I played it for like 5 minutes a couple of years ago, all i remembered is that you had some dwarves, and everything was unrecognizable, they could do stuff like resource collection, but that was about it. I got tired after trying to figure out how to do anything whatsoever
Did you know that you have the attention span of a toddler
I expect a game that has been in development for 15 years to at least had some playability testing. The visual design must have been made by a monkey. A game can have fantastic simulation and world gen. But severly lacking visuals can drag down how impressive it is.
my friend told me to read this book about wizards and shit but i opened it up and there were no pictures, it was just words.
0/10 graphics would not read
If you're not hardcore enough (like me) there is always Gnomoria, which is a lot easier to learn and is pretty good.
It doesn't have the near bottomless depth of DF though.

You should really learn to read a post before replying to it.
Guys
Play DF, please we could really use the activity over in the DF thread

um did you read his post? the visuals of the game are very much intentional. if you don't like it, w/e, but don't act like it's laziness or incompetence because dwarf fortress looks exactly like it's supposed to.
imo the fact the controls are terrible and that it only uses ascii only makes it more fun to play
i felt accomplished every time I learned how to do something
Personally the controls aren't that bad when you get used to it. I'm not really sure in what way you could improve them.
Suppose select with LMB and a drop down menu with RMB, but other than that, I don't know.
I want to get into dorf fortress from all the fun stories I've heard it's just learning everything seems so daunting
Here's the (outdated) video I used to start playing. This guy'll show you the basics on how to get an actual fort set up and running, and you can wiggle your way out from there.

PS it's longer than Django Unchained
Dwarf Fortress is great for playing on old PCs.
But you need like an overclocked i7 to play it on large fortresses.
I'm horrid at Dorf Fortress, mainly because of the military stuff and managing stockpiles and the various stations Dorfs use for creating/cooking and stuff
Building on what I said: this book is absolutely worth the cost. It taught me much more than wikis or videos ever did.

The only thing that makes me angry about the interface is how hard it is to get symmetry in your fort.
I can't tell you how many times my fortress has been 1 block off from being symmetrical.

It is out of date, and the wiki does have more information, but it actually teaches you instead of throwing all of the info in your face.

much like reading a book on a subject vs reading the wikipedia page
I once downloaded it and played it for a bit, but i quit because i couldn't figure out how to do anything and the wiki was no help
it may have infinite depth, but it has too many obstacles to get to that depth for me
The ascii graphics were fine, by the way
I'm a big fan of roguelikes and ASCII games and I've been playing Cataclysm DDA for months, but I just haven't caught on to DF yet. I'll get there eventually. Definitely has a very daunting skill barrier, and hell, a daunting usability barrier too.
I tried fortress mode a few times, but I always tend to try it in a place where I have no internet. Adventure mode is easy to get the basics of although.

The e-book is regularly updated, I thought.
Huh, yeah, if he updates the e-book with each version I totally might consider buying it. The only reason I hadn't yet is because I assumed it was going to get increasingly outdated with each update to the game.
It would be good to check before buying it. I believe that was the author's incentive for selling an e-book along with the physical copy, but I could be wrong.
Honestly I just learned to play the game by looking everything up on the wiki, took a few attempts but eventually I got into it.
I really don't like DF with tilesets, to me ASCII looks so much cleaner and appropriate. The problem with tilesets is that the more intricate graphics don't look so great without animations or transparency. They just appear as really visually-busy static images sliding around a grid.
The nature and simplicity of ASCII is such that everything naturally compliments everything else, and it's a lot less visually cluttered, so it's easy to take in a wider degree of information.
Not knocking anyone who does use tilesets though, it seems apparent that most people have an easier time with them than otherwise.

It is? Last I heard it still had some outdated info regarding some newer features, but that was a while ago, an update might have been pushed out for it between now and then.

Well actually he has a more recent tutorial series.
I think it'd be a big improvement if you could control things with your mouse
It's daunting, but the keyboard controls end up being faster once you grit through them.
As for the graphics? Pff. It becomes like reading a book. You don't yell at books for bad graphics now do 'ye?

Haha I know. I just like linking to that one because it's about as long as The Godfather and it's called "the basics"

Love the loyal fanbase this game has. Coming back and reading comments upon comments completely annihilating anyone who spouts ignorant opinions is great :v:
The most glorious game of them all. The countless game mechanics mingle together in horrific ways and create the most ridiculous of experiences.
this game is bad.
