I'm tired of hearing it so I just call myself a ponyfag if someone asks. I only talk about the show or anything pony related at all if anyone else is to me, which usually is in a private chat. I dare not to speak about it publicly unless if it's something like this.

To give the established community a name to be recognized by. It's not even so much the show, it's the fandom that surrounds it.
The only reason why MLP has a whole named fandom surrounding is because unlike other shows, such as Adventure Time, the whole phenomenon is really weird. Liking Adventure Time as a teenager or young adult is generally accepted, whereas liking MLP is (understandably) considered odd. Naturally, the opposition to the whole thing caused the MLP fans to band together and ultimately start a community.

Cosplaying and liking Adventure Time too much is just as fucking creepy as liking MLP too much. I'm not sure why people are using Adventure Time as a comparison, but assuming from an earlier pic with a very dedicated fan, fanbases are still fucking weird.

Invite only, yep.
Members can let whoever they want in, but otherwise you have to somehow contact someone in the group to get an invite. 39 members later it's been working pretty well despite not much happening with the group (I'm a lazy motherfucker), and if anything does go wrong it's a simple matter of locking down and laying down the bans.
