i'd say it's because 'am a furry' is shorter than 'have a fetish for anthropomorphic animals'. hell, there are a few that don't even know the word 'anthropomorphic'.

That's where there's the break in communication. There are really two lines of thought.
There's the one line of thought where, if you're even interested in things like looney toons, You're a furry, it's just the Creepy furs/"furverts"/whatever that are the creeps in suits, the creeps drawing porn of anything disney or pixar lays a finger on, etc.
And then there's the second line of thought, my own way of thinking, where only the creeps in suits/drawing porn are actual furries. the rest of them are just people who like cartoons.
Misunderstandings between the two can make a conversation... messy. To say the least.
