I don't understand why we are treating homosexuals like victims its kinda fucked up and demeaning, We are all humans, before we blindly defend each other we first need to respect each other. I may just be a white asexual man but i would rather be treated like shit then treated as weak.
my mistakes being any slurs i've used in the past - i am steadfast in my belief that 'fag' and 'faggot' are not okay things to say outside of saying them as a gay person but i'm not the boss of anyone, say whatever you want.
Fag.
Slurs are only bad when you use them with the intent to hurt someone, and it's obvious when someone does. Dunkey is not this kind of person.
I imagine slurs like i imagine fictional violence. Imagine the first time you played a violent, M rated video game vs. how you react to playing a violent, M rated video game today. Or your first horror/slasher movie compared to one you'd see now. The reason its shocking and has power is a result of many different things but chief among them i believe is exposure, where if you're oversaturated with fictional violence, you'll build up a tolerance to fictional violence as its no longer strange or shocking. Same with language, if someone uses the word "fuck" every other sentence, it has no power compared to someone who never swears suddenly yelling out the word "fuck", and that can apply to slurs just like any other word. If you use them more, they mean less. I suppose you could also make a comparison to how drug addictions work where you build a tolerance up and need more and more extremes to get that original high, but there really is no way to get more extreme with language in regards to a single word, so you'll inevitably start to lose that initial high.
I'm a homophobe
Well, you're faggit
Well, you're faggit
look at this tough mugglehumper right here.
Did y'all seriously have a 3 page argument over Dunkey saying faggot?
You niggers think slurs are offensive when out of context? :buckteeth: [editline]15th May 2017[/editline] Learning English isn't half as fun when you can't use the coolest insults because "someone might get offended"
Did y'all seriously have a 3 page argument over Dunkey saying faggot?
Just wanted to share a video i found on /r/livestreamfails, didn't thought it would blow up like this :s:
but didn't the reddit thread blow up too lol
look at this tough mugglehumper right here.
Fite me, punk.
In the end people should stop giving shits about words that isn't being directly targeted at someone.
Context should matter, but for some reason when it comes to "bad words" it doesn't. Just saying faggot in general not directed at anyone is not as harmful as calling someone 'stupid' You ever see a news room when the word Fuck is said? You hear gasps like someone just sucker punched granny in the face
Reminds me of what Ian said in his CC on Tana. Either all of it is okay. Or none of it is okay. 7:56
I don't know whether this has been addressed in the 4 pages between this post and now, but you can't realistically expect every swear word to be on the same level
I got frequently bullied for being gay in high school so for me "faggot" isn't a very fun word. That being said, I do use words like "retard" sometimes when I get mad so I'm not exactly a saint myself, but I still plead everyone to at least have an understanding as to why people might get offended by words like these. We're all human, and we need to respect each other.
look, the last thing i'm trying to be is offensive, but telling me i'm a white knight because i'm against derogatory and slur language is pretty messed. as i said it's great you're not hurt by it, i don't wish that feeling on anyone. but your mindset is absolutely not shared by the wider lgbt community. and i'm not telling gay people what they can and can't say, dunkey isn't gay. but i mean, i can't win that argument against you because i'm a straight (enough) dude. being more offended that i'm against using the word than people using it intending to offend seems like kind of messed up hyperbole.
Dude, you're literally telling a person from the group you're trying to defend that they're wrong because they don't agree with you. Do you not see what you're doing? You've literally become one of those people who doesn't let minority people speak so you can be offended on their behalf. You're also using the fact that you're straight to shut down a gay person for not being offended at the thing you're being offended by, even though it doesn't affect you. Do you not see how fucked that is?
Did y'all seriously have a 3 page argument over Dunkey saying faggot?
Why do people even bother replying to someone trying to argue that dunkey is homophobic or whatever just by saying faggot I do not understand. Funny video tho
look, the last thing i'm trying to be is offensive
And yet here you are being an insult to everyone's intelligence
Context is really all that matters here. I guess you could somehow construe that he meant it in a harmful way, but you could tell it was more or less joking around at the same time. Especially seeing how Dunkey is, I see this more as a joke than him being hateful towards gay people. As for people that were somehow offended by his use of the word, I'm pretty sure he wasn't targeting it towards you, or even a larger group of people outside of that stream. There's no reason to be so sensitive as to be so personally offended by someone saying a word that clearly wasn't targeted towards you. If he somehow comes out and says that "he hates faggots" in a non joking way, then I'd say being offended is justifiable. Or maybe I've just grown desensitized to "faggot" after spending like 4 years on 4chan and my life on the internet in general. Hell, I heard it a lot back when I used to play TF2 before I started even going on 4chan, and it never really offended me at all. Also never really offended the gay friends I played the game with.
