I also found the subforums to be a nice filter away from general games. I haven't cared about TF2 or other Valve games in a long time, now it's like everything is there multiple times, all of them with tags
The profile change is pretty fun and a neat.
But showing subforum threads in the parent forum is a bit cluttering. It feels like half the threads got pushed off to the second and third pages for no reason.
The FP community simply isn't big enough for a reddit-style content aggregation. And even if it was, I already have reddit for that.
This change is baffling to me. Why would you possibly think that the site could handle every game having a subforum? Like, it just kills discussion without active users.
There are more people online in the Overwatch Subreddit right now than on all of FP. Probably more than the peak users today.
Another xpost from TF2GC
And clogging up the forum with useless shit makes it harder to find good, interesting things you wouldn't have found otherwise. The same supposed negative of megathreads/general chats.
if we're just gonna flood the "feed" with shitloads of subforums for topics as small/slow as Mario why not just do redditpunch again so we can make the appropriate subforums ourselves
If we're really to go with this whole subforums for specific video games and such, we need to start from a more general point .e.g fps, rpgs, tactical etc before going more specific, then we can properly gage how many of these topics deserve their own personal subforum
I completely fail to see the point of killing off megathreads
I'm not sure about you but I would much rather have 1 thread that encompasses several different games at once. Megathreads are their own community and most of the discussion that goes on in them absolutely does not warrant making separate threads for. Why would I bother making a new thread asking a question about Morrowind when I could just ask in the TES megathread and not create a clusterfuck of 20+ individual topics?
I understand where Hezzy & Garry are coming from, and I think it's great they want to give people more exposure by creating unique threads. However, some games really only need a single megathread. Like I said before, this isn't Reddit. The community isn't big enough to support having a unique thread for every topic. The chat threads were a great place to bring up any topic you wanted since they moved kinda slow depending on the game.
When it comes to community created content like maps an models, I wouldn't mind seeing the "RELEASES" section make a return alongside keeping the WIP thread. That way the forums won't be spammed with WIP posts while allowing users to show off the finished product in their own thread.
I think a lot of these subforums are going to end up like hezzy's infamous Minecraft subforum, a dead forum with very little discussion outside a few "general" threads.
The funny thing to me is, with most of the changes on Newpunch (subscribing, better keeping track of where you left reading etc.) Newpunch is even better at managing Megathreads then FP was.
Personally I love megathreads, there sure are a handful one could split but most of them aren't worth splitting. It is always nice to come back and read up on them.
Christ, the last thing you need is to drive away the optimistic users who were willing to give NewPunch a chance. If the next thing you're going to say to defend this change is "lol then leave and find another forum," there isn't going to be a forum that's like Facepunch for me. The reason I chose Facepunch over other forums like Reddit was because it didn't feel messy and disorganized, it wasn't cesspool of memes, had actual discussions that were well moderated (usually). It's a real kick to the shins for those in the FP who got comfortable or trying to get comfortable with NewPunch because you don't want the community to run this way, when really it's the way we felt most comfortable with. I was ready to give NewPunch a chance because it at least wasn't LabPunch, and I'm still going to stick around this forum hoping for good change, but I'm still disappointed at the decisions that are being made at the community's expense.
Almost like they're using threads as threads and not chatroom channels.
Are the 16x16 avatars coming back too?
Remember, general threads aren't allowed anymore. So instead you get no posting at all.
How many threads is a Far Cry, Mario, Fortnite, and GTA subforum really going to have in them?
I suggest removing subforum-related threads from their pertinent "main" section, ie TF2 threads will only be in the TF2 subforum, rather than in both Games and TF2
And all the threads from the big subforums, like the TF2 and Overwatch ones, could drown out smaller threads, even bigger threads like the Fallout one that don't get turned into subforums.
this would be a huge improvement
Pretty much this. It has enough threads to deserve a subforum, but if i don't give a fuck about TF2, then i don't want to see a dozen threads cluttering up a page.
When you start tearing apart some of the megathreads I think its time for you to stop. This isn't reddit, and it never will be. It's a very small site that will probably not get much bigger.
Right because Overwatch totally needs a thread for each fucking event which will get 20 posts and forgotten about
That's what threads are meant for, a single conversation.
The entire first page of GD is nothing but subforum threads rn lmao
Seeing LMAO pics in fast threads is making me nostalgic
It only got put in General Discussion a few months ago.
to further encourage discussion, we're going to delete this update thread and all future update threads and create seperate threads for each patch note. thanks for using facepunch
