Not completely out of the question that Avellone is a massive fan/wanted to do an adaptation of the novel anyways and this lined up with the idea.

If it turns out to be that, THAT would make a ton of sense.

why even call it prey anymore
i don't get it. prey 2 comes along having nothing in common with its predecessor (beyond that ridiculous airplane connection) but gets a pass for still using the name, but this new prey game doing the same shit is unacceptable?? did anyone actually play the first prey game lol. prey 2 looked cool, sure, but uh why even call it prey anymore???
but yes i do hope this game at least keeps the portal shenanigans which IIRC was really the only unique aspect of Prey, otherwise what's the point.
I'm guessing it's because we were entranced by the "Coruscant Blade Runner" thing that Prey 2 had going on, along with it having a connection to the original wherein you were meant to meet the protagonist from the original, whereas this one, as I apparently discovered an hour or so ago, seems to have a lot more in common with Michael Crichton's Prey than the original game.
I still miss the alien bounty hunting game that we never got, but having a BioShock-style shooter with elements of a Michael Crichton novel is still enough to pique my interest. Especially since I have a soft-spot for this new era of singleplayer FPS campaigns that aren't utter modern military dogwash.
If this Prey turns out to be anywhere near as good as The New Order, or hell even BioShock 1, I'll probably throw my money at it. Though not immediately, since I have this dread feeling that there might be some manner of pre-order incentives afoot. I'd love to be proven wrong, but in this day and age, it's a thing to be expected.
I'm more confused and disappointed they walked away from the old concept so freely. Both of them felt completely off from what the old prey gave us, but in the least P2's trailer somehow tied the whole weird abduction angle into it. Now we've just got what seems to be a AAA fodder game banking off tried and true AAA tropes. Deadspaceshock with generic horror shadow monsters. It looks like a game that would've been VERY well recieved if it was released at the time P2 would have, but besides the potential of the mimic gameplay (that mug thing sounded like a fun puzzle mechanic), it looks like it could fall into forgettable territory without pulling some surprises
Ironman's post answered a lot of general confusion so thanks for that
Prey 2 seems like it would basically dead on arrival anyways, no one really played the first one.
[editline]4th August 2016[/editline]
And look on the bright side, with all the coverage that this Prey is getting, people will rediscover the first one, and according to what you're saying, they'll probably like it.

Because at least people would know exactly which games they are talking about when they say Prey 2. With the new Prey you gotta say "the newer one/2017 one" or "the original/prey '06" which isn't hard to do but it's not very sexy or efficient and just causes confusion.
It could be a really good horror game is the black smoke goo can disguise itself as anything at random. Like if you walk into a room with a few chairs, some of them are monsters, you die then come back, none of them are monsters but now the keyboard and lights are

Maybe we just wait and see what else the game has got going for itself before dismissing it so heavily?

I remember when I saw that trailer I thought "this should have been a Star Wars bounty hunter game".

Prophunt as a AAA title?

Actually there's huge connection between the two but it doesn't come up until more than half way through the game when it turns out you've been bagging people to shut them up about the incident that Prey covered, you then either choose to help Tommy clean the mess up or presumably kill him to complete the coverup.
Prophunt as a AAA title?
I was thinking something similar, like if you combined Prop Hunt with The Hidden. Maybe some of the objects around are fixed spawns, and some of them are random spawns. This way, the placement of objects is pretty much always different, so it'll be trickier for the "seekers" to automatically know when a prop is a prop and when a prop is actually killer nanomachines.
It's Arkane Studios and Chris Avellone so I'm fully on board with this. I completely trust these developers and I completely trust this writer to put together something great, to a far greater extent I may add than anything Human Head could have put together.

Yeah why not. Horror games are only scary the first time through. Only Resident Evil 4's regenerator manages to always be scary. Having it be different every time would keep it fresh and scary every time. This is why STALKER SoC is one of the scariest games I've played because ANYTHING can happen
I don't know, but whenever I hear about "the darkness between the stars" I can't help but think of some kind of eldritch horror.

I'm sure that pretty much everyone who's played the game has had an experience where you're just walking along and suddenly you hear a Bloodsucker, and then are hit randomly out of seemingly nowhere. That's true terror right there.

same universe, direct followup to the events of the first game, not a reboot with the exact same name despite a completely different setting and premise

i thought the prey 2 protag was still Tommy and this is what he got up to after spending Prey 1 honing his alien killing and magical native american skills

Tommy would have made a cameo, but the original Prey 2 would have been about someone else who got abducted by the aliens and eventually becomes a space bounty hunter.
i just want another science fiction with native americans because it was a fucking cool mashup
Alan Wake in SPACE.
AW being one of my favorite games, I have hopes for this game
Look at that, nothing at all from the original Prey.
Why is this called Prey again?
I guess we're never getting the original Prey on steam or GOG since they're using the exact same name on whatever this is.
I owned a box copy of the original Prey but have no idea where it went. Luckily, way back when, you could put the CD key into steam and get a copy of it.

That said, this new Prey looks pretty bangin', lack of connection aside.
Also to avoid the having two Preys issue they'll prolly throw a TM on this one or make it all caps to differentiate.
damn, black spider parasite goo enemies that must have taken a while to design.
Also don't put freeze frame video glitches into your game play footage, you're advertising gameplay, not a shlocky horror movie.

Managing to tie two stories together with a single cohesive event and one recurring character does not make a good story.
If anything trying so hard to tie things together with previous games when in a setting as different as Prey 2 offered compared to the first game will only hurt it some more. Dark Souls 2 also tied onto the first game by citing characters and referencing them almost directly and guess what, the story was still garbage and a ton of people just consider it fan fiction.

God forbid they want to stylize their promotional video a bit to emphasize the overall ambiance and theme of the game.

it's borderline garbage editing, it's a Gameplay Trailer there shouldn't be any room for jarring stopping and starting.