We have entered a new age of moral outrage like victorian times outwardly shaming people
We have entered a new age of moral outrage like victorian times outwardly shaming people
Agreed. I can dislike and not use slurs while also not being personally offended when others do. I do find it interesting how people will use less foul language around me because I choose to not use it, even though I've told them that it doesn't bother me.
That's more projecting on your part considering I didn't call anyone here a go homophobe. The fact that you instantly went to defend yourself against a supposed accusation Is pretty odd though.
The entire attitude of this debate is childish. Speaking as an LGBT person, I hate it when people talk for me, and accuse people of bigotry that isn't even bigotry. The attitude of this debate is condescending and shaming and it puts down any honest discussion, by either outwardly accusing or implying that the only reason to be against their point of view is because you're a bigot, secretly or otherwise. It's not an attitude that wins discussion. It's not an attitude that wins the LGBT community allies. It pushes people away and helps no one. Tweets like this are a perfect example. At the drop of a hat the type of person I've seen arguing in this thread will immediately condemn the other side and made passive aggressive, sarcastic remarks that are designed to put the other side down and make them feel ashamed or like bigots, and to make them look like bigots to others. And as for people like me, who are LGBT, and don't buy in to this bullshit? We are ignored or suppressed for being inconvenient. Same for black people, who are routinely labelled 'race traitors'. I am sick of being ignored because I don't fit the agenda. I believe there needs to be a new push of LGBT rights activists, feminists, and civil rights activists dedicated to rational discussion, understanding, and outreach, and people like Neil Cicierega need to stop poisoning our image. Being an egotistical pretentious shit to anyone who disagrees with us is only ever going to hurt us and feed the alt right. The same alt right who's fundamental beliefs I believe stem from a fear and paranoia that people like Neil Cicierega are what we are all like, and that we are going to take away their way of life. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and that is what the alt right is at it's very core, which then causes another reaction from the left, with ever growing extremity between both sides. And it's sad because I've seen many among the alt right show a strong positive reaction to leftists that have the capability to be rational, understanding, and kind. My point is don't be a cunt to people if you want them to believe your opinion. Acceptance for LGBT people and minorities in general will never be achieved through militant belief, offense, and being a pretentious cunt. It is won through extending your neighbor your hand and talking to him like a human being.
Did y'all seriously have a 3 page argument over Dunkey saying faggot?
I don't even actually know who Neil Cicierega is, but every time I see him, he's just being a holier-than-thou jackass like a class bully who also plays teacher's pet.
I don't even actually know who Neil Cicierega is, but every time I see him, he's just being a holier-than-thou jackass like a class bully who also plays teacher's pet.
Neil Cicierega is a musician and animator with a long history of internet fame, dating back to early 2000s crude animation as well as Potter Puppet Pals, and extending to today with mashup albums and even a TED talk I believe. His work is actually pretty interesting but as you've said the way he talks to people is flawed. I certainly wish I could talk to him about it. I wouldn't condemn him as a person though because that's the exact kind of extreme thinking we need less of.

I like his work, but I hate his personality. [editline]16th May 2017[/editline] What Sandman said, basically.
my mistakes being any slurs i've used in the past - i am steadfast in my belief that 'fag' and 'faggot' are not okay things to say outside of saying them as a gay person but i'm not the boss of anyone, say whatever you want.
if it's a bad thing to say in any context then why does being a gay person make it okay to say
Just to clarify something that might bring up a bit of confusion, that Neil Cicierega tweet was from around the time Jontron said "retarded" and is not at all related to homophobia or the word faggot. But I do agree entirely that people who try to silence and shame others by calling them bigoted are not at all helping with the issues that surround the "slurs", and only give them more power as words that can be used to hurt others. Conversations are more important than individual words, but are impossible when people on either one of the sides are sticking their fingers in their ears and shouting that they can't hear you.

So the Rusty postus-operandi is still to post contradictory arguments until you can't be bothered to reply anymore, huh?
"shut up, you're a faggot" -- toxic asshole in random game "yup, gonna rape your ass" -- me, as a serious comeback when I was like 13 "yup, gonna rape your ass" -- me, as a way to laugh at dude now "i'm gay, and that's some grade-A faggotry" -- me this seems like the natural solution to the issue
Dunkey calling people faggots is funny. Westboro baptists holding up signs saying "god hates fags" is offensive. People who don't understand context are really annoying to have arguments with.
