You've got Alien: Isolation, Titanfall, Stick of Truth, Bayonetta 2, the new Smash, Divinity, Ground Zeroes, Wasteland 2, and some really good indies scattered about, like Shovel Knight. It had some awful games just the same but by god 2013 was just the year of "we can make whatever careless, generic sequel we want and by god they'll fuckin' buy it." There was something cynical that permeated the whole thing.
There must have been a huge drought in 2014 because I remember W:TNO coming out and then I played nothing but tf2 for months because there was fucking nothing out
Would really like to know what track plays by the 4:25 mark.
You want a year that was pretty barren as far as high profile releases, try 2013.
I'm sorry, what? BioShock Infinite, The Last of Us, GTA V, Metro Last Light, AC4: Black Flag, Tomb Raider, etc. Some of these games were boycotted for bullshit reasons, but they're all great. Also it was the year of Gone Home but I wasn't going to mention that.

GTA V and Last Light were both real real good. The Last of Us I finished and liked, but I don't quite get the obscene amount of hype behind it. I thought the gameplay itself was fine, but I got the impression that the story had carried it for most people. Bioshock Infinite has amazing literally top-tier visual design and the gameplay is slick and competent, but the story gets silly the longer you think on it and I kinda took issue with how many advertised features from prior builds and gameplay trailers ended up having to be scrapped in favor of a straight linear shooter.

I thought it was quite decent the first time I played it and was curious what changed with the choices you make throughout the game, and there was weapons I never used. Turns out, as I learned, the choices are meaningless, all the other weapons (and to an extent the ones I used too) suck and are not even that fun to shoot, and the game is linear as fuck. Also, the plot sucks when you pay attention to it for more than half a second. God what a shit game, and I wouldn't have noticed too if it wasn't for it's perfect set pieces and presentation of in-game cutscenes that distract you for just long enough that you barely notice any of it's flaws the first playthrough. [editline]18th May 2017[/editline] Otherwise those are all good games. Just don't put the steaming pile that is BI next to them.

Bioshock Infinite isn't an amazing game (a lot of the issue I take with it was how it was utterly worshiped as the second coming for month or two after release) but Columbia is a really neat setting, the art design is incredible, and the shooting if not innovative or interesting is competent and avoids being clunky. It's not THAT bad, it was just really overrated for awhile.

If a movie had a good soundtrack despite being utter garbage would it still be a good movie? Of course not. Also the shooting is not only unfun and uninteresting, it's so far to those degrees it is innovative with how uninspired it is. I don't think I've ever played such mediocre combat in my life before. Also, as a final note about the one redeeming quality about the game, the presentation, art, and world were so good that it could distract almost anyone for an entire playthrough. That's impressive, but at the same time extremely saddening because of how much potential it really had. It could've been a masterpiece, but instead it was just mediocre.
If Infinite was not the bioshock ip, it would've been seen as a great game imo, it just didnt follow in the originals foot steps enough or even bioshock 2's
If Infinite was not the bioshock ip, it would've been seen as a great game imo, it just didnt follow in the originals foot steps enough or even bioshock 2's
Nah. In fact I would say nobody would even remember it at all. It would at most be remembered in whatever memes it would inspire, much like L.A. Noire.
If Infinite was not the bioshock ip, it would've been seen as a great game imo, it just didnt follow in the originals foot steps enough or even bioshock 2's
It still has to many gameplay problems to be considered great. Good, maybe sure. But it has it's flaws.
Nah. In fact I would say nobody would even remember it at all. It would at most be remembered in whatever memes it would inspire, much like L.A. Noire.
This sounds like something someone would say who's never actually played L.A. Noire and only knows it because of the memes. L.A. Noire had incredible facial flex technology (that had an impact on gameplay might I add) that still stands out to this day, as well as being the first real notable detective shooter. The only reason the game was overlooked was because it came out the same year as the best selling CoD game of all time. It was a Triple A shooter that required you to do something besides shoot baddies in the face, during the Modern Warfare FPS era. On the idea of Bioshock Infinite being remembered had it not been a Bioshock game, it absolutely would have. The expectations would've been marginally lower, and people would be less critical of it. The biggest problem with Bioshock Infinite imo has always been the two-weapon limit, which is the most non-Bioshock thing you could ever do. It's extremely restrictive on what you can do, which I can understand the criticism for. It's not very Bioshock-like, but if it wasn't a Bioshock game it wouldn't be a problem.
I don't think I've ever played such mediocre combat in my life before.
You have to be very sheltered if that's truly the case.
Every time I hear people bitching about the gaming industry being in decline, I instantly know they never play anything other than AAA games. There's always innovation and new things to do with indie games. People just have to take the time to look for them.
...well, the AAA game industry is dying, and that's the largest component of the market. AAA development cannot be sustained long term. just because good games are being made doesn't mean the overall trend isn't a decline
You have to be very sheltered if that's truly the case.
Mediocre in the grand scheme of things? Probably not. Mediocre in terms of Triple A gameplay? Absolutely. Bullet spongey enemies, meh special powers, more frustrating and a chore to deal with than actually entertaining. The only reason I completed the game was because of the art direction and the story.

Noire and my point isn't that the games were similar, but the reasons people remember it are not because it had any 'great technology' but because it's featured in memes mocking said technology compared to what we have today. The game never would've been remembered if not for those memes. Bioshock Infinite on the other hand is so mediocre it wouldn't stand out in anyone's memory if it didn't also have the title of Bioshock on it. Also, fuck off if you're going to have personal attacks. Mediocre =/= bad. By me saying it's mediocre I'm saying I've played both worse and better. Am I sheltered for being able to play shittier games than Bioshock Infinite? Or am I privileged for playing better games? If so, I'm sorry for you, since the best game you ever played was this mediocre pile. [editline]18th May 2017[/editline] I'm leaning on putting it on the worse side of mediocre too, since the game actively tries to deceive you with the decisions it gives you that don't actually amount to anything. They're there to make the player feel as if he's playing a better game. It doesn't even do this for any serious point - like how Spec Ops: The Line treats it's players for a specific effect - but no, it just does it for ~artsy~ points at best, and trickery at worst. A game that has that much contempt for it's audience is honestly pathetic.

It's nothing more than an expression for how you must've not played many mediocre games if you say Infinite's combat is the most mediocre you've experienced. Sorry about that.

Sorry about that.
To add to the discussion, I definitely see why somebody would consider it the most mediocre combat they've played, it really is. It works, it's not very fancy and kinda repetetive and boring. I have to agree tbh, few games pull off such a "safely" mediocre combat.
