This is still incredible but it's all hard surface.
Photorealism has applications other than games, which engines like Unreal sometimes get used for. It also shows a tool that can be used for various applications even in heavily stylized games as opposed to requiring photorealism
Raytracing would be so boss in horror games
the way they always have their mouths open when talking is like a milder version of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj172R90-TM
What's up with literally fucking everyone presenting ray tracing stuff these past couple of days?
It's mostly nvidia & ILM they've been working on this tech for years because it solves so many bullshit issues with game development - most notably lightmaps.
The alien has no risk of a uncanny valley effect
justa a couple o' nazis bumblin around
it's the mouth their mouths are the problem IMO: something about them is off. i get the feeling it may be related to the way the character's teeth are lit/shaded, or the way the muscles of their mouths move. the rest seems okay: the mouth kills it for me
This is still extremely impressive, I'm kinda surprised that everyone is knocking it so much. There will never be 100% photo-realism in video games, but holy shit are we getting close. Imagine seeing this even 5 years ago, it's incredibly fucking impressive for being rendered in realtime.
the buggest issue with the unncany calley still is the fact that, no matter how real that is, you're still fully aware its CGI. it was the same when the whole incident with Moby Dick and Kojima. the very first time i saw Andy serkis's monologue was side to side to the alien face, and i was amazed at how the mocap managed to capture the expresions on his face without even the need of mocap gear - until someone pointed that was not serkis but a CGI, mocaped version of himself.THEN i was in full awe of this stuff.
Still feels a bit "off", but definitely very impressive stuff. The alien thing was cool as hell.
realistically though, i can't see it being implemented widely for another couple of years. ray tracing in games is a big deal though. Reflections, specular, lighting, transparency all that stuff is gonna look reeeally nice in a few years
Here's another: With 'Siren,' Unreal Engine blurs the line between CGI and reali..
