i've yet to see an LS swapped E36 in europe so +1 for uniqueness, although im not fond of the LS cuz everyone and their mom has an LS swapped car these days in america, i mean is there anything out there that has not been LS swapped?
to be completely honest, my neighbor has a e36 ls1, he lived 500 metres down my street.
But yeah, i'm kinda sick of spending a bazilion euros on ultra rare expensive bmw motorsport parts. Like I've got about 250hp (at the crank) in this car. And it's costing me a fortune.
Then there's the LS, also expensive because they aren't dirt cheap and everywhere here. a bare LS will cost you about 6k usd here.
This dude has a LM4 aluminium block, he's willing to sell it to me for 1750 euro. Included in the price is also an LS1 intake, water pump, alternator, oil pan, crank pulley. Not a bad deal if I say so myself. Any LS experts feel free to chime in some advice!
I'm hoping to get 350 hp (at the crank) and 400-450 in the near future.
Problem is, I got money for the LM4, but I'm too broke to get a T56 which is EXPENSIVE.
So yeah I totally get that LS is overdone, but I've never even seen a real LS up close (except for my neighbor , and I practically live on the track. ). They are really rare here
you can make 500 easily with just bolt ons and parts from other LS like LS3 heads, im not that much of an LS expert but i hear it from literally everyone i know in the states who has an LS car
So whats the one thing you shouldn't do to a high end high pressure shock absorber? WELD SHIT ON IT
So I have 2 front left shocks, the problem with this is that the bracket for the sway bar is facing the wrong way. I had 2 options
Risk death by welding it
Have the manufactuer put a new body on it. (At the cost of like 1500 bucks)
I CHOSE DEATH
https://i.imgur.com/8OjrpTH.png
Yeah this was a dumb fucking thing to do. But fuck paying 1500 for that god damn bracket to be repositioned. Weld looks horrible because I had to put MINIMAL heat into the thing, and not burn through. So I had to be really fucking fast. I did like a total of 6 tiny welds, each with 30min in between and constantly keeping the damper itself cool with water.
Yay im still alive
Thanks for your elaborate post. I'm sorry if I phrased it wrong, but I didn't mean I thought I'd make money from racing. I agree that it's expensive to arrive and drive, although, that sounds like something I'd love to try once or twice.
I'm a technical person when it comes to computers (hard- and software), so I definitely have some interest in technical things when it comes to engines and what not. I just don't have the space to do it, or parking space in general, so I guess that's holding me back too.
Maybe I'll once hit you up on the offer of checking out your car
Would have thought the McLaren would be a tad faster. I also hit about 230 on the straight. My car is PROBABLY a lot less comfy and a lot more scary tho
Even though, those sound like some great experiences. I've never even driven anything remotely supercar. Like, the quickest streetcar I've driven is probably the regular 1.8 turbo audi from my parents.
Anyway, small update. Installed the welded shocks back together with the sway bar. Put everything back together. Made the side quarter windows (the black edges are awful to make. All windows are 4mm hardend polycarbonate. (The old ones weren't hardend so they scratched REALLY FUCKIN FAST. Which ticked my self diagnosed OCD off the charts.

I'll probably make the bump strips all black. I think it really matches the white/black that's going on.
I was only allowed / able to drive 2-3 laps in the McLaren, so I couldn't get a feel for the car and I wasn't allowed to overtake or keep my own pace, sadly. First lap I nearly hit the car in front, 2nd lap I nearly ran it into the gravel, but still, hit 235km/h according to the car. If you want to see videos of both cases, PM me lmao
Yeah I forgot this great forum doesn't have PM's....
Oh I see... Steam works?

Well lads, it's almost done. Last thing I did was paint the trims and they came out pretty good for a rattlecan job.

Quite happy with how it looks. Things that still bother me
Sideskirt look a bit bare...might put on M3 sideskirts, but they don't add any functionality and only add weight.
Front fenders STILL look pretty bad, fitment is awful.

