Anyone who still hasn't familiarized themselves with 4chan is honestly missing out. I thought this meme of "4chan is bad and full of creeps" died out in 2010 but I guess not.
Anonymity is one of the greatest virtues a community could have. It brings out the best, and worst, in people. Sometimes you stumble upon threads upon threads of nothing but shitposting and smug anime characters, other times you have threads debating the earlier works of Mozart and Salieri in so much detail it'd put scholars to shame. It's great, and it's this extreme that sets it apart from other communities.
Reddit can't really compete, let alone any other online communities, because they are too concerned with their target audiences, "rating" systems, and user systems which allow people to cultivate an account for years, thus - indirectly - severely limiting free speech and the amount of potential content from a given user. Not to mention all manner of echo-chambers and hugboxes being manifested and enforced by moderators curbing and driving away any real discussion or debate. All communities suffer from these problems, even Facepunch , but not 4chan. And it's why I've been using it for a decade now. The community just never stagnates, never runs itself thin. Always something to be shocked at, intrigued by, laughed at.
I couldn't have put it better myself.

sounds like you just like the hug box within 4chan. unless you're joking.
sounds like you just like the hug box within 4chan. unless you're joking.
There's diverging opinions on 4chan on pretty much everything. It's just that the people who go into a thread about something they don't like just make a post about how they don't like it and everyone moves on.
And if you want to see people arguing just go on /o/ for the daily Corvette VS GTR thread.
sounds like you just like the hug box within 4chan. unless you're joking.
4chan is the last site that would have a hugbox

How does an anonymous site have a hug box?

That's echo box, not hug box.
say you agree with anita sarkesian on /v/
I mean, well, is it a hugbox or is it people being in agreement on something?
Most people outside of her very specific audience dont like her. Most people here dont like her, are we a hugbox? Do you know what the word hugbox means?
mention you enjoyed life is strange on /v/
I literally saw a Life is Strange waifu thread the other day on /v/.

No not really.
Unless you say something exceptionally stupid you're not going to get "buried", and you'd have to break the rules to get banned.
Also, what narratives. Nobodies enforcing narratives, everyones anonymous. I dont think you're using these words correctly.
[editline]11th March 2017[/editline]
Actually, im going test the validity of the Anita Sarkeesian statement, just to see what happens.

How about you back those opinions of yours up with facts. But don't bitch when they actually argue about it with you.
There's a difference between being in a hug-box and being forced to debate your beliefs against a crowd who have had this discussion a thousand times before and made a decision. You will never get banned for speaking your opinion on 4chan, you will however have to explain why. There's no internet funbucks that automatically validate your views, no post count or username unless you use a trip like a tool. There's no ratings, you either debate it and win or debate it and lose.
If what you said was true, there would never be anywhere that WASN'T A hug/echo box.
Also the amount of butthurt that the whole election has caused is the best, it's fun to see a bunch of people lose their shit over the most basic pranks. Like seriously they replaced a flag and people are acting like /pol/ is going overboard and needs to be taken down. It's called harmless fun.

Have you actually ever been on the site for more than a bit?
say you agree with anita sarkesian on /v/
Yeah you do get flamed to shit with Anita but most people here would think you're dumb if you said the same.
mention you enjoyed life is strange on /v/
There were always a thread up for LiS when a new episode came out with actual discussion going on (and there still are some now and then)
say literally anything that goes against the zeitgeist and doesnt fit in with any boards narrative
There are plenty of people that go against what you'd think the ~narrative~ is
like literally have an opinion the majority of that shit website disagrees with, you will be either burried in insults or your post will be deleted
Your post doesn't get deleted, and you don't get banned just for having a unpopular opinion, if it's obviously trying to start some flame war then yea it will.
Yeah you get buried in insults because that's how people are there. Your regular insult like "youre a retard" or "shill" doesn't mean shit, it's practically the same as a disagree or dumb rating here.
The only times there is any sort of hugbox is when it's a feels thread but even then they're discouraged.
Go on the site for more than a few minutes next time
btw hugbox ≠ echochamber

