The fact that Hezzy went out of his way to collect information and observe a user's behavior before making a decision makes me think moderation is taken pretty seriously, yeah. Also keep in mind Hezzy returned to us only recently; Tudd had been shitposting long before that.

Also may I remind you all that one thing Tudd was very good at was walking the line between breaking the rules and following them. You all might've been pissed off by him many many times, but that in itself isn't breaking the rules. Someone being generally unliked by the community isn't justification for a perma, at least in my opinion. Other people getting permas for small shit is a fair observation sure, but saying that means Tudd should've been banned despite not breaking the rules is just trying to use two wrongs to make a right.

That's simply completely untrue - people have (with good reason) been calling him out for being a troll for as long as he's been posting. Everyone knew he was breaking the rules, it's just that only moderators decide who to ban... and unban.

A lot of what Tudd got away with, and the problem he exposed, was how willing the moderation was to let you be a massive asshole and/or a racist piece of shit without being banned as long as being racist was just part of your political views. Because we can't ban people for their political views, that would be unbalanced!

A few years ago I would have agreed enthusiastically with this post, but with the way political discourse has devolved in recent times, I don't really think it's a realistic thing you can do any more. "Being racist" Is now a political position. Just look at the guy this thread is about, Towards the end he wasn't even posting pro-Trump content- he was posting stuff about how Muslims and brown people are all criminal savages. Something's wrong when our headline section looks like fucking /pol/ with all the carefully picked local news stories incriminating a particular minority group.
