I was clicking on the icon, which is much larger to click.
It works now
Big woop just sounds sarcastic to me. "You created an HIV vaccine? Big woop"
I don't think we need optimistic back but we do need a rating specifically for expressing ourselves when we need to call something gay.
are you clicking the number underneath the rating?
This is very late but on page 1 there was a really good dumb box design so i made some terrible css to swap the snowflake rating with it:
span[data-label="Snowflake"] > a > img {
content: url(https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/219/343b4bcc-f918-4f91-b5a8-458220f73798/download.png);
}
if you click the icon, you actually add one to said rating. as others mentioned, you click the number and it displays who rated with that icon,
Idk, I liked optimistic for what it was too. It had it's purpose that isn't really filled by any of the current emotes. That + calling stuff gay which is the real loss obv
TBH I also miss informative. Good idea is an alright replacement, but informative also had an interesting "double-meaning" of sorts as well. It either meant:
A: "This post was genuinely informative of something unknown to what was probably a large group of people"
B: "This post contains some genuinely creepy / fucked up stuff in it"
So basically if you saw a thread with like 30-40 informatives as the top rating you knew that there was either something serious going down (large natural disasters), or something really legitimately informative popped up. Haven't ever come across a thread with informatives as the top rating that wasn't interesting in its own way.
most of the old ratings grew on people over time so it wasn't uncommon for them to use them in a sarcastic way - specially things like informative and artistic.
like i'm overall pretty pleased with all the forum changes but we had multiple conversations as a community about what ratings to use and keep over time so it feels a bit shit to have to go through it all over again
snowflake is the best new rating, please keep it
please replace diamond with something more suitable that may actually relate to the forum's history. also love sends a much more accurate message than sympathy.
ei no stop being so stingy about diamonds I can understand most of you being short on coins but give it a chance
I disagree, I think bad spelling is a welcome return from the old days.
has anyone said lucky yet? i changed my mind. i've only seen about 2 lucky ratings so far on the whole forums
Bring back the dumb rating. In old-punch it was the best when you recieved a lot of dumbs!
idk try hanging around game threads that centers around gacha and lootboxes
One thing I've noticed that at some point I tried to mouseover the rating to see what it even meant - which means the symbol is not clear enough.
I think that if a rating has a "double meaning" (Such as the old Optimistic being used for anything actually optimistic or lgbt related), it's better than having 2 more specific ratings.
I'm going to steal Loriborn's post for a coin and add a few notes.
Agree & Disagree
Funny
Late
Love Renamed from Friendly, which I think is an improvement because it makes it more vague.
Sympathy Either get rid of it completely or at least use the pensive emoji as already suggested. The current one looks like "constipation" more than sympathy and it looks weird to see it under a post with some tragic news
Artistic Keep, just make the color pallete a bit more visible.
Cookie Too vague. It seems like a rating that should have 2 meanings like Optimistic, but honestly looks kinda bland. See Cake under additions.
Child Molester Stupid, weird vague icon, get rid of it.
Baby 10/10 addition
Coin Great addition, though I think both coin and diamond should stand out. As already suggested, the old Winner-like medal design would work better, especially for tiers. Additionally, put the ratings next to each other. What would be even better is to have Diamond and coin appear a bit separate or more special from the rest: Either have them animated, have them glow or have background, or perhaps put them to the far left of all ratings to make them more visible, so that 5 people rating someone asshole is less significant than 4 people rating it coin, not to mention diamond, which should have its position determined by its actual value.
Good Idea Too specific. See Useful under additions
Snowflake Use Baby instead, Snowflake can be a bit vague in meaning for a lot of people.
Diamond See Coin
Asshole See Dumb under additions.
Bad Spelling I don't think it's useful, and generally if someone has a post full of broken words, people will rate it Funny instead.
Bad Reading Useful for news topics.
Cute Icon is vague, just use Love.
Lucky Too vague and too specific at the same time. Other ratings more relevant to the context should be used.
Big Woop I'm not 100% convinced, but it should stay. However, the icon should be something like an ant or some other tiny animal, so the icon itself means "insignificant", "not a big deal" or "who cares". Not too sure on that either, but the icon is confusing and looks a bit too positive.
Additions:
Cake A slice of cake, replaces cookie. Can mean either "good job", "congratulations" or "delicious".
Useful More a general positive rating than good idea. Can mean either "useful" or "good idea". Maybe use something else than a tool as an icon to prevent people using it to rate "tool". Honestly, you could just rename the good idea rating to "Useful" and it would be pretty much fine.
Dumb The dumb rating is the symbol of Facepunch forums, you can't get rid of it. Also it's a bit less rude to call someone a dumbass rather than an asshole.
Lewd See HighVoltage's post for the image suggestion. Specific sexual connotation to differentiate it from Love, which can also be used for sympathy. Can mean "sexy/hot", "lewd", "holding hands"
Optimistic Worked as intended before. Can mean "optimistic" or "gay"
20 ratings is too many ratings in my opinion, 15 is a bit easier to swallow.
Diamond is definitely useful. That one guy (Snowmew or something like that?) on Oldpunch made that really good post on nuclear power a few years ago, for example. That's a diamond-worthy post in my opinion while most would only be a coin-worthy post at best. I think the ratings should be condensed into just coin in the rating menu though and you should choose between the two on the confirmation popup when you try to rate though.
We're going to go years constantly explaining what Big Whoop means, especially as new users from non-English countries continue to join FP.
Good idea being a lightbulb precedes the thinking emote by about a decade in existence, the lightbulb is as facepunch as it gets.
Good idea was the one rating I wanted to come back for the longest time, don't ruin my reunion with an old friend.
Click on the number, not the actual rating.
While optimistic is surely a debatable rating to reintroduce, I definitely think "lewd" is much more context specific. It'd really only be used as a sort of humorous rating used when someone posts things that are both funny and naughty, like news about Trump fucking a prostitute, or Loverslab posts in Fallout thread. I wonder exactly what "lewd" adds to the discussion in a meaningful way. Agree, disagree shares some sort of valuable opinion on subject matter, but "lewd" is not an opinion as much as a fact. If someone posts a porn image, it's lewd by definition, but that doesn't mean it's good porn or bad porn, just that it's porn; and that's something quite obvious to the viewers already. For good porn, we already used "friendly," back when porn threads were allowed, and if it was bad porn, we used dumb.
Really, if porn threads continue to stay banned, as they likely will, then lewd has even fewer uses outside of comedic value; like "Trump piss tape" article gets posted and everyone rates lewd because "lol it's sex related" when it really adds little content to the article. It's a rating that acts simply to make a joke and the value of the joke is simply that something semi-sexually related (or not, like if someone posts a screenshot from Breath of the Wild and it gets rated lewd because Link's in his Gerudo outfit and everyone laughs) gets rated lewd.
Really lewd falls out of use because FP sort of shies away from overt sexual discussion that isn't either comedic or in the form of furry/hentai avatars.
Make "Dumb" the new "Diamond" and increase the cost to 25 coins. The ultimate insult.
Baby is my favourite new rating, it's so perfect for some posts
It takes 25 coins away from the person you rated as well
The 2 I don't really care for existing are Child Molester and Lucky.
"Asshole" just seems whiny to me. Like saying "you're being mean!!!! >:("
The only real scenario I'd actually use it in is when someone brags about being a douche and I don't feel like replying.
big whoop dude it's just a rating
