the leaked files and see what was different. Some of the original sounds and maps were pretty cool. Speak of which, the original storyline was awesome. Wow I can't wait for it to be released.

You know, I think I'd rather see what HL2 was going to be instead of HL3... Honestly, I think I'd put Valve on the very top of the dev food chain if they were to release HL2's "old" cut story. Even though some parts didn't make sense, if they worked on it, I think it would make an amazing game, judging from what I've seen in the leak files and from that map. I know it wont happen, but, its good to dream... [editline]5th December 2011[/editline] Also, is it just me or models on the current Source engine seem too... right? Too blocky? The models for things I see in that traptown video seem to have more detail, like the boxes, having crammed up sides and the barrels being damaged. Seems like the current engine has everything with less detail then before.
I remember I got banned for a month here for talking about the beta back when it was illegal to own. :v:
This just reminded me of how old I'm already am, and that I won't ever expirience anything like Half Life 2 again. It was a game that sucked me in like no other game ever again did. Especially with garry's mod, I knew the source engine just as well as my left pocket.
The beta is what got me into HL2, and I actually didn't know the beta and the retail were going to be so different, or even that 1 was leaked. I remember searching through the tunnels looking for the hydra that kills the combine before finding all that out. Was kinda disappointing but either way it was an amazing game.
badasss game

Oh god I remember being SO excited about Half-life 2.. All those videos.. Valve can go fuck themselves for all I care if they don't plan on making Half-life 3 :(
I still remember the first time i launched HL2, my friend came over just to see how it looked and we were stunned by the visuals, animations, sounds and all that, my jaw was on the floor for like 15 minutes, those were the times. Sadly, games these days just don't have that feeling anymore.

I wish I gave a toss about PC gaming back then so I could've been orgasming with the rest of you, only started playing them in 2007ish when I got the orange box for christmas.
You never experienced the mod that was gmod 9.0.4b? Heretic.
I started with a gmod 9 of some description, does that not count?
As cool as the environment in Half-Life 2 is now, it seemed so much more complete in the descriptions you read of the beta. I mean, people had to wear gas masks because of the toxic stuff the Combine were pumping into the Combine were pumping into the atmosphere. The AirExchange looked like an awesome chapter. The walk through City 17 was originally supposed to take a lot longer. You got to see factories where children were working, other factories. Even the concept art looks amazing. http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Half-Life_2_original_storyline Here's a great link showing the original storyline. Maybe they'll reuse some of this stuff for Half-Life 3. Gabe DID say he wanted to return to the "dark" atmosphere.
I've always been a huge fan of the leak/old storyline/raising the bar concepts. I was a very active member of the leak community back in its hay-day. It's all but gone now. MI is the only semi-active actual team working on a leak mod that I know of. There are a few others on moddb but they haven't been active in months/years.

I wonder if the leak is still out there. I wish I could go back, find all the fixes to get the game running, then go through everything again. Too bad noone works on the leak anymore.

Dreams really do come true! :v:

I might try to find the leak again, that'll give me something to mess with.

You struggle to find similar interactivity or emotional expression in many modern games. Fingers crossed, let's hope HL3 will be groundbreaking in a similar way
Ohh the good old days when it was all about HL2 in 2004-2005 and how groundbreaking it looked and was gonna be. I was only 15 when i bought the game in early 2005 but i was psyched as fuck and playing through it was the best single player experience i ever had of all the time i waited for it <3 truly groundbreaking and every way for it's time. Facepunch was literally BUZZING with HL2 only content and ofc gmod
I declare Half Life 2 as game of a decade.
I have much more videos on my Youtube channel of HL2 leak maps
