Users donated to the fund in the first place under the pretense that it would go to this community. While I'm sure that some people would be fine with it, dumping it all into a charity would kinda shit on a lot of people's expectations of what this was all for.
Exactly why I don't want to jizz it all away on charity. We've got the money and there's no downside to retaining it until a decent idea comes along.
I know I posted about it on just the last page, but is there seriously no one who wants to do a tournament of some kind? Grab a FTP game (Dota 2, TF2), something cheap, or something everyone has anyway (Counter-Strike or whatever), make people team up and create team names and banners and shit? Could even allow people from outside FP to participate, maybe with some rules about team composition (a certain share of active FP'ers).
Would of course take some organization, but yeah.
I would be willing to do a Heroes of the Storm (free moba) tournament, but I just need to find the time to put it all together.
If you put some effort into some initial planning, I am sure you could get some funding. Problem arises when people talk about all the fantastic things they want to do, but then don't actually do anything to make it happen.
I think part of the reason people haven't been using the fund is that they will focus on the funding first, and the actual activity/event second. You don't need approval to post a thread which announces a super cool tournament.
My problem is latency and servers. If I'm in west coast US do I really want to even try if I'm going to have to play on servers hosted in the UK with >300 ping?
Could we send something to Facepunch Droid's developer, @tisseman890 ? His work in his app has been invaluable to many, has been a decent stopgap while the css for the mobile browser version is ironed out, and being a community-focused project it should qualify for some sort of support. Even just sending him a beer would be enough!
On that note, after FP's API is released and made public, I wouldn't mind at all setting up a competition/hackathon to develop apps and services that use the API for the good of the community, and we could use some of the fund money to pay for servers and domains for people to work with, as well as hosting the winning entries for a year or more. I dunno if it can work, but I can think of a few ideas that could be both fun and useful, and FP has its fair share of decent developers, so surely better ideas can pop up!
In any case, we don't need to spent any of it ASAP so perhaps as time goes on things may arise that would warrant something from the community fund.
Other then that, use the money to perhaps create events and competitions with money or gifts as the prize and to those who simply deserve it, right now the Facepunch Droid developer can have my $ that i spent on my silly title a year ago.
buy a gasmak for every gold member and a horse mask for every blue
Funding a Camp FP revival.
Do we have any expenses coming out of it right now?
Buy dental products for everyone in that thread in the videos section that said they didn't brush their teeth.
Us author types in the Creation Corner have been talking about running an open short story contest, winner decided by poll/strawpoll posted in GD - would we be able to chip off some of the cash for the prize? I had thought of doing the normal Facepunch thing of just buying a steam game for the winner, but I figure that more people'd be interested if it was an actual chunk of money on the line (plus, at Hezzy's discretion, this way we could have first, second and third place prizes).
I like the Summer/Christmas event idea.
Alternatively, give me 220 diamond ratings, that's something we all can get behind I'm sure!
Walk into a casino, all on black.
Summer/Christmas raffles and tournaments would be really cool imo. Like has been said above, charity is nice and all but is just kind of boring and not really the point of a community fund, it's just spending the money for the sake of it. Let's at least do something cool like a raffle or tournament.
that'd be a good excuse for me to finish a game
I'd be right up for some tournaments. No reason we couldn't do a few games, a MOBA, CSGO, etc etc.
i think it would be better to buy toothbrushes and stuff for everyone else because they are more likely to get used
Been done so many times, I'm still even open to hosting them for free.
Got the resources and they ain't used, plus we've still also got a semi-sponsorship with a hosting company from before the move but Kiwi was handling that.
If it can actually be done unlike the 4 other attempts, sure. Tournaments haven't really worked out on FP because people just AWOL or get so salty over "balance" that they just ragequit out of it.
hire me to write some mobile css
God damn it I had this idea earlier today, but either way I have an addition for this.
I don't use such an inferior OS (jk) but IIRC iOS/macOS needs an actual Mac to develop the apps on. Is it possible we could chuck together some cash for a cheap Mac so @tisseman890 (at his discretion) could work on said iOS app? He mentioned that previously FYI though with the API and all.
All I can come up with besides giveaways would be to rent a couple of dedicated servers in a few regions and use them to host various games, and that doesn't really seem ideal/good enough.
So fucking down for this

Had a recent conversation with Hezzy.
It's still there.
I wanna see some of that funding be put to use on a small scale but there is some amount.
