• Far Cry 2 details vs Far Cry 5 [Crowbcat]

This thread convinced me to finally give Far Cry 2 a shot, because a game that has it's fanbase this torn has to have something special.
Far Cry 2 has a lot of neat features and amazing polish slapped onto a whole bunch of fuck-all to do and bad mission design.
Oh great, another one sided comparison by Crowbcat where it’s always how one game has a certain detail better than another even though the other game has other details.
Oh, and you have to mess with the config-file to get it to actually run in 1920x1080, even though it's an option in the menu. The option just doesn't work, and reverts to 1600x900 instantly. Most of the cool shit Far Cry 2 has to offer can be experienced in about an hour of gameplay if you know what's actually good in the game, and the rest is just... Infinitely spawning enemies never leaving you alone while you're trekking halfway across the fairly large map because the missions are super spread out to pad game time, so it doesn't feel like the game's as short and lacking in content as it really is.
I absolutely love Far Cry 2. Compared to the newer games in the series it feels more like a survival game. The gun degradation imo is a neat feature as it punishes you for running out of ammo in your freshly bought weapons by forcing you to pick up rusted, unreliable guns from your enemies. Rusty guns make you fight more passively as you don't know when they will jam, and you don't want to stand in front of an enemy when it does. The malaria system I can't really defend, but it's not as unbearable as most people make it seem. At worst it forces you to do a short delivery mission every 5-6 hours to get pills. Keeping your character symptom-free also improves your stamina when you sprint and swim, so there are benefits to keeping your supply stocked up. Also to the people who keep complaining about the guard posts - you're in a country at war, do you expect to just be able to take a calm Sunday drive through the main roads? If you want to get to a location without dealing with guard posts then you have to take alternative paths, like going off-road or taking a boat and travelling down the river instead.
And I can dig that, it sounds like it's a really interesting experience. Games that experiment with some of the features I'm reading about really endear me, I can easily look past if it's not as conventionally 'fun' as some other games.
Oh man this video reminded me how much of a love-hate relationship I have with FC2. It did so many things so well, but the malaria and constant barrages of respawning enemies really took a lot away from the game. I never fully completed it, but in the end I still feel like I got a much better experience out of it than FC3 and FC4 because while those were better in some ways they were by far not as memorable as this brown-stained punishing diamond.
What tons of oppertunities? I've never played a far cry game before 5 but most of the time it just felt like "go there kill baddies and/or destroy baddies stuff until the baddies fetch you" (which, IMO, didn't really make much sense)
You have tons of landmarks across the map, like prepper stashes, random liberation events, and other side activities and places to check out for background lore. Fc2 is like fc5, if every quest was driving from one region to the other to kill a handful of badguys, and go all the way back for your reward.
i just opened up far cry 2 and it works in 1440p just fine i think the issue is just you but also yeah damn this game is just as fucking terrible and ugly as i remember it. all the small details in the world couldn't save it. far cry 5 is objectively leagues ahead of 2, this comparison is dumb as bricks
It was common enough for me to find dozens of people with the same issues earlier today when I looked up why the hell it fired up in 900p.
You're actually super wrong about this. You always got animations relevant to the injury that put you in critical health: Getting shot -> extracting bullets Fall damage -> re-setting dislocated arms/legs hurt in fall Fire damage -> patting out fires on your clothes Grenades, explosives -> pulling out various pieces of shrapnel from your body etc. The classic Deadly Africanized Water video makes it seem like it's random because there's no critcal healing animation for drowning, so it just does random animations. Also! The critical health animations only happen on your last bar of health, or if you're out of healling syrettes. I can't speak for you, but they're a real mood setter for me, especially when it's a desperate fight. Some amazing human condition shit right there.
Stuff like mass destruction can still be pretty hard to pull off, but that ends up being a matter of tech and programming than anything Dynamic weather and night cycles were impressive enough to brag about in 2005, long before FC2 came into the picture. Now it's a feature that's added without even telling anyone, and in almost every type of game out there.
