The plants sitting right beneath the panels? Because otherwise, holy fuck...
What he is saying is he doesn't want HIS neighborhood littered with additional tall structures that create noise and mess up the landscape. The alternative isn't a big dirty factory next to his house, but rather continued use of the big dirty factory 100 miles away that nobody minds because it has been there for decades. This is a legit concern for a lot of people, we can't just write it off to selfishness.
"You can't write off petty selfish people as selfish." Sure, okay.
If you're not a car guy you won't get it. In all seriousness.
I'm a car guy, and I like the idea of a quiet electric car. You'd still be able to drive your big dirty v8s just like you can drive old bombs on the road today despite them being a death trap. And in theory you could simulate V8 sound using outside speakers, possibly in the empty engine bay of EVs. You could simulate gears and clutch biting in EVs too. I'd be pointless but fun, you could make your car sound however you like and be as powerful as you like.

They rejected it because the plan was to install it off city limits and have the city pay for it without getting any of the benefits or a return on their investment
This is why I'm optimistic for the future, at least in regards to global warming. When we talk about people with power, the 1%, we're talking about extremely greedy people. And these people are beginning to see the writing on the wall, and it says "Oil and gas and stuff won't be economically viable in 20 or so years." And what do greedy people want? They want even more power and more money. So if these people want to get more power and more money, they're gonna have to ditch the technologies that are destroying the planet. Not because it ensures a brighter future for their children's children's children or anything because they don't give a shit about that. They're gonna ditch these technologies simply because it's gonna stop making them money. [editline]27th November 2017[/editline]
How about the Windmills fucking up the landscape of the countryside or Oceans full of them and its too loud for animals?
The video points out explicitly that no matter what we do, we're going to have an environmental impact. This is simply unavoidable. However, the impacts of these clean technologies are still substantially lower than the impact of oil, coal, etc. [editline]27th November 2017[/editline]
All politics and whatnot aside, it's gonna suck when oil burners are gone. You just can't recreate that sound and feel of a old school V8
I know what you mean, to be honest. Muscle cars and sports cars, engineering marvels of internal combustion, are truly remarkable. Just like how the behemoth steam locomotives of yesteryear are beautiful pieces of engineering and are simply awesome. However, these are acceptable losses. Steam engines were fucking amazing, terrifying beasts that ruled the American railways. The power that these titans could generate and the speeds they could clip at are almost unimaginable. The precision it required to operate and maintain these things is staggering. The impact they had on history is immeasurable. Their legacy permeates international culture, as an example Steam and its logo are directly inspired by these magnificent metal monsters. But progress marches on, and what is seen as an engineering marvel today will be a quaint curiosity of tomorrow. These astonishing sports cars truly are amazing and beautiful. But they are best remembered as feats of engineering made by the ones that came before us than as something that must be kept alive. After all, ENIAC was a major breakthrough, but there's no reason to use one today past preserving the history. I won't miss using an ENIAC any more than I would miss using a Ferrari. These things will be missed, and I'm with you there. But it's simply worth it. This is a legit concern for a lot of people, we can't just write it off to selfishness. Converting from coal/oil/nuclear to wind power means big construction projects happening in places that has typically been left untouched by industry/urbanization because of their remoteness. This wouldn't be a problem if you could just knock down existing powerplants and build wind turbines on the existing land. Sadly we can't; we literally HAVE to mess up open oceans and landscapes due to the very nature of the energy we're attempting to harness. Wind is a good option for some locations. For everything else, let's go nuclear.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIMBY Yeah, the snobbish residents are blocking renewable energy because it's ugly for them. They'll totally agree to a nuclear plant being built near them instead.
