People like to share their interests. For many people that includes sharing their porn interests.
What about the Drugs thread then? That is much more apt comparison and we've had that for years with absolutely no objections. Unlike porn, most drugs are also illegal in prety much every country the users of the forum are in. (Note: I am NOT advocating that we remove the drugs thread)
Something being taboo in general culture is no reason to ban it here. Many subjects discussed on Facepunch are taboo in one place or another. It only brings as many complexities as you allow it to. It you define a set of rules and moderate the threads there should be no complexities.
It would be moderated the same as any other content. At least two mods have already said they have no problem moderating porn threads.
I don't remember that happening but if it did it was a long time ago. People in the current threads seem pretty intent on not allowing that shit and in an entirely research oriented look through the Catgirl thread and the hottest illustrated girls thread I didn't see anything suggesting posters there would want anything like that.
Then don't, there are other moderators who have already said they'll do it, hell multiple poster have said they'll do it if no one else is willing to.
Well you should probably ban drug discussion then, since drug use is illegal in most countries. We have a fair number of users from Russia, so we should ban the gay chat threads. Fuck, we should tell Garry to disable the entire file hosting feature because users can upload and share literally anything now, on Facepunch's servers no less. Arguing to avoid maybe facing a civil suit based on porn is ridiculous, you're more likely to get action brought against you over a picture of a wok.
In the 13+ years Facepunch has been operating as a forum one under aged user was convinced to show their dick. Unfortunate, yes, but it also resulted in the users who convinced him being banned and reported to the police, the thread nuked, and everybody agreeing that shit was out of line. Literally no one wants that shit back, but porn on its own does not lead to that. That wasn't even a porn thread by the end, it was a fucked up challenge thread. As long as we keep an eye out for that shit we'll be fine.
Facepunch has had porn threads literally from the beginning. It hasn't helped or hurt our reputation because it never has been and never will be a major facet of the forum. A porn section just makes it easier for people who don't want to see porn threads to ignore it, like how I ignore the Rust section.
A porn section would take no more effort to moderate than any other section. I don't see these risks you're so worried about, at least I don't see how they're any different to the risks we've been dealing with for the past 13+ years.
Welp, its been locked. There goes my time waster at work.
why hasn't my tread been locked yet
The Hot Girls thread is still open because apparently drawn porn is worse than real porn.
Pretty sure this is how Facepunch has always operated
Both of these people have good points but doesn't mean we should hard line a yes or no. We can be here for fucking ages with these dumb arguments when a system that worked was already in place.
No more limp dicking, welcome to dorkster challenge.
No new porn/NSFW threads. Go bump the ones you know, ill be checking them.
(Vanilla) Hot Girls thread is a go, Catgirls Thread is a go. Bring me more threads to check.
Both Hot Girls and Catgirl threads self moderate their content, and already have strict OP guidelines, they know if they fuck up they're gone.
it'd be dumb to close these bc one little shithead crying in here, and they been there for years we're not a forum for porn bc of them lol.
If you NSFW thread cannot self moderate, you get closed. Further changes from those higher than me can change things,
but you need to prove you want those threads badly enough or go away.
So we get the two original threads.
Nice. The furry/Anime one was locked because?
that's fine but where does that leave F&A? was it closed solely because it's the source of this current controversy?
no furries allowed, did u honestly think we keep that
my personal opinion is that I don't judge FP if they wanted a site-wide smut ban. facepunch is a development studio with a reputation (yes, I laughed as hard as you when I typed that) and if they don't want to associate with low brow smut threads plaguing their forums, I can't blame them.
also ironic considering my username but whatever
someone bump hot animated girl thread, i couldnt find it.
ur 2d women are ok
To be fair the Furry + Anime thread didn't have strict OP guidelines because it was created as a joke on beta forum.
I mean, entirely fair, but we could've just remade the OP with rules and all that stuff.
this is gay discrimination smh........
