I hope so. I used to play on a game where staff would permaban people pretty often. Permabans there would act as a way to force a user to make an appeal so they can discuss with staff why they were banned, understand what rules were broken, and make sure it won't happen again. Once that's done they're lifted. I can understand repeated bans or problematic posters being perma'd without appeal, but we're talking people who followed Hezzy's instructions here. So you follow them, and are gone gone?
Good thing I didn't post these individual Retro Game threads in GD like I originally intended.
Banning people for making threads the Community Manager specifically said to is silly. But this whole update is silly IMO. And honestly, considering the overall consensus on this update, banning anyone who criticises it isn't going to help.
So what we gonna call this event on wikipunch? phygon gone too dang
How do you determine if the reason is malicious if you give the user a permaban and there is no appeal process? I mean obvious spam is one thing but more often than not people are ignorant, not malicious when they make a poor posting decision. Please reconsider reinstating the refugee camp.
Banageddon?
I can some lighter bans bans for spam because yeah, those were definitely pretty spammy threads, but not all of them were pure spam, some of them had a pretty good point and a lot of them wound up made entirely because of piss poor communication across the board
I never got the point of these so-called "idiot culls" the staff does every so often. Permaban a bunch of members over something petty to accomplish... what, exactly? To reuse a phrase from the Tudd fiasco, is it just "wily trollface japes"? Is it just because someone's in a bad mood? I honestly don't get it.
"The great filter" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Filter
Can't even really call this an idiot cull, just a cull.
But that implies we were filtering out stuff that hurt the forum! What has Phygon and Mort ever done to hurt us?
That's how it's worked for a long time here. Some of the times it's been for the better, some not so much. You can usually tell though - if the community is split in a love/hate camp, the change is probably good (past experience shows anyway). If everyone hates it... Quacks like a duck.
in the context of fermi paradox a great filter is a thing which potentially wipes out a civilisation
Yeah I don't understand what possible purpose these bans serve, it's for a relatively minor offense. All it accomplishes is making us all extremely angry for losing friends and posters, and it removes voices from the discussion here on FP. I guess it must be cathartic to perma all those people but that's not very responsible. You're demonstrating to us that we don't matter at all and that kind of attitude is toxic to a community when it comes from higher up.
Banana Republic
yeah, why did the spy and medic threads get permas when the "community manager" said that they should be made? this whole dismantling of megathreads situation is not well thought out, and none of the arguments for it are good or even bring up any actual issues that anyone in a megathread has ever had. it's just being used as an excuse to get rid of anyone who disagrees for any reason forever, or at least that's what's conveyed by banning people like phygon. this is a microcosm of facepunch; it's yet another bad and illogical decision amidst all the others, e.g., moving to a literally incomplete forum that doesn't even have report functionality, or the porn thread road bump where hezzy tried to drag everyone into his world despite garry and the mod team not being on board.
Remember - no Megathreads.
Solution: use oify for everything
lmao did garry actually just perma people like butthurter i was liking newpunch at first but the way its been handled and the way our feedback has been heeded has been unsatisfying at best.
Oh yeah, it IS amazing all right. Amazing how fucked up everything is.
So we're supposed to use the subscribe feature, but threads have a shorter life span now. How does that make any sense?
Creating spam threads to make a point isn't feedback. It's childish, malicious compliance.
I believe that is a stretch on malicious. Subversive maybe at worst.
You're completely correct, but permabanning them was also an unproductive act of catharsis that serves no purpose at all. Even a month would have been fine but a perma is just crazy, imo
The OP admitted on discord that he made the thread because he thought the change was dumb.
And I'm sure that's what they thought too when they were enjoying making all those dumb threads.
But is it really deserving of an unappealable permaban? I mean considering the circumstances, long time posters, being told by Hezzy it was ok?
like the medic and spy threads that hezzy told them to make?
Is there no way for them to appeal their bans?
Appeal function is missing. As is the ability to report posts.
