So just an obsession with "vroom vroom metal box go fast" and egocentricism, then?
Where do you get this egocentric idea from?
Throwin' in some more high-speed runs

R34 going all out.

I'm guessing he thinks we're all Ken Block clones who drive around doing donuts and powerslides all over the city, whenever we get in our cars, hah.
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
Also, I can't quite find it now, but there was a French (or German, can't remember) documentary about high-speed runners on the Autobahn using the RS6 Avant for drug trafficking across Germany and France.
Those wagons are fuckin' land missiles, it's ridiculous.

^ Here's one outrunning a ZX-10, doing well over 300 km/h (200 MPH) on the Autobahn.
let's not forget the manga "Wangan Midnight" was heavily inspired by the club.
Where do you get this egocentric idea from?
"Hey, we know random people may die from what we do, but it's fun so who gives a shit? Also we promise to stop as soon as we've killed someone, so that makes it ok :)"
Gee, what could possibly make someone think these people only cared about themselves?

Yep, totally, you've got me 100% figured out. Try actually reading my posts

Of course I do. You mad?

Posting my thoughts about the video and the following discussion? It should be noted that I'm actually interested by cars and racing myself - as long as it's done under controlled circumstances

nice meme btw
All right, the "gaspedal" part of my comment was stupid and pointless.
I'm just tired of seeing irresponsible people being glorified, "look at this guy increasing the risk of killing someone innocent tenfold, so cool and crazy!!!"
It encourages people like him to continue doing what they do, and it inspires other people to do the same
I'm worried about other trafficants doing dumb shit when I'm driving as it is
I read all your posts in this thread before deciding my response, and:
I don't believe anyone is condoning his behavior, but it's unrealistic to expect people to sit back and not enjoy something that is inherently cool. Yes, we all understand, it's careless, dangerous, and selfish, but no one is directly glorifying it - just appreciating a skillset and human feat that is both challenging and impressive.
All of us get it dude, he's a dick for putting lives at risk, but he knows what he's doing and from an engineering standpoint there's a certain beauty to it.
but he knows what he's doing and from an engineering standpoint there's a certain beauty to it.
From an engineering standpoint guns have beauty to them as well, that doesn't make it right or "cool" to fire them into targets with random people in between
From an engineering standpoint guns have beauty to them as well, that doesn't make it right or "cool" to fire them into targets with random people in between
That's a pretty broad comparison to make. I don't really think debating this with you is going to end well for anyone involved, so I'll be on my way after this. The bottom line is that people do stupid shit that could have negative consequences but on the occasions it doesn't, it's fun to watch, and there's nothing wrong with being a viewer enjoying some entertainment where people genuinely didn't get hurt.
The only thing I see here are sarcastic shitposts being made, some points yeah, but mostly shitposting. You're really up in arms about footage from the 90's, it's happened already. You can't change it by saying "no i don't like said thing it's dangerous" because we all know it's dangerous. That's why they do it. Not to murder, but to experience life as how they wanna live it. By living on the edge of death, that's what the ultimate feeling is to them.
Maybe testosterone yeah but also the fact you feel one with what you do. You're running at a pace no one will feel except for those brave and stupid enough.
Honestly,
So just an obsession with "vroom vroom metal box go fast" and egocentricism, then?
Very childish to say that, you don't like cars we get it.
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
To point out again: I will never condone such driving and would advise no one to do it, but it's cool to look at.
That's a pretty broad comparison to make. I don't really think debating this with you is going to end well for anyone involved, so I'll be on my way after this. So let's say you have six targets, with random people filling the spaces between them. You also have a relatively skilled marksman, and the chance of him accidentally hitting one of the random people instead of the target, either seriously crippling or killing them, is relatively small. He's armed with a wonderfully designed automatic rifle, and he continues with this practice for several years, until he accidentally shoots one of the people, causing them to die.
Is this cool or sociopathic?
Justify your answer.
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
you don't like cars we get it.
Except I do
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
That's why they do it. Not to murder, but to experience life as how they wanna live it.
If you're so keen on living on the "brink fo death" then do it somewhere you only risk your own life rather than the lives of people who want nothing to do with that kind of stuff ffs, and at best, none of my tax money
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
Except I do
Then explain ' "vroom vroom metal box go fast" ' because that sounded kind of sketch. And you're missing the point in this. It's like you shot the people, you're missing the point here. The point we're trying to make is that we enjoy seeing it, because nothing bad happens in it. It has happened, but guns have also been in cool situations that seem very threatening and "sociopathic" to others. We enjoy them because NOTHING happened for god sake.
Do you understand why we're arguing with you? We're saying nothing happened in the video. Bad things happen all the time, yet nothing here so I want to sit back and enjoy the fucking video without it getting shit on. That's all.
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
Then do it somewhere where you only risk ending your own life ffs, and at best, none of my tax money
We do, it's called a track day. But on a track day I don't see me running at high speeds adrenaline rushing. We do it because when we get to a relative save area, we go WOT, and after that it's over. Those 5-20 seconds of rush. After that, it's over. We go back to 130 kp/h or 80 mph and we're done.
[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
Again, did you read the massive "I DON'T CONDONE THIS" or are you just ignoring it to make a point everyone already got? Because we get it. We get iiit. It's bad, no one should do it, but it happens. Just like people go hunting for fun or whatever the fuck. There's a risk, there's a reward. I again, don't condone it.
Also the drivers who are most dangerous are the ones who think they just need to hold the gaspedal down
People are addicted to speed, the people who dis this back then were usually rich as fuck or had their own tuning houses. There aren't a lot of places to do sustained runs of 200mph, so thry turn to the long stretches of public road to do their runs.
The scene in okinawa

