Maybe I should pick it up again, it’s been a while.
Had a really good kung-fu mutant build that I hope is still viable.
I once utilised a “personal massager” while automatically fighting off a horde of zombies with melee counterattacks for the duration of the session.
Honestly the biggest problem with Cataclysm: DDA is that it's development in recent years has been focused almost entirely on the early game. In particular, adding more and more menial fucking chores you have to do to get past it and nerfing strategies to skip past them. What this means is that the game actually becomes dramatically less enjoyable once you get past the stage where you're scrounging to survive because there's been barely any effort put into the late stages of the game. Furthermore, the game is getting harder and harder to get into because you have to learn to do more dull, mind-numbing bullshit to be able to sustain yourself, and a lot of intuitive strategies have been nerfed for being "game-y and unrealistic"

Oh, see the post above mine I guess
Honestly I feel like A LOT of survival games, not just CDDA, have an insane focus on the early game.
Seems like it's not all doom and gloom with the current dev. They are acknowledging that the realism approach isn't liked by everyone and seems like they've reversed some of the dumb nerfs on weapons:

I'm genuinely excited to get back in the game.

If you're thinking about starting to play, you should consider getting the third party autolauncher:

Autoupdates the game and you can manage saves, essentially adding a "conventional" save system.
I love this game. I'll never forget almost dying because I cut myself on a broken window frame while looting houses and got tetanus and started having muscle spasms

Or breaking a leg and doing heroin in an abandoned boarded up house to get myself materials to make a splint

That's why you smash windows a second time to remove debris. The game has a ton of little neat details like that.
You can also use the construction menu to clean the glass out of windows if you want a more silent approach but then again if you're busting windows you clearly don't care much about being silent.
I usually just use a crowbar.
Improvised lockpicks work fine too.
