yeah this is terrible. fix this shit please, it was pretty good before.
I know a lot of people have concerns about the forums. Why not come onto stream and chat with me? https://www.twitch.tv/hezzyuk
I don't think that deserves a permaban for some long-standing members who were being ignored otherwise who did a simple protest move that is easy to fix. I feel like I'm not being respected as a person who has been here for a decade. Honestly I'm afraid to start a new topic now, what if the mods think my topic isn't good enough and I get permabanned? Topics can't be too general or they go away, but if they're too specific I can get permabanned. What is the rule?
Banning megathreads could actually kill a lot of communities with large userbases so I dont see how banning it would help our already low userbase
I'm also not really happy with the whole "tone" of the forum these last 2 days. Lots of sweeping changes and near complete dismissal of concern or criticism. Mods are catching hell for things they probably didn't have a say in. Veteran posters are getting perma'd for a onetime stunt. (That I think proved their dismissed points TBH) None of this is a good look, especially not to new people. I'm not trying to shit on the FP team's parade, the new forums are great and can only improve from here, issues are being fixed, all is well on the technical front. But we're in a paradigm shift here in the way the forum is run and the way we're expected to post, without any clear expectations laid out. If garry is going to stick to his guns we need that at the very least.
About half of the banned have been in Discord over the past 12-14 hours, since this whole shitshow began. Only a couple actually appealed in even the vaguest way. Lots shouted for hours how unfair it was that they were banned for spamming the forum when other people were spamming & a bad rule had been incorrectly specified & some forums had moved so that makes it okay really. You have made a grand argument (Newpunch->...Reddit) based upon the moaning and speculation that goes back and forth in this thread & the other complaint thread. When garry doesn't talk to you, you talk to each other, and continually amp and hype up your own fears, reassuring each other that no, you're not paranoid, the worst REALLY IS about to happen. That's how we got from "we are discouraging megathreads" & (Hezzy macro'ing every megathread with a template message - a bit poor form!), to users overnight telling each other megathreads were banned, to it being okay to make one line threads with the title "this forum sucks donkey dick" multiple times in {Meta} because OMG THE RULES HAVE GONE INSANE, to spamming the new subforums with shitposting and then these users being surprised, shocked, horrified to find themselves banned when garry got into work the next day. If people just calmed the fuck down and waited a few days shit would have been fixed. Much. Ado. About. Nothing. So much melodrama. It's incredible.
Facepunch has unfortunately never been welcoming to newcomers. A ban for posting in the wrong section? It's basically 'you broke a small rule, don't come back for three days', at which point they're probably not going to come back.
I think we're exponentially better about it now and for the last couple years than when we joined. My first account was from 2007, I remember smartness, I remember the mods handing out bans left and right all day over petty shit. It certainly hasn't been like that in years
so can i filter out subforms i don't give a shit about or nah
the latest changes are asinine, thread for semi popular flavor of the month games getting an entire subforum is dumb. FC5's thread has maybe 60 posts in a day, but hezzy came in and said: Fair warning, I am going to be closing this thread when I wake up tomorrow. Feel free to create threads on the topics you're discussing in here. We're trying to encourage people to spread out more, be liberal with the thread creation button. Don't group everything into one thread! Theres not even close to enough activity to even do that unless you make a megathread to bring all of them together. I don't even know how nearly any game can have this work without a megathread. So people tried to show it wont work by copying exactly what reddit does and that made him upset and permad. Its a dumb idea and newpunch was much better without it.
So what exactly is the status on megathreads? Are they still OK or are the getting shitcanned? I've read the 10+ new pages here but I don't think anyone has a clear answer as to whether or not megathreads have to go. I can understand wanting new members to post new threads as a way of bumping up our member count, but don't eliminate the megathreads and displace the veterans. Maybe we could encourage new posters to make new threads first before hopping into the megathreads? Sort of like an introduction to the forum so that they can get a feel for the users and the community and not have to go in blind into a big scary megathread.
I don't mind the idea of subforums. I prefer megathreads but if the game is popular and active enough I can see the reason for a subforum. My issue comes from that a lot of games here aren't popular enough for a subforum. Why far cry of all games? There's literally only two active threads on there and I'm pretty sure in the coming months it's going to die out. Nintendo and TF2 make sense because there's daily content and a lot of it. Go by brand popularity but having a subforum for each game is gonna make it look dead by comparison.
Facepunch will never be like Reddit. Facepunch should never be like Reddit. What is being implemented here fundementally goes against the grain of how the Facepunch community has managed to organise itself and wishes to continue to operate. Trying to force the generation of content won't create new content. It seems that you are trying to grow the community at the expense of the existing one, but the potential for community growth is already small as dedicated forums like these begin to lose out to Reddit, Discord, etc. Changes need to be made gradually over time, with proper consultation from the community (a Discord voice channel with 10 people doesn't count). Right now it seems as if one person suggests something, a member of the management team goes "o yeah thats a cool idea" and it is implemented without much thought regarding whether it is required, how the community will respond, and how the success is to be gauged.
Instead of a Far Cry subforum that won't last after the "talk" over Fry Cry 5 has died down, wouldn't it make more sense to have a Ubisoft sub forum? Same thing with the Mario sub-forum, that just seems so specific.
Like I've said before, it should just be a tagging system, with most popular tags being listed at the top of the page. Half Life, TF2, DOTA, Steam all should be tagged as valve but they're disconnected from one another Half Life, GTA, Overwatch, Doom should all be tagged as shooter then you can just filter out shit you'll never want to see and directly see what you want.
I still don’t even understand the logic of this. Like I can go away from the site for days and comeback to maybe 300 posts in any particular thread. In what possible universe is that even remotely on the scale of activity that a single subreddit will have. We don’t have the 50k users who will need a Far Cry subsection, let alone a few hundred. This isn’t some unknown factor, this isn’t something that is an untested idea. How popular do they think FP is? Like a casual browsing of the forums would show that even the most popular bordering on chat thread takes weeks to even cross a thousand posts at the most active times (E.G the tf2 general chat thread when an update actually comes out)
It would make more sense to have subforums by brands than games themselves, with exceptions being made for huge games like TF2
i know people are mad about all this but i think having news node threads appear on sensationalist headlines is kind of neat
They got some things right, I think the reason why there's an uproar is because they haven't organized the new system yet and swept the old one out from everyones feet and now they don't even know what to do on the forums.
I post in NN, SH, PD and Videos I really would rather not have news of the latest dumb video game in SH. I'll go to NN for that.
All the threads being created was shitposting, but with a cause, with good intentions. Folks were upset their favorite site, that they've used for a decade or more, would become much harder to use and undergo a whole shift in how you use it. It was a form of protest. All those permabans may make the site noticeably more slow, the TF2 section especially. If the switch is still going, please try to optimize the site so all the loading from all of the new threads is less annoying.
I think it'll be a lot less neat once the news bots actually start posting again. SH will end up more news bot that anything else, and the quality and variety of their articles aren't always the best. Whilst I enjoyed browsing the news node from time to time, I would only ever sift through which articles to read, there's too much junk otherwise.
oh are the news bots not working yet? nvm then that's gonna end badly lol
Personally I kinda like NN being in SH too but it's true that NN usually gets flooded. With a filter this wouldn't necessarily be a problem though, and there could be other ways to ensure bots post less trash when they get reimplemented.
So now I have to filter NN out, but then I won't be able to see NN at all... what did any of this solve for me? How does this improve it?
These forums aren't big enough for filters. Opening sections in separate tabs is the filter
So this thread got derailed.