But it has pretty consistently self-moderated. To a rather militant extent. That's literally the only rule, and it still got locked.
Are you trolling or did every functional neuron just sieze up at the word 'furry'?
There were people in the F+A thread REQUESTING that a mod update the OP.
I was one of them yes.
Also @PsychoFox67 , dude why did you open up another thread and not even post rules. That doesn't help at all.
i was but the thread didn't work out
Thanks for the feedback. And it looks like other people share that sentiment as well. I thought I covered all use cases with my initial options, but it looks like I was mistaken.
I've split up the original question into two seperate questions. This should give people the ability to properly give their opinion on both subjects.
If anyone has made their first answer based on their opinion on avatars/backgrounds, please double-check your answer and make any applicable changes if necessary.

Question 1
<<< CLICK ME <<<
Question 2
Explicit avatars/backgrounds are of course not allowed.
But should users be allowed to use suggestive images in their avatar/background?
To clarify a few terms:
Explicit; fully visible lovemaking, penors, vagoos, uncovered boobies, ...
Suggestive; things like extremely short clothing, covered but very visible boobies, erect nipples under clothing, cameltoes, underboob, pantyshots ...
Rate this post to cast your vote:
🎨 - No. Nothing that could be even considered suggestive should be shown in avatars / backgrounds.
⏰ - Suggestive content can be allowed to some extend. But it should not be the main focus of the image in question.
🍀 - Nothing wrong with suggestive avatars and backgrounds (The average Reagy avatar goes here)
✏️ - As long nothing explicit is visibly shown, anything goes. Black censor bars should be sufficient.
🎈 - Nope. This poll is still bad. I hope your phone charger breaks.
Again. Thanks for the feedback. It's always appreciated~
closing the furry thread and being like "what we have now is fine" seems like a cop-out just to keep furry porn off the website tbh
I know right
gay thread needs a new OP tho - closed it for now
Its almost as if trying to get something like that together when you already had a functional one leads to trolling bullshit.
Frankly if you want to be a goof and put up outright porn with censor bars, it's on you for making yourself look like a creep.
what does this even mean
oh so no more gay threads? or can all of the closed threads be made with better OPs
I mean, that's exactly what it is, postal has explicitly stated multiple times that the reason it was closed was because of the fact that it allowed furry porn (once here, multiple times on discord)
Which raises the question, is this 2008 or what? Seriously, who actually cares about that anymore?
Pvt. Martin was the OP to the old gay guy thread and I cannot allow that.
make a new one or w/e ill be editing the OP
Honestly, go for it but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets locked again.
apparently 20+ pages of debate isn't wanting it bad enough
You bring up some valid points, but you're also confusing something that appears in the proximity of certain behavior with the cause of that behavior.
The weirdest boner thread, which I think is really what everyone is referring back to with most of these concerns, was destined to fail. The problem was that its stated goal was to post the weirdest shit possible. It created an environment where people were encouraged to push closer and closer towards the boundary of what's morally acceptable, and in doing so it pushed away any moderating forces. This wasn't a result of porn, this was the result of a "who can be the most disgusting" competition.
Predators going after children is a real threat in any online social context. Any platform that allows people to communicate with each other that doesn't have some foolproof method of preventing minors from accessing it is a possible vector for criminals to prey on minors. I don't think the presence of porn makes this more or less likely. I think an unmonitored user base does. It just so happens that, because of it being relegated to those areas, websites with porn or other sexual content are often poorly monitored.
As for the associated legal risk, I would look to precedent. My guess would be is that the near totality of legal action taken against websites hosting pornography is for active distribution or sale of CP, but I don't know a lot about British law.
As for whether or not it's worth the effort to enforce the rules I mean hey that's your call. It's your website, you can do or not do whatever you want.
and of course by the fucking time I finish typing out my thesis paper everything is already decided ffs cmon im trying to like actually communicate n shit
