I cannot understand how you look at the parent subforums and think "better organization". Sure theres the direct link to the subforums themselves but that doesn't address the issue that the parent forums look like a mess
what's the point of subforums if they make non-subforum threads become lost in a mess
What AA had earlier today was fine - you had the general chit-chat thread which was the glue between the members of the community, just a chat lounge with the odd unimportant question being popped - and threads for actually noteworthy shit like Strontboer's awesome race car. This is the ideal model if you want to have subforums.
This kills FP TF2. I would rather have mobile working properly.
What about replacing the general chat threads with an actual live section chat? Perhaps you could have the section chat appear in any thread in that subforum as a pane on one side of the screen - toggleable, of course.
completely agree, I think this is the optimal solution for every forum/subforum on facepunch
It's way more logical to have conversations organized by which discussion is active instead of the chronological mess that you find in megathreads.
This is a really good idea, actually. Instead of pushing the chatty talk off of the forums to discord and away from the community at large, why not this?
More worthwhile discussions will be more active, and ones that aren't worthwhile will sink, that's the point.
I mean they're moderated by the same people so it's basically an extension of the forums
They're not cluttering up anything if they are pushed down by active discussions.
With just AA in particular (the only subcommunity I participate in frequently) every time we post the link to the discord in the chat threads, we'd get a few people joining who would usually say something to the effect of "I didn't know we had a Discord!" or similar. If the chatroom was integrated into the forum itself it'd be much more accessible since you don't need to hunt down an invite link, anyone who clicks on that subforum could instantly get in on the discussion without having to go through discord at all. It's not a huge deal to use Discord, don't get me wrong, but it seems like a good way to keep the best of both worlds. For instance, I could have a chatbox on AA to shitpost away dumb memes on while I work on uploading my pictures and whatnot of my project build to an actual thread in the subforum to catalog my work so others can see it and how it progressed. Threads serve their intended purpose, and the community still has the opportunity to easily jump in on the watercooler talk that a chatroom type thing would contain.
Imageboards solved this a while ago by adding reply links to any post being quoted or linked to.
It was integrated in oldpunch so garry or hezzy just need to redo it for newpunch
TF2 Emporium will also be closed. The GGC will be absolutely flooded with here's a concept/here's a wip/here's my finished hat or skin/here's my map,
Is this really the best way? https://puu.sh/zXecW/395dfcc5aa.png
alternativley, nobody will bother making new threads all the time and TF2 item making (one of the backbones of the TF2 community and facepunch as a whole) will wither and die, which I personally see as a more likely scenario
What if there are 20 active discussions and you're only interested in 3? Then essentially nothing has changed in the long run because you're still wading through other threads to find the ones you're interested in. What if there are only 3 active discussions? Then what was the point of getting rid of a single thread containing all discussion?
Hezzy explicitly said to make those threads, though. So either even he has no idea what he's doing or we're allowed megathreads as long as we get creative with our naming.
not according to hezzy Hezzy posted: What about threads for each class, for starters? The benefit of having separate threads is that you've more than one stream of discussion open to you. Different topics would be in different places, so with the new forum software you can tag the ones you're interested in and not pay attention to the topics you're not interested in.
Wouldn't that be a fucking shame, the TF2 content making community of FP is likely the primary source of ingame items, it going away would ultimately shorten the game's lifespan.
Do you really expect me to shift through the threads of a dozen subforums in one place?
probably not, TF2 content makers will continue making content and putting it on the workshop as usualy what it woudl really do is simply kill that communtiy here on facepunch
I actually feel less incentive to post now tbqh, I feel like my posts (or what new threads asking individual questions or making statements?) are gonna be ignored more than they were in a general. At the very least expand how many threads we see per page, no one really checks past the third page.
The whole Mario subforum and the TF2 class threads thing makes this all seem almost like an April Fools joke.
Better to sort through titles describing the content sorted activity than having to sift through content itself in chronological order.
What difference would a title for a thread in the subforum being in text form in a general make ? You're still doing the same thing and ignoring it and scrolling past it.
The free market will solve everything. If people want to have a general thread about a certain topic, let them, that's how they're going to choose to do things. If people want to have lots of little threads about various different subtopics, let them, that's how they're going to choose to do things. If you don't have thread-type restrictions in place, most online communities will move towards either end goal of these two thread styles, and with a smaller community forum like Facepunch you will end up with generals. Having rules in place for these sorts of things is a bit silly, but I do think that a general overall reset of threads might be beneficial since it'll give people new excuses to try out new things for a bit. You'll have people who want generals regardless, but that should be fine.
It was taken before its time, we had a lot of promise in Mario Smoking Weed Megathread
1 line of text that will only be on the first page if it's new or active vs potential paragraphs, images, embedded content, etc.