That's funny because posts being deleted because they're different opinions precieved to be starting shit have always been the state of affairs since 2007. Turns out you can pretend any differing opinion starts a flame war because that has always happened on the site due to moderation that either doesn't give a shit or falls in line w/ the general consensus(especially on /v/, /pol/ and /co/). I've been seeing this happen for years, thanks.
An echo chamber is just a way of saying hugbox that has even less interesting or substantial discussions, which all 4chan is and has always been. The moment where you have to self censor yourself to even get any sort of substantial response from people in a community is the moment when you realize that the place is no better than any other internet forum with "internet funbucks, accounts and postcounts". The whole draw of 4chan has always been saying shit without a filter, having your biases confirmed and talking about what you masturbate to to other weirdos. The sooner people will realize that, the better, because it'll save us another boring paragaph about how reddit is somehow worse (when reddit is never mentioned or relevant) or how its some meeting of topminds having deep interesting discussion (lol)

Posts that get deleted for trying to start a flame war are the really obvious ones, like the ones that are trying to start some stupid console war just to bait all though mods hardly do their jobs and delete these. Maybe they did delete posts that just seemed like different opinions in 2007 regularly but I really don't think its like that now, there are few cases where on topic threads are deleted but they were both unpopular opinions and the popular one.
If that's the case now then it's pretty weird how I always see totally different opinions all the time then.
also you have to "self censor yourself to even get any sort of substantial response"?? Okay yea I admit at first you're going to get shitposters shitposting about whatever but after a bit the actual discussion starts unless the only boards you go are ones that are known for being complete shit. I've seen plenty of discussion that would go against the general consensus.

To be fair, I've been going to the site less and less ever since /pol/ started leaking but I feel like it's super disingenous to go like "oh man its better discussion than any other place maan". When the place has so many problems and how so many threads are just circlejerks (esp in /v/ (/a/ does ok sometimes and /vr/ is civil half of the time)).
I was probably being too quick to say something rash & dumb, But yeah most boards I've seen have a lot of problems w/ people shitposting irrelevant shit, chewing other ppl out instead of actually having discussions on posts that are sometimes v detailed and the sites moderation just being fuckin garbage.

All g
it's mainly the shit tier boards like /v/ for example that have these issues the most. Obviously you can't just say the site is better than any place for discussion but whenever there is proper discussion and is civil it works well.
You're oversimplifying how much effort and collaboration with other people that would really take. By a lot.

So on the one hand you say I oversimplify it, on the other hand it took them only 1 day and you are amazed about it.

I like how your only two examples are for one board and then you generalized it for the whole website. Also, I spent a good amount of my time arguing that LiS is horrible when it was new and I was faced with plenty of people who disagreed, matter of fact I would argue that it was the majority, so one of your two examples for one board is already wrong. I'm convinced that you've only ever been to /v/, and you didn't even stay for long.
"Say you agree with anita sarkesian on /v/" Like that proves anything lmao. You understand that most of what anita says are just straight up not true right? That's like saying "say you agree that 2+2=5 on /sci/" of course you'd get shit on but that doesn't mean /sci/ is a hugbox, it just means you're dumb.
The only people that believe all the bad reputation 4chan gets like
4chan is full of sociopaths
(lmao, you would have to seriously delude yourself to believe this shit)
are people that have never been to 4chan. Or at least never actually gave it a chance, maybe they went to /b/ or /pol/ for a minute just to get evidence for what they already believed, but they've never been to /lit/ and tried to discuss their favorite book. Just imagine for a second, how stupid it sounds for you guys to generalize /lgbt/ with /pol/.

nvm, mchapra already mentioned that he/she spoke too quickly, I didn't see that. I'll leave the post up though, snipping is for the weak.
