The main reason why I started posting on FP in the first place was the sense of community the threads had. Yes the threads were about a game or a topic or whatever, but there were discussions about other stuff too. Not all of it was relevant to the topic at hand, but it helped to create a unique atmosphere for the thread. Its like a school club. When you first join the club you usually go there for the content, you go there cause you wanna play video games or talk about comics. Eventually you start making friends and become a regular. You go there for the club and the people and how it interacts with the activity.
That's what megathreads are to me. A club where I can go and hang out and talk about shit with other people who want to talk about the same shit. A place where I can go and talk about a game and not be just another poster, I'm recognized and people go "hey its you". By getting rid of the megathreads and limiting everything to 20+ individual threads, you're splitting up the community and focusing entirely on the content. The club gets disbanded and all the regulars have no place to go to hang out.
I can understand why someone wouldn't want to join a megathread. Maybe they just want to ask a single question and then leave once they get the answer. In that case, making a single thread for that would be fine. But when you fragment everything like that, you break up the band and are left with 20+ threads that last 5 minutes, get 10 posts and then are dead and gone. Megathreads kept all that shit in one place. They served to organize things.
I can see both sides of the argument. On one hand, getting rid of the megathreads lets people quickly ask specific questions or talk about very specific things and makes the forums more inclusive, but in the other hand without the megathreads we're going to wind up with endless amounts of quick threads that die too soon and the sense of community is gone.
Maybe we can find a middle ground somehow? Keep the general discussions but still encourage people to make specific threads? I don't really know how it would work and if I'm completely honest I don't see how it could, but it just sucks to know that these communities I've spent years with are just being swept under the rug.
I get the sentiment but I doubt the majority of people in GD want Fast Threads quality posts everywhere. I know I personally don't, if I want to see shitposts/low-quality then I'll go to Fast Threads.
Fast Threads but for all of facepunch
Now those separate "clubs" get entire sub-forums instead of one single thread. I don't see how that hurts anything. Topics are more streamlined, and there arent 4 different conversations going on at once.
This new update involving the mega-thread removal/gaming thread merge needs to be reverted in my opinion. With megathreads like LMAO pics or something like the TF2 threads I feel like it's better to have them so we can talk about whatever instead of having to make an individual thread for every little new update for a game since it's not only a waste of time, but it's a waste of thread space. As for the gaming merge thread I feel as if it's kind of like the equivalent of taking a neat stack of folders and throwing them altogether in a bucket so when you go back to find whatever file you want to read you have to slosh through all the other files you want in hopes of finding it. This just seems like one big mess.
tbh I'm genuinely surprised that LMAO Pics, literally the largest Megathread on Facepunch, hasn't be gutted into a "Funny" or "Humor" subsection yet.
I think squishing megathreads makes sense but not universally. some subforums that were created feels like they were created to make new sub forums
I'm down for that. The only reason I don't really visit that thread is because it's a clusterfuck and you have to sift through garbage to find good content.
So instead you want an entire subforum to be a clusterfuck you have to dig through to find good content
Why does all the discussion need to be streamlined? Even lots of subreddits have rolling megathreads since they see the need for a general discussion thread despite the nature of reddit.
Well since threads have titles I'd at least know what I was getting myself into. It would be even better if we brought back the ability to see the OPs most prominent rating is.
Maybe megathreads just need to autolock after a while so we can keep things fresh
When will we be able to see someones event log?
Yeah but those are proper megathreads, and not permanent "general" threads that are basically just chatroom channels.
Hol up, didn't a lot of you complain when Garry got rid of subforums. So he brings them back and now your complaining about them?
Love ya facepunch
They're a bit shit at the moment.
Nobody is complaining about the idea of more subforums.
People are complaining about adding way too many subforums and then forcing people to stop posting the way they've posted the last ten years in favour of inefficient clutter for the sake of clutter.
The complaint is with closing out megathreads and forcing an overflow of threads into the general forums. Even though it sounds organized on paper, in practice it's really hard for individual threads to stay relevant and creates a lot of pointless/arbitrary threads and (speculating here) lower quality content.
It's basically like if Reddit's "New" section was turned into the front page.
Nobody's complaining about subforums coming back! We're complaining that general discussion threads are getting axed with extreme prejudice for no good reason.
I like the new forums and I hope mods/admins/garry will be receptive to our complaints
Imean if you cant see that its not about the subforums but the fact that megathreads are being closed down and posts from subforums are being mixed around all together in the parent forums section making the pages look like some jackson pollock style mess idk what to tell you
generalized subforums are good way to organize threads
turning threads into subforums is a good way to turn the entire site into a barely alive clusterfuck
im personally complaining more about the mass lock/future removal of all megathreads/chat threads/etc
more subforums is a step in the right direction but a mass lock and killing megathreads/chat threads will kill a lot of communities here on FP
Well when the subforums are currently glorified tags that keep carpet bombing GD and related parent subforums, people might have reason to complain.
I mean I don't think mashing everything up in GD is good, it should be segregated but I can see why Garry's done it. Last time when we had a billion subforums everyone retreated to using like 3 threads (a mega thread, a mega thread on questions and a mega thread on post your x).
Right now, with a new subforum, it takes some time for people to understand what the fuck is going on and then when it happens, bam. Back to like 3-5 threads to which the subforum will be dead.
In my opinion, there should be a toggle to hide any thread that doesn't belong.
The megathreads are forums now! You have the same community, just better organization and tools to ask questions or get your point across.
... except for every game in GGD that didn't get a subforum, and every general in Lifestyle, and everything in GD that isn't automotive addicts
I see where you're coming from but unless it goes full Reddit where you can make your own subforum, it'll do more fracturing than bringing people together
except not, because in a megathread, you read every post. you know that what you post will be seen by someone. with everything being it's own thread, a bajillion threads will go buried and never seen or never clicked, making existing small communities even less active than they were before.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