[editline]19th March 2016[/editline]
You going "omg this is very dangerous pls stop" is reaching out to nobody, we all know its dangerous and stupid, and the people who did this probably got the same lectures, but what a surprise, they kept doing it anyway
The JDM culture is so cool and fascinating and is definitely my favorite branch of automotive history.
Great thread, thanks to rampage and roby esp. for all the great info and history.
No one does top speed runs around here in Argentina, the *only* thing I could find so far is this E60 M5 going 200+ on some deserted highway in the early morning.

Dat sweet S85 V10 sounds glorious.
Some more 0-300 km/h (0-187 MPH) Japanese goodness

People need to remember that there was a time when VeilSide made some of the fastest cars on the road, they were pretty successful at dragracing too iirc
Not wanting innocent people to die = boring now?
Being overly argumentative = boring. How about you let people enjoy their entertainment
So he managed to hold a gaspedal down? Impressive. By pulling shit like this on a public road with other traffic all you've managed to prove is that you're a dickhead
Did you even watch the video? Look at 2:49 - 3:00. Do you see how hard he's fighting that steering wheel?
We got videos of motherfucking Japan and its awesome roads, landscapes, culture and cars, and we're on a discussion about werther its fine to find it cool or not because its dangerous.
For fuck sakes people, don't be the "I only use a car as a tool to go from A to B." kind of person who prefers to contemplate about the layer of ozone instead of going for a midnight ride after catching your wife with Barry from the office.
The 25 year import rule is a god damn shame
The R34 is such a beautiful vehicle
Wouldn't this be legal to do on a German autobahn with no speed limit?
Yeah but not every part of the autobahn is unlimited
So he managed to hold a gaspedal down? Impressive. By pulling shit like this on a public road with other traffic all you've managed to prove is that you're a dickhead
Have you legit driven a car on high speeds before?
You have no idea how hard it can be to control a car of that power on a wet road.
Which is exactly why it is so unbelievably stupid. They want to do this on a track? Great! Have fun, and be safe! Doing this on open public roads is exceedingly dangerous, however, and not just to the driver of the vehicle. People who participate in this kind of idiocy are gambling with the lives of strangers just for an adrenaline rush, which is absolutely contemptible.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying your vehicle, but it is NOT a toy. It's size, weight, and speed makes it a weapon, and it should be respected as such. Have you any idea how many people are killed each year by reckless drivers? I watched my own damn neighbor die in my driveway after being hit and thrown by somebody speeding through our neighborhood. It's not fucking cool, it's not just a bit of harmless fun. If you want to drive like a racer driver, go to a private track. Don't gamble with other peoples' lives for an adrenaline rush.
I don't see why we need yet another one of these discussions. It's not like we don't know it's dangerous. It's extremely dangerous, and I doubt any of us here would consider doing it like that.
It's happened, the video and the content in it has already happened. Get over it, just be happy nothing happened in it. I'm very very sorry to hear about the loss honestly. But again, nothing happened in it and bad things happen all the time. It's really unfortunate you've had to witness it.
Again, it's not like we can stop the people from doing it. They all have the need for this kind of stuff, and will continue to do so.

This is a super agreeable point but as stated before, what's done is done. And it's pretty cool in my opinion.
And that being said, someone is gonna do it. Always. But i'm glad it was someone like Smokey. And if someone else does this stuff they probably will not have a car that can even reach 197mph.
Smokey has been driving like this since he was 14; he's an insanely talented mechanic and engineer and driver.
Here's Smokey and another Supra from that in the video ( aftermarket front end )
There's a V12 in there. The Supra in the video had a turbo RB26 peaking at 1000hp with 33psi of boost.

There is no amount of talent or skill to justify reckless driving on public roads. Yes, its done and obviously lambasting this dude over something that happened seventeen years ago isn't going to change that, but there are a ton of people that still do this shit and that is not okay. Hell, we even had a Facepuncher get arrested for illegal road racing after one of his friends was killed.
The idea that anybody can be too good of a driver to ever get in an accident is stupid as fuck. All it takes is another car showing up where or when you don't expect it, and you have just killed yourself and somebody else (or several somebodies). It couldn't be more stupid and dangerous if you were randomly firing a gun out the window.
I don't care if you think I'm a buzzkill. There is nothing cool about pulling this shit on open public roads. Keep it on tracks.
