Honestly, Source 1 is at it's limits, and has been for awhile. Source 2 is just... Eh.... It doesn't really provide anything new, and I highly doubt Valve is gonna make a new stunning splash into the gaming world again. As for mapping, well... Valve needs to seriously update the Hammer tools, and make them not a pile of a shit at the moment.

I mean... there's just Dota 2 and basically nothing else at this point, right?

Large maps, performs well, deals with many NPC's, amazing physics, great graphics, everything. now every engine is the master of all trades with the right tinkering. Every engine can do those things 'the best', there's no limit, its just based on what you prefer. Source as it stands is dead in the water in modern standards. All engines are a jack of trades and even a master of them, Source can no longer dominate that slot, even if they did make it as good as the current engines. [editline]15th January 2018[/editline] The only thing I can see them 'mastering' would perhaps going for being the best engine for physics and expanding facial animation tech really.
The Dell product placement in this video is way too obnoxious

This is clearely a video made for source/valve game modders. I dont get what's the point of saying "source is outdated", yeah ofc it is, he even showed how in the video and never claimed otherwise. Whats the point of arguing something that obvious when all he did was sharing hammer tips.

Isn't this like super old as well? Even comparing to the original for a rough idea, I'd say it isn't very fair considering how many ears it has been since this was first shown.

I remember when this looked mind blowing back when it was released, but now pretty much any of the new engines can achieve this.
That was the only other "screenshot" of Source 2 I knew of and yeah, that shit's OLD now. Who knows if there's any real updates or progress with Source 2 anymore. Maybe Valve's VR experience / The Lab is in Source 2?
I remember when this looked mind blowing back when it was released, but now pretty much any of the new engines can achieve this.
Tbh I'd say it still holds up well. If they update it from there then they should be set. Maybe it is 'the norm' now, but it definitely looks great
I remember when this looked mind blowing back when it was released, but now pretty much any of the new engines can achieve this.
Even then, pretty much any new engine could achieve that.
Nothing in this video was impressive lol Also Valve have pushed all their games to a really matte/flat look for the last few years because it ages well. CS:GO is stylised by all accounts now.
I know Valve textures well, and you can see how much Valve dropped the ball in L4D2 and CSGO. They used to make smart use of cubemaps and phong to get realistic-looking objects and walls, but now everything is flat because apparently only glass can have reflections, right? INFRA is proof that you can still make Source look fantastic if you use textures right.

They've been using Source 2 in the SteamVR home thing and the photogrammetry tool tho.
Isn't Source 2 made to run on toasters but still managing to look good?
Isn't Source 2 made to run on toasters but still managing to look good?
Yeah Source 2 has Vulkan support so it will run well on toasters and potatos. Plus their custom Panorama UI framework is probably well optimized too. edit: Steam Big Picture uses Panorama, the desktop version still uses VGUI 2 like Source games tho.
Isn't Source 2 made to run on toasters but still managing to look good?
AFAIK, it's just Source with a physics and visual update running on the Vulkan API
AFAIK, it's just Source with a physics and visual update running on the Vulkan API
Yeah they're making their own physics engine called Rubikon, tho I don't think we've heard from it since it was first presented so it may be cancelled in favor of Havok or something.
The Dell product placement in this video is way too obnoxious
I'd rather sit through that than have content creaters make peanuts from YouTube's demonetization bullshit.
Has anyone really seen what Source 2 can do yet, though? I mean... there's just Dota 2 and basically nothing else at this point, right?
It also powers SteamVR Home.
edit: Steam Big Picture uses Panorama, the desktop version still uses VGUI 2 like Source games tho.
The Big Picture runs so poorly on my Linux machine, it hurts. On the other hand, my Linux machine can't run HL1 at 1080p and hold 60 fps, so, yeah, makes sense, I guess
AFAIK, it's just Source with a physics and visual update running on the Vulkan API
It's got a great set of mapping tools as well. They do away with BSP volumes so now everything is made of meshes. So far the strongest feature Source 2's Hammer editor has is the ability to modify meshes in-editor and save them as completely new meshes. This helps massively in map iteration, and is a feature I've barely ever seen natively supported in modern engines, with the exception of Lumberyard.
Anybody got any cool Source 2 videos? There was a period around, I think 2 years ago, when people experimented with Source 2 quite a lot, there was some cool physics related stuff, shading related stuff
Source can do real-time reflections just fine, but nobody ever uses it in their maps and I don't know why. [t]https://i.imgur.com/YBrJ7vj.jpg[/t]

I wish source had less limits and played to its strengths better. I'd be willing to accept dated graphics if it meant we could get more interactive physics based environments and elaborate ai.
One excellent things about Source is the game feel and the atmosphere, even though it can be replicated in other engines apparently. GoldSRC has a great tanky feeling as well.
Source can do real-time reflections just fine, but nobody ever uses it in their maps and I don't know why. [t]https://i.imgur.com/YBrJ7vj.jpg[/t]
Because it is slow, it redraws the whole scene which is really bad and it also has a lot of visual problems.

I've used it since they made their controller and while it has its issues its pretty solid. Now if only it didn't use so much processing power.
