i know how to spot an idiot cull from a mile away. never again will i get caught in such a trap!
you're an asshole
Are you planning on making a thread about how these new subforums are going to work? There seems to be a lot up in the air right now, a lot of undrawn lines.
I have a question on this matter - from what it appears both Hezzy and craptasket said the posting of the class threads in GGD were fine (TF2 and the DOTA ones in particular), so is it really spam in that regard? Any other time I would say so, but with them expresselly being given permission to post, is a perma the appropriate response?
As a serious question. What type of threads do you actually want us to post? Right now I don't know if a thread I make will be too big (is talking about a film too big, for example) or if it'll be too small and therefore spam (like posting about something funny that happened in a game).
I really hope you're taking the piss because in that list of people perma'd is a LOT of high-profile posters with good track records.
>Intends for forum to be a "Reddit-like experience"
>Bans user for posting exactly as imagined
>Oh boy
Jokes aside though, as Sagan pointed out, were all users really worthy of being perma'd if several the community manager himself approved the content? This is an honest question seeing as several of those banned users were key members of this forum.
A dark day for fp

I understand the desire to stop stagnation but the number one thing that would cause stagnation is a mass banning of prolific posters oh wait?
It's like when you're binge watching a series and there is one end of season episode where loads of major characters die/move away and its really sad then next season there are loads of new characters who you're not quite sure you like yet (rust posters tentatively migrating into other boards)
Creating any thread is fine if the reason isn't malicious.
Best ass eating techniques?
How is this thread malicious?
It's okay unbanning has been added back. Right?
People overreacted and spammed instead of giving the new changes a try for a while but surely all those users haven't really been permanently banned.
I think this is a great opportunity to reinstate the refugee camp. @garry is this a possibility in the near future?
yo gazza if you want the forum to be like reddit can we start talking about how much we hate black people??? or what. do we get a rick and morty section
Okay so, now that you've made your point, please unban all my friends. Pretty please?
Refugee camp confirmed not returning but I really hope all those people get their bans reduced.
They're gone.
gmf wouldn't be the same without bird man
I feel like this is doubling down on childishness in response to childishness. I don't think these people should have been completely permanently banned instead of anything from a dayban to a weekban, at most.
From what I remember being mentioned before, permabans on here are actually perm, the unban function doesn't work on them.
Ok sure you got rid of the people spamming threads, but what about the people who literally were posting what was suggested or someone who made a completely normal thread?
This sucks, a bunch of my friends are now banned forever for posting a single joke thread. Outside of these circumstances that might be a week ban at most
Just gonna go ahead and repost this here seeing as the overlord is actually reading this thread
Yeah I sure as don't feel very incentivized to branch out into a bunch of new threads nor make new threads of my own. If anything I just feel way less incentive to be anywhere near somewhere like the games forum because why the hell even bother?
I've been playing an assload of War Thunder lately but I haven't really done anything in it that would ever warrant a whole thread of its own, but I have done a bunch of stuff that might warrant discussion in a megathread, which is what megathreads are really good at. I've been having a lot of trouble with German aircraft cannons and they feel incredibly anemic to me. That's something worth some general discussion. That is not something worth creating an discussion thread for
I played an incredibly bad custom map in Rising Storm 2 recently. That's something worth talking about in a general thread, that is not something worth creating an entire thread for
I went full tryhard on Red Orchestra 2's Bridges of Druzhina a few weeks ago to see just how much difference one squad leader can make in that twisted hellscape of a map. That's something worth talking about in a general thread, that is not something worth creating an entire thread for
I carried the hell out of my team in War Thunder on a round of airfield domination purely by being such an active capper, that's something worth talking about in a general thread, that is not something worth creating an entire thread for
I herded a leviathan into the safe shallows in Subnautica using the Seamoth electrical defense, that's something worth talking about in a general thread, that is not something worth creating an entire thread for
I revisited an old Dwarf Fortress and was three kinds of unholy confused just what the hell was even happening and what the fuck I was even thinking when I originally made it, that's something worth talking about in a general thread, that is not something worth creating an entire thread for
I gave SS13 a try and spent the round as a tourist doing my best Twoflower impression, that's something worth talking about in a general thread, that is not something worth creating an entire thread for
I was a regular in the Space Engineers thread for a a long time and I never did a single thing that would warrant its own thread. It was just random shit I built and experimented with and general discussion of the state of the game
I could keep going on and on and on and on like this
I wouldn't even create a thread for these things on reddit, which is run entirely on bullshit just like that. There's nowhere near enough to any of these things to really warrant it. It's just some small things that happened. That's what general threads are good for. The small things that happened and the idle discussion of a game
If anything I think axing megathreads is a good way to promote even less activity. FP has a reasonably large userbase but it's not exactly huge and it doesn't really have a huge population of people playing any of the examples I've listed here. Certainly not enough to warrant individual subforums for each one and definitely not enough that there's going to be a constant flow of small threads about them, and restricting games discussion to just singular, focused threads isn't exactly a good way to promote an active community. The small stuff and having a place to just talk about the small stuff is the lifeblood of a community
I'm all over the place on this forum. I'm not exactly an active poster, but I am always lurking all over the place, and I followed a lot of megathreads. Axing them hasn't really made me feel like I should branch out more, it mostly makes me feel like there's a lot less for me here, and I suspect that's going to be the much more common feeling. If people weren't already branching out into the rest of the forum, maybe it's not because of megathreads. Maybe it's just because the rest of the forum just didn't have anything that caught their interests, or they didn't really feel as though they had anything to contribute elsewhere
I'm not really a big car person. Why would I visit the car subforum? I don't play DOTA. I don't play CS. I don't play Overwatch, or Mario, or Fortnite, or PUBG, or GTA. I don't have anything to contribute to a Half-Life subforum. I don't have anything to contribute to a TF2 subforum
Most of my interests were being kept afloat on this forum in general threads, smaller stuff. I honestly have no idea where the incentive for me to contribute more elsewhere if those threads are gone
And with general threads being ousted, I have no idea how promoting new interests is supposed to work. If I was to go make a thread for something like, say, Natural Selection 2, what the hell kind of thread is it supposed to be if not a general thread serving as an introduction and hub for discussion?
What if I wanted to introduce FP to something like Depth? Should that be accomplished by a single 'let's play!' thread and then all subsequent discussion should be restricted to a bunch of smaller threads buried under the mountain of other smaller threads clogging up the games forum?
I think axing megathreads is a terrible idea, basically
Understandable completely, but in the case of the class threads in GGD they weren't inherently malicious. They were given permission to be posted and would in theory serve their purpose, and were within the rules at the time. So its just strange that they would be labeled spam and given a perma if they don't actually quite fit that label within the time frame of them being posted. If a megathread isn't allowed, then isn't the alternative for discussing the classes their own individual threads? In the case of dota, its a bit of a silly case because there are so many classes, but it still fits under what was allowed.
Best ones were the bans on threads Hezzy explicitly said to make.
but then will there be other ways of appealing permabans? Or will we reduce the penalties for creating an alt at some point later? I feel like giving people permabans so easily is incompatible with a no appeals system because it discards the possibility of users learning from mistakes
maybe we can arrange for garry to get deported to some eastern european microstate (a rust server perhaps?) where he can become dictator and act out his authoritarian fantasies. then make maxofs2d the new administrator
I assume you can PM a mod or ask in the discord or something? I don't know
