If you really cared you would disable auto-downloading of media files and click to load them.
I would like the animated Backgrounds to come back, the suggestion on leaving it static until hovered over is a neat idea, but I don't think the people who jumped on the "exploit" (what would you even call this?) should be punished for it. I think of them as the people who try to discover security flaws in systems, better to know about it now than later and the ones I've seen so far are tastefully done imho. Better than a half naked chick/anime/furry/whatever the person jerks it to.
It's easier said than done but if garry wanted to remove the apngs he could give everyone with a background 20 coins and remove their background, giving everything a fresh reset.
I'm guessing it doesn't matter too much since garry is thinking about having animated backgrounds anyway.
It's only an oversight and isn't anything technical. PNG supports extensions and this one is unfortunately unpopular to users because people associate "animated image" with GIF and don't know any better to use a deprecated and terrible format.
Likewise I've had an animated avatar all along even though I was a blue member, since they were allowed at the start. (At least until the Hoffing happened but I was luckily golded soon after).
Just remove the ones that are actually massive in size or are seizurific enough and let everyone else keep them.
My BG wasent finished rendering, arnold renders take too long on this toaster ;_;
facepunch is small enough as it is, do we really need to ostracize new members even more by having even more special treatment for certain users? favoritism is probably our biggest faults because we are such a small community as it is, there's no reason to highlight that further, especially as the forum's spotlight grows with facepunch ltd publishing games and using these forums for all sorts of products that are distinct from rust/gmod
It's not like the upgrades page was unclear about Garry's intentions - 256x512 and non-animated. I appreciate that people want to make some cool stuff, but I don't think it's entirely fair to grandfather people in just because they A) didn't care about the rules B) were quick than others in not caring about the rules. It would only encourage "this is why we can't have nice things"-behaviour, because if you're quick enough, you can actually get nice things.
With that said I don't really care as long as the huge ass backgrounds go. Anything more than maybe 512kB-1MB seems more than a bit silly for what's supposed to be a static image.
it was more of a "those who migrated earlier got their hands on this".
early migrations were predominantly very active gold members
Gold memebers should be able to upload animated bgs, just like the old days.
Tbh I just went with it because we were in the process of having a discussion about whether or not they should be allowed and it got me thinking about what I'd pick, and I had a good enough idea to put in the effort. I started thinking about how on Oldpunch, blue members' avatars got restricted further, but those who already had larger avatars got to keep them, so I figured, "why not?"
Of course, it would've been much smaller if .gifs were allowed in the first place. I've got two versions saved on my PC that are a fraction of the size, because that's what I tried first before realizing that everyone used APNGs.
Reminds me of those old animated avatars on YouTube, people scrambled for accounts with those after they were discontinued.
LISTEN BUDDY IM NOT A CODE HACKER I JUST READ THE NEWS
It's alright, even I am not a hacker despite having a degree in CS :)
I didn't give myself an animated avatar to say "fuck the rules" I did it to see if only gifs were blocked cause apng is still not recognized everywhere. Do you think the guy that found out {{}} broke the forums got punished?
Why is a few people being unique so terrible?
Give everyone the option to obtain them or remove them entirely. As others have pointed out, needless favouritism is pretty shite.
I'd rather they were all removed, we already have animated profile pictures so it just needlessly eats data.
You could also have two options when buying backgrounds with the animated one being more expensive.
Or make it possible to upgrade your background image size limit so the more coins you spend the more animation you can cram in.

I'm so glad I started this apng trend, people are so creative
Suuuuuuuuuuure
First of all, I'm not trying to imply that anyone is an evil asshole who just wants to break rules, but you sure have to do a pretty liberal interpretation of "should not be animated" to arrive at "yeah I'll make this big flashing apng that's definitely in the spirit of the law". Don't you think that's kinda just taking something and running with it? And second of all, it's entirely inconsequential why you did it, if the rules are that no animated backgrounds are allowed, then it shouldn't depend on when you decided to do one anyway. There's nothing wrong with a few people being unique, there's something wrong with a few people being unique because everyone else could put their personal need for uniqueness aside for lil' bit.
With that said - as I said - I don't really care as long as backgrounds (animated or not) don't get too huge in size. If people want a unique background, that's fine by me, as long they don't bloat up the site with something that no one else is really gonna care about.
I lov my good dog but I didn't make an APNG to be special. I just did it because I saw other people doing it lol.
If APNGs were removed, that's fine. I'm not gonna weep about going back to a static image. I got this gif from an iOs sticker so it shouldn't be a huge file I don't think.
^criminal scum right here
Sure, I wasn't the one to bring up "uniqueness" anyway. I feel like I've probably made my point but I guess I'll put it very plainly:
A) I don't care about animated avatars as long as they're not too big in size
B) I don't think people should be grandfathered into having animated avatars
There's probably a happy medium there somewhere as well.
This is forcing your constraints onto people who don't share the same plight. Just put an "Animated Backgrounds?" on/off switch in preferences for people concerned about data, rather than doing an outright global ban.
Not going out of the way to remove stuff from some users isn't favouritism
Sure I ran with it and enjoyed the creativity it spawned but that doesn't make me a evil person that Garry loves more than everyone else.
I feel like most people are just upset that they missed the train and now want the train to be derailed because of it.
There is no need to cry cause another user has something you don't. I understand, I would be a little peeved if I missed out but I wouldn't pull out a pitchfork over it
How about we just let everyone have animated backgrounds, just make sure they're not over 3mb in size or something.
This or removing them all is seriously the only reasonable option. Data aside I find some of the animated ones really annoying due to their size or flashing.
Most people advocating in favour of keeping them already have one so it's hardly an impartial opinion. It's only a flashly background like who gives a shit if they're removed? It's like caring about the colour of your name.
Refunds ultimately don't matter but I'm pretty sure literally everyone read the "do not make your background animated" line before making their background.
Deleting existing APNG's should be left up to Garry TBH
Only with filesize restrictions. I have pretty strong internet, and I've noticed some chugging from time to time. I can't imagine doing it with shit internet.
We're still missing options to hide avatars/backgrounds, although I can imagine that is a low-mid level priority all things considered.
