It's adorable and all, but the ecologist inside of me is making me cringe like a motherfucker :v:
How have they not stripped that island down to the roots yet?
Take a rifle and pop a few of those damn things. They are terrible for the environment, and devastating to agriculture.
Edit: Realized how far off this island is from the mainland, sorry. I am literally judging the whole, "Holy fuck cull these bastards already" under the same context as the current Sika Deer problem in Japan(they are currently hiring foreign hunters to come cull them in West Tokoyo), and ongoing problems of rabbits in other parts of the world.
Those horny bastards will rule the island with their numbers.
this is the kawaiiest
Isn't that island notorious for Chemical Weapons manufacturing during WWII?
In all seriousness, I'd shit myself if I saw that many rabbits running towards me.
Rabbits haven't been quite the same to me since Lone Ranger.

Yep. When the island was opened back up as a historical monument/museum/attraction, some chuckleheads decided to let some rabbits loose. They gave each other piggyback rides until, well, you saw the video.

I don't really see a huge problem considering they're all contained on a tiny island that only exists as a tourist attraction. Unless more chuckleheads decide to take some back.
Rabbits haven't been quite the same to me since Monthy Python and the Holy Grail.
Yep.
Rampant rabbits
The problem from what I am seeing Lunik is that the majority of these rabbits appear to be domestics that were tossed by their owners. If they hybrid with the local species, it can really screw up the natural order of things. It seems they already have to a certain degree, and that's really, really bad.
What they could do is take some of these rabbits, and castrate them, and put them out as pets(considering they are pretty domesticated at the moment). The majority of the hybrids would have to be either made pets or culled, as their domestication could thin out the natural species on the island.
Also:
When the island was developed as a park after World War II, these rabbits were intentionally set loose. Many rabbits were used in the chemical munitions plant to test the effectiveness of the chemical weapons during World War II; however, those rabbits were killed when the factory was demolished.
Mutations.
As long as they stay on that island though they shouldn't be much of a problem, but as you mentioned, some chucklefuck smuggles a few of them on the mainland, and shit goes to hell like the Sika Deer.
You can be ignorant all you want...
but one day those mother fuckers will attack, and kill your livestock, and burn down every city in japan.
Adorable bunnies are a threat to mankind, and they must be stopped.

We have to kill the rabbit king to save the island
Gonna admit that I was taking this video in the context that it was like the current Sika Deer thing going on in Japan, where Japan is having to call in foreign hunters to cull them. Sorry :v:
This island is fucking amazing. I would live there. I shall become the Rabbit King!
