His argument about battlefield 3/4 kit unlocks is just dumb
it didn't take that long to unlock anything in those games, and saying that it was a 'super long grind' and 'gave those that bought the unlocks a super advantage' is just stupid
I'm pretty sure the default weapons in those games could easily fight on par with the unlock weapons if you were good enough
The only objectively advantageous pay-to-win aspect in the unlocks of the battlefield games were the vehicle unlocks, which were straight upgrades, but even then they did not take long to unlock whatsoever
Never finished DA:O, so I thought I'd make a second attempt a couple of years ago. Was having quite a bit of fun with it, too - and then I ran into that fucking DLC in-game character salesman. Don't remember if I met him the first time I played the game (back in '09 or whenever), but I'm pretty sure if I loaded up my two-year old save right now, I'd be standing in front of him still. Pretty disgusting.
Even on meat grinders like operation locker I was still having trouble getting some of the unlocks. Simply because they required so many kills and I wasn't all that amazing. The grind is especially bad if you don't do well, since it's tied to what you do rather than just playing the game.
How the hell are you defining "long."
I just hate time-gated unlocks for games like this in general tbh.
the best part of asura's wrath's true ending DLC was that it was split into two, and since the game flopped you only get half of the true ending
DA:2 selling the backstory of the next game's antagonist is still fucking baffling. It's so bad, and DA:2 was so shitty, that they straight up bring in the protagonist of the second game to EXPLAIN WHO HE IS.
A lot of the weapons towards the end are gimmicky for 4. The weapon rebalance is completely different since the balance update. The starting and near starting weapons are still pretty much core, the only one that isn't is the AEK. But it's not that hard to unlock them.
Now the dlc weapons are on another plane of exsistance when it comes to unlocking. Because it forces you to use gimmicky gadgets or do very odd things with weapons to unlock them.
I've got 200 BF4 hours and I'm nowhere near having unlocked anything (that's with purchasing some shortcuts), and that's probably a bit above the amount of time the average casual player would stick in.
Also, side-grades and variety are still power. It's really obnoxious that some games dodge the p2w label (league the most infuriating) because of that claim.
Not to mention 3's vehicle unlocks were the worst vicious cycle ever. Don't have flares for the heli/jet yet? Good luck getting in one cause the guy that does is way more effective and won't die instantly. Can't get in one? Good luck getting the time in to unlock flares then. Repeat. For every useful vehicle unlock. If you didn't have it, you were useless in that vehicle compared to someone who did, which meant you couldn't get a chance to get it in the first place.
How in the world have you not unlocked everything with that many hours. I only have 120 and I've unlocked all of them plus the dlc weapons.
Progression systems in competitive games are absolute anus and offer no value other than an artificial sense of reward that is earned through time rather than achievement. I'm fine with it in games like Vermentide or Killing Floor but it absolutely turns me off from games I'd be interested in playing otherwise (Looking at you League). The gameplay loop satisfaction should be your reward for playing, there shouldn't be some constructed skinnerbox to keep you coming but that's what rakes in $$$ so
when I look at it now, the salesman they shove in your camp (in a previously empty spot I think?) reminds me of that treasure guy from Westworld with how obvious he is. Really breaks the immersion, you can't look at him without seeing the context of why he's there
On the other hand, DA:O also has a great example of good DLC with Shale, best character in the game if you ask me
It depends on when you play and what you play
You gotta do specific challenges, and use specific weapons/kits even when it may not be optimal. Also I doubt you have every attachment.
When it came to the BF shortcut packs, the vehicle ones for BF3 are the only ones I can think of that presented a genuine problem. Infantry weapons don't really mean dick, anyone can compete with anything as the TTK is pretty low. One of the best rifles in the game is the default unlock for the US team, and the RU equivalent isn't exactly a slouch. It takes a few rounds to get a decent all around rifle. Kit equipment is also quite quick to get. The infantry kit unlocks generally provide no real advantage and are just schmuck bait at their finest.
But vehicles? Fucking shit the flares are only scratching the surface. I only got flares for jets after multiple hours of trying to even take off because it's impossible to practice dogfights when you can even defend yourself effectively. Dealing with air vehicles as a tank is a royal pain in the ass until you get things like the laser designator or guided missiles and team members who'll co-operate with those. BF3 was a weird mess like that. At least 4 fixed initial unlocks like you said.
The Sims 4 My Pets Stuff is the worst of the worst. A literal DLC for DLC.
I know I haven't unlocked everything, but it's not impossible to unlock a vast majority of the attachments without putting in excessive time. Just by changing my kit up and switching out weapons occasionally I was tearing through the basic unlocks (which is generally where the instantly useful stuff is) in BF3, and thanks to the battlepack system in BF4 just throwing shit at me I have access to all kinds of shit that would have required time to unlock. I've never really seen an issue with the BF progression system, but that may be because I change my shit up constantly because I get bored of the same kit match after match.
Rather be a jack of all trades who does average but contributes than some of the tryhard fucks I've seen with 95% playtime as one class with one weapon. Shit that must be boring.
You mean the ending to the DLC we got now was only Part 1?! What the flying fuck Capcom? I thought Asura's Wrath was fine until the DLC hit, but this reeks of BS and I REALLY do hope they go back to that world and fix some shit.
there was supposed to be DLC where asura fights ryu and someone else from street fighter but it never released, it takes place after the real ending DLC
Wait you mean these little spin offs, or was there more planned story dlc?

Red Orchestra 2 had it in a pretty bullshit way where leveling up enough (Both classes and weapons) gave you bonuses like reduced sway, less suppression, extra ammo, weapon attachments, and weapons, etc. (I think eventually you unlocked the other side's guns too.)
Fully leveled up enough gave you a "hero" skin.
I remember one of them had either a hat or a helmet instead, making you the odd one out compared to the rest of your teammates (Germans TYPICALLY wear helmets, and Soviets wear ushankas) which resulted in large amounts of salt due to accidental teamkills.
I do nuh have majority of them because after a certain rank it gives you gold battlepacks nonstop.