No you don't. FarCry 5's main story structure is, clear out this outpost, collect the prepper stash, save the civilian or do a mission. The side quests are far better than the main quests because the MQs are literally railroad bullshit that remove all player choice which crashes straight into the game's open world philosophy. And then there's the fact you have collection quests. Oh and Prepper stash which, outside of a few notable exceptions, are just 'find the key, remove the water, bobs your uncle fuck you get some thousand dollars'. Outside of MQSide Quests, the other ones are just run of the mill boring as fuck bullshit such as collect this thing, shoot this thing, complete the time challenge. IN Far Cry 2, you not only could approach the mission from any angle, especially due to the wide variety of weapons by late game but you also could complete secondary objectives with your Best Buddy that would garner you more cash and actually affect the story later on, FYI. However, against FC2 were the Gunrunning and Malaria missions which were all the same, but they at least fit into the core themes of the game's plot whether it was the gunrunning to get arms for the two sides or the helping of civilians get out of the war torn nation. Also, I'm done with this, 'core gamplay was ass' argument because it wasn't. The coregameplay itself, excepting the gun degredation, is the exact same as FarCry 3 to 5 but with respawning outposts which; by the by, you can fucking enable in FarCry 5 due to player demand. That's right, Outposts can now be respawned because players were getting bored.
Yu got multiple people who said it was total ass and boring as fuck, reviews saying the same exact thing, and bad sales. Fc2 was a shit game with neat details, thats it. Respawning outposts were a issue because the game made you drive through them all the fucking time with the horrid main mission placements. To this day i still have no idea what the story in 2 was, something about your a merc that got malaria in 5 minutes of being in africa and theres a super bad weapons dealer selling weapons. What a story, at least 3-5 have neat characters who talk to you and have fun sidequests. Btw that "variety of guns" is literally all hitscans that you very rarely deviate from the highest tier like every farcry since 2. And "you can tackle from any angle" thats been a farcry staple since 1, 5 gives you more ways to tackle than 2 ever tried thanks to the buddy system and gadgets like ziplines and the grappling hook. Its fun sneaking around a compound and have your bowsman sit at a perch above it, and use him to pick off targets while snapping their buddie's neck. Its fine you didn't like 5 (shit the worst part is the main quest but ill still take that over fc2's main quests any day) but to call it bad and then say 2 is much better is some extreme rose tinting considering the massive slog that is 2.
I never even said one was better than the other, your grabbing implications because I'm highly critical of 5 which is the 3rd installment by Ubisoft and they're still pulling off mistakes from 2 and seemingly getting praise for it now.
It's the 5th installment, funnily enough. You forgot to count Far Cry 2 and Primal.
The tech is there. It has been there since forever, the engine started as a custom CryEngine fork. The spreading fire stuff is still there after all, just toned down, which makes sense considering the environment is less dry than Africa.
Yeah there's the Clutch Nixon missions, and prepper stashes. But most other side missions involves you going somewhere and either catching or killing it. There's hunting and fishing too, which is still going someplace and killing it (and it was why I got so OP). I unfortunately couldn't remember most of the lore that I got from the prepper stashes apart from "we decided to move out to some other country"
Third! Rising Storm 2 Vietnam also did it
When I reload my rocket launchers I want the protagonist to take his fat hands and shove the rocket into the back of the tube
Don't even talk to me if you don't have to first assemble the gunpower booster charge to the rear of the rocket and the wind-effects apply backwards to the rocket.
Far Cry 2 may be a frustrating experience, but at least it's not the banal cookie cutter bore of Far Cry 5. Coop only barely saved that game for me. I'll take a clunky game that has a bit of heart, honestly.
People are praising it because it focuses on the good and fun things of the farcry series. You're the one trying to act like 2 did a lot of things better, when it was actually tedious and boring as hell for most people.
Yes let's just ignore the "other majority" who thinks otherwise. https://i.imgur.com/0hZq5Zu.png Even if it was an even split of 50/50 people loving and hating this game, it would still mean that it's a game worth trying. If a game is shit and everybody agrees that it's shit, there would be no threads like this, no discussion like this, because nobody would defend it. If any game starts forum-dividing shit-storms 10 years after it's been released, it's a game worthy of note in my book.
Except look at people saying playing it now is a slog and aged horribly. I can go back to hl1 any day because its still got great pacing and gameplay. I can even go back to fc1 and the numerous xbox games easily and have loads of fun. 2 was a total bore when i first got it, and got worse when i played it later. It felt like 3 with worse mechanics and pacing.
I honestly don't know where you get your facts from. https://i.imgur.com/kz3TnIU.png Most people who play it now don't say that, and no walls of text that you write will change reality.
Nice one, read the thread.
Did people on this thread not stock up at gun shops Only one person said they did
Yes because people on a forum that's biased (and fairly) against Crowbcat's videos that will go to the thread of one of his videos and be contrarians out of spite are a much more true representation of gaming's world opinion on the game than years of steam reviews.