Ghetto mounts for the external shock reservoirs

Also very pleased with how my windows came out.
What's next?
Installing the radio communication
Installing a wiper (not a priority)
Getting the alignment done lol
Side mirrors might prove useful
Create a warning system for my motorsport abs.
So yeah, stick around!
if you crave speed and lack space or budget, look into karting. nothing feels faster than doing 0-60 in 2 seconds and 80mph down the straight with your ass half an inch off the track and then going flat out through a 90* corner and pulling 2.5g.
I do quite some gokarting, go about once a month. It'd definitely a nice way to race
Crap broke my diff bolt just shifting from 2nd to 3rd.

gotta take the entire diff out to drill out the rest of this sucka
Spending the whole day at Zandvoort. Feel like such a sheep between all the people who come here JUST for Max Verstappen
After a LONG week of trouble, trying to get the car ready in time for practice I just about made it only to run 4 laps before shit broke and I had to go home.
The good news is that I at least got to drive it see what it does, the bad news is that it needs A LOT of work. The handling is a fucking bitch, got loads of work on that, also the exhaust mount broke off again (you can hear it ticking after the last corner)
In the end, of the 4 laps I did they were awfully slow. Oh well at least I know where to go from here. Video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TugGiu2w6Lg
may be a dumb question but any reason for not rev matching downshifts?
also to add ive never really done circuit driving but since last year started to autocross semi regularly. heres one of my better runs
https://youtu.be/boV83eXIFTs
No downshifts because they produce insane bangs, and I knew the exhaust was mounted so so,....., non-excuse reason being I hadn't driven for a long ass time and I'm still p bad at it.
@Strontboer forgive my ignorance if this has already been mentioned elsewhere, but what kind of racing do you do in your car? Eg do you only do casual track days or is there some kind of competition which you enter your car into?
I ask because yeah although I imagine it’s most likely to be just track days, there are both series production and improved production races which happen here in Australia. As well as spec series races of course, such as a Toyota 86 Championship. Not sure how popular those kinds of things are in Europe. Here they aren’t as popular as the [V8] Supercars or GT racing, but they can have large grids. There’s this insane video of an improved production race that happened recently at Mount Panorama
https://youtu.be/BnQP95aVv04
Hehe yeah I know that race, absolutely insane.
I do have my racing licence and in 2015 and 2016 I raced in the DNRT Toer and DNRT Sport racing series. For example this race, qualified good, then fell down to 16th place and finished 2nd.

I was trying to figure out what the fuck dragcross was, until I watched the video. Seems like a clever twist on autocross to say the least.
Last night I took my first podium at K1 Speed's (Wilmington MA) monthly Challenge GP! Last visit I came in dead last and was slow, this visit I closed the gap considerably in quali. There was enough people for 2 heats/brackets, and of course I was put in the smaller/slower heat. But that did mean I started 2nd, and even finally got to do a grid start (last visit was rolling start for some reason). I was all over 1st's ass, and even had a few potential passes lined up. Unfortunately, my one really good opening ended up with him closing the door on me and tapping me in to the wall. That left me with too far a gap to have another chance, and was on the last lap or 2nd to last lap anyway.

Suspension is MEH, so why not create GTR lower control arm setup.
https://i.imgur.com/md0tYHF.png
there will replace these stock ones
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223218/016ddc83-ab9c-43d0-8363-296957126929/image.png
There will be a tubular unibal link drom where the bmw lolipop is usually mounted. It will probably get a lot more clear when I finish the other parts
Took the green E36 out for one last drive...although it was being pulled by a forklift lol.
Cleaned it as someone wanted to take a look at it. I sold it today. Sad to see it go, but happy that it will return to the track once again.
https://i.imgur.com/sY52Ynb.png
https://i.imgur.com/PMbA1Ax.png
God bless you magnificent green bastard.
Why did you sell it?
As much as I'd love to defend owning 2 race cars., my GF seems to think otherwise.
But for real, the engine was broken and my current car is WAY faster. Not only that but my current car is built so much cleaner and nicer that I don't see myself doing anything with it. And I just felt like moving on you know?
More work on the lower control arms

These will allow me to adjust the roll centre and adjust the track width without creating wheel scrub problems
So yeah, I sold the green car right?
Guess again, this asshole canceled the sale because he couldn't figure out his finances.
He even made a down-payment on the thing. Which I'm keeping btw.
Some fucking people.....
So I was making the GTR arms when someone offerted a kit for much cheaper then I could make one myself.
So I bought a prefab set.

At least I can focus on other things now!
SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIENDS

I know I talked about it a lot...but after a long wait...it's finaly here
5.3 LS finaly arrived!
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223218/6dcce019-d205-474b-8a82-2895d554f6ad/image.png
Came with a bunch of shit, LS1 intake, fuel rails injectors, throttlebody, waterpump, alternator, brackets n shit. also a 5.3 truck harness n ecu.
https://i.imgur.com/g7CEW5a.jpg
Made a start on my custom front subframe.
Goal of this is to make a unibal mount, and while doing so place the point higher up in the car, or in the picture lower into the subframe. This is to correct the roll-centre.

It's about time I finish this fucking thing!
