The connection between students and industry has always been horrendous, not only for gaming. It's nice to see someone is taking an initiative to improve that somewhat. Hopefully something good will come from this, but now I'm skeptical
I'm kinda afraid that this will try and paint the industry as "super cool and awesome and there are giant buffet tables full of sugary treats!" because the gaming industry is an incredibly shitty place to work at, what with incredibly long hours, shitty job security and little recognition for what you do

No you really do have a valid point. I feel like it should be professionals teaching kids about getting into the industry, not kids teaching kids. What experience do these kids have with the industry?
