This upcoming expansion + the major 2.0 update that will be released somewhere this year makes it really worth getting now since it's on sale at the moment at Paradox. https://www.paradoxplaza.com/stellaris/STST01G-MASTER.html This version also has a steam key but you can also play through their own Paradox Launcher but i don't see many reasons why you would do that.
Considering I'm not too bothered about buying all the DLC, is this worth getting based on gameplay alone, and do you need multiplayer to have fun with it since I really don't know anyone who plays this but find the idea intriguing. I've seen a lot of mixed opinions on it honestly so I'm not sure.
I basically have the same questions as above. The sale price seems pretty good and I might consider jumping in. To get familiar, I've been watching Arumba play the release build Seems pretty fun, but again this is a far older build than what's currently out.
Considering I'm not too bothered about buying all the DLC, is this worth getting based on gameplay alone.
Yes, most of the DLC are small or just add in extra mechanics that might be fun, Utopia might be the only one you might want, because the main mechanic that DLC adds, I.E Ascension Perks are really fun to play with, however, the devs realized this and will be implementing the basic ascension perks (not all) and the system in for free in the next 2.0 update because it's a good mechanic that adds a lot to the game, the game itself is totally fine to play without, especially with the free updates that have vastly improved the game from what it was originally. If you enjoy it, then yeah, the DLC can add a lot of cool things to the game to make it more fun, but you may not even need the DLC, as Stellaris also has a massive modding community that's chock full of content! As an example, the biggest current mod for Stellaris, which is practically a total conversion for the game, Star Trek: New Horizons. (this is an old video, it's been updated significantly since then, it even had an expansion pack of sorts released recently, but the mod even back then was impressive as hell)
do you need multiplayer to have fun with it since I really don't know anyone who plays this but find the idea intriguing.
No, playing with A.I is perfectly fine, works well, so if you can't find anyone to play the multiplayer with that's ok, multiplayer is enjoyable though.
To get familiar, I've been watching Arumba play the release build
That is a old build yes, quite a few things have changed since then and the game will be changing drastically in the 2.0 update, the Cherryh Update is quite literally a gameplay redesign.
If you play multiplayer, what will be available for everyone depends on the host. So if the host doesn't own any of the DLC, then no one will have access to the new ships, leviathans etc. On the other hand, if the host does have all DLC, then everyone will have access to everything, even those who don't personally own the DLC.
Wow I can't believe how fucking wrong I was. Could have sworn it only related to galaxy shit, whoops!
I haven't had the ability to play setllaris is sometime and they are pumping out expansions.
Once you own half the galaxy it's hard to defend when someone attacks at one part and another attacks at the opposite side, getting around your own empire sucks.
Once you own half the galaxy you can probably have multiple fleets and still have each individual fleet out number your opponents.
Once you own half the galaxy it's hard to defend when someone attacks at one part and another attacks at the opposite side, getting around your own empire sucks.
Well that's just the kind of shit you have to deal with when your empire is very large. Probably gonne get even more obnoxious when the FTL rework goes live, and rightfully so in my opinion.
Once you own half the galaxy you can probably have multiple fleets and still have each individual fleet out number your opponents.
I don't earn much actually, probably due to my race being custodian robots.

Again, I haven't picked up the game myself yet, but have been familiarizing myself by watching a playthough on youtube.
How is FTL being changed? Again, I haven't picked up the game myself yet, but have been familiarizing myself by watching a playthough on youtube.
Currently there are 3 different methods of FTL, and you pick which one your empire uses when you create it. The rework is removing all but one (hyperlane) to make it more consistent and actually lets you set up choke-points and defense points in your empire. Some dislike it but sadly i think its necessary as currently static defenses are worthless. Not even counting the fact that it dies instantly, most of the time it can be jumped over or ignored by one of the two FTL methods that are being removed (warp and wormhole)
Wait are they keeping jump drive?
Wait are they keeping jump drive?
From what they've said so far, jump drive will still be in the game as a late game upgrade to hyperlane travel. As far as i understood it its still the same as endgame hyperlane, but has an activated ability to skip over one system and then it would be on cooldown and the ships would be vulnerable for a little bit or something. Jump drives as they are currently however aren't gonna be in there, iirc
That sounds so terrible. In a game that has prided itself on customizing your empire and that is a big part of it, it's so stupid to nuke it all to just one.
That sounds so terrible. But they provided a good argument for why it would help combat not be boring as hell and if it works than i think its a small sacrifice
Yeah, like i said its kinda sad. But they provided a good argument for why it would help combat not be boring as hell and if it works than i think its a small sacrifice
Combat in games like these is always boring, it just comes with the nature of it because of the scale. This won't improve anything, it'll just lead to shitloads of deadlocks where nothing can progress.
Well removing the jump drive will also mean changing how the Unbidden crisis is triggered because if I recall it starts shortly after somebody researches jump drives. I just hope they keep the option to limit what type of FTL is allowed in a game so people can simulate a Star Wars-type universe.
They're also adding in what are basically naturally-formed and (late tech) man-made wormholes that can give you an alternative to doing 100 hyperlane jumps. Also, they're making it so hyperlaning around requires the ships to move in-system to where the hyperlane hits the edge of the system, instead of just sitting on the outer edge and moving on cooldown.

Jump drives will still exist and the Unbidden crisis probably won't change, they'll just change how jump drives function.

Yeah all i said was a very general summary, if you are interested in details here is the full dev diary https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-dev-diary-92-ftl-rework-and-galactic-terrain.1052958/
I've played my last few games (both alone and with friends) with hyperlane on all civilizations, it makes for much, much more interesting games. Even my friends were convinced. Borders matter, politics are boosted and warfare is interesting. Wormhole was my favorite until I really gave hyperlane a try, I'm glad these changes are coming.
I've always used Hyperlane on the whole galaxy because it forces you to strategize, the best path to take, if you can risk going there. Perhaps there's a fallen empire in the way or another empire and you're not sure how to get beyond. It's limiting but in a good way, it gives you more goals to reach

From what I heard everything essentially came down to one big battle between two giant fleets and whoever lost pretty much lost the whole game. Dunno why they didn't limit it in the first place to be honest.
Better late than never I say. I've always wanted to maintain multiple fleets, but considering how valuable raw firepower is right now, it's basically giving oneself a handicap. I'm so stoked for both the update and expansion.

Actually never mind, it just went on sale again on the humble store ($16) So now the question is this: As a new player, am I better served jumping in now, when in about six months many of the game's mechanics are going to be tweaked? Or should I give it a try now, but play hyperlane only?
