I don't have any social problems or anything equivalent, yet I like MLP...?
I don't have any social problems or anything equivalent, yet I like MLP...?
I'm talking about the people who go out of their way to decorate their entire room in MLP stuff while spending money to go to Bronycon and all that. Not the more reserved people who just enjoy the show. This kind of obsession is a result of those social problems. People with normal enjoyment of the show just like the show.
The problem is people seem to think that bronies chose to be bronies.
Are you seriously suggesting there's some sort of brony gene, that you're born a brony? How could choosing something you like not be a choice? It's one thing to like something, but investing a lot of time and effort into it is different. This guy isn't just some casual fan of the show, it looks like he worships it. I don't know why you're spending so much time defending someone you don't even know. What he's done to that room is absurd and weird, end of story.
The problem is people seem to think that bronies chose to be bronies. These are people who were already anti-social, what many people tend to call "autistic" whether they really have autism or not. These are people that have already been through life being ridiculed, not fitting in, or generally not being happy. So they see MLP, something that reminds them of the great days of being a kid where no one judges anyone and everyone was happy, and they take solace in it. Sure, it's a false reality, but did they choose to be attracted to that fantasy ideology? These are people that have never felt truly accepted by the world around them, and now they do. What would you prefer they do to combat their mental issues? Seek a therapist or counselor? Most people don't have the money nor time to afford that, since therapists can costs hundreds of thousands of dollars before any real progress is made. Yes, they're obsessing, and that's bad, but they don't have a choice. Their mental state forces them to like what they like. Let them be happy, it's not hurting you, and it's their choice to live life the way they want. If you think people should be allowed to smoke, drink, take drugs, all things that can evolve into very dangerous obsessions, I think we should let some guy buy the products he enjoys with the money he made. Stop judging people and let them do what they do. Look at how you live your life before you start insulting the way other people live theirs.
its like every time you post, you're just constantly speaking out of your ass. If the said person in the video was under the age of 18 he would have the option to seek a government-subsidized provider to see if there is a state-funded mental health system (differentiates from state to state). Not too mention there are also possible discount programs out there. If he in school, he could talk to a counselor (but legit professional help is probably better). Typical rate for psychiatric help? It can easily range from 110-whatever the hell it would cost (hourly). Saying it would cost "Hundreds of thousands of dollars before any real progress is made" is absolutely silly, and dumb. Your entire point is somewhere I can't find, I don't even KNOW what you're trying to argue about from here on out. You're acting as if you know what their exact mental state.
I don't have any social problems or anything equivalent, yet I like MLP...?
It's okay to like something and watch it, I mean I enjoy watching Regular show, adventure time, aqua teen hunger force etc. shows designed for teenagers and the like to watch. Just that MLP wasn't intended to be enjoyed by a mature audience over the age of.. 10? The show's demographic is preschoolers almost not grown adult men or teenagers. I don't get freaked out often but MLP just doesn't seem right to preach it. I mean, go ahead, like and watch it, nobody gives a fuck, fucks will be given if you go around telling people you watch it, that's when people will start to get pissed.
I don't think you choose to like something. If you watch a TV show, you don't say to yourself "I'm not sure whether to feel positive or negative to the context of this visual escapism I am currently witnessing." Rather, the only choice you make it what you wish to do about liking something. Do you keep it to yourself, or do you plaster the walls with merchandise? These are decisions influenced only by yourself and the traits you were given when you were born. Whether or not you like something in the first place is not a decision that most people will actively ponder, it's practically instinctual.

The actions of their parents, family, friends, all of these are what make us who we are. We like things because of how we were raised, as a result of the world around us. We never "choose" to like the things we like. I did not "choose" to like, for instance, Lord of the Rings. I was merely introduced very early into fantasy games. When the movies came out, I enjoyed them, purely because of my past and growing up. Can you genuinely say that you like MLP, and then enjoy it? No, because the actual mental action of "liking" something is out of your control. Such as liking any food. You can eat a food and say "bleh that's nasty" but that doesn't mean you chose to find that food nasty. Also, why are you spending time insulting someone? Why do you feel the need to call a person weird? I guarantee you like something that isn't normal. What do you think a therapist or counselor is going to say to "fix" him? Most therapists tell you to find a hobby to pursue to be happy. What exactly would the counselor do to fix this "obsession"? You have to understand that this guy will not do this of his own free will if he finds himself happy. Not only that, why should he change his lifestyle to fit your way of living life. You say I'm acting as if I know their exact mental state, yet you purely assume he's going to have a destructive life purely based on the actions of Youtube videos.
I can feel this will explode at any minute

You've been pretty much border-line arguing that its nearly genetics(you've been implied this, many many times...), and not once did I mention he should change his lifestyle to fit *my* way of living. Its as if you're copypasta'ing every argument in the book in spite of trying to make yourself look good. I'm the type of person who tries to stay away from these kinds of arguments, but for some reason your posts just caught my eye. Its not because they're bad arguments that you're posting, its more like you aren't reading ANYTHING, that ANYBODY is saying. You disregard half the posts, and rearrange your first argument and repost it.

Not one example. If it's so obvious, you'd think it would be easy for you to post something, but obviously not. Also, I've already established it's not genetics, rather, the environment someone grows up and lives in throughout their life.
hahaha you're so thick- its the level of obsession. if you think being overly obsessed with something isn't unhealthy then you need help.
You have played a thousand hours of CSS. Why don't you take your own advice, bub?
Wow. Y'know, I've always considered myself a pretty big anime fan; I've been watching it for probably 7 years if not more and I still do regularly. But I've never even CONSIDERED filling my entire fucking room with obnoxious anime shite that would alienate anybody who enters that room. You have to be literally obsessed to do this kind of shit. The kid needs help.
I can feel this will explode at any minute
nah there are a few debates going around right now but most of fp in general has come to terms with the fact that bronies exist and whining won't solve anything.
You have played a thousand hours of CSS. Why don't you take your own advice, bub?
because thats my account :rolleye:
You have played a thousand hours of CSS. Why don't you take your own advice, bub?
But it's not an obsession because it's normal for guys to like video games! It's only an obsession if it's something Laferio doesn't consider normal.
But it's not an obsession because it's normal for guys to like video games! It's only an obsession if it's something Laferio doesn't consider normal.
So what are you even trying to argue now? Are you just throwing shit because you've got nothing left? :v:
hey guys funny video in OP check it out
I'm pretty sure that the general consensus is that being obsessed with anything is bad.
This guy has yet to show any signs of destructive behaviour, why do we assume it's a bad obsession rather than a heavy interest? Even if we do, somehow, assume it's a destructive obsession, what could he do at this point in time to prevent his already formed obsession? [editline]11th August 2012[/editline]
So what are you even trying to argue now? [editline]11th August 2012[/editline] Also, to the argument on therapy, $100 dollars an hour is a shit ton of money.
only on the internet will you find debates such as these do people really have the urge to go and argue over a show lmao
-snip can't be fucked with this anymore-
stop playing devil's advocate
I don't understand. How am I devil's advocate if I personally believe this guy isn't a bad person and I believe that if he's happy, more power to him?
At first I was going to comment on the guy's extreme lack of subtlety, but when he showed his G3 collection, I thought of three words: God. Fucking. Dammit. And I don't remember where I read this, but liking G3 in this day and age is more socially unacceptable than liking G4. Edit: I have autism too, but it isn't as bad as this guy.
I subtitled it. But not normal subtitles. As much as I feel bad for it, twas' worth it. Deleted it because it was just plain mean sorry guys

Here's an example of a decent brony instead of the ones Facepunch loves to talk about.
