It's natural instinct. Birds build nests to either impress a mate (males), are brooding meaning they get the feeling to incubate eggs, or are ready to lay eggs. I'm no bird expert but that's mostly all I know.
I would love to know how two vastly different animals can seemingly get along like this.
Why does the cat not eat the bird, why do the prey animals feel safe around that cat.

You're fairly on point. If i'm not mistaken on my bird knowledge, female lovebirds specifically do that in order to impress and show they are in breeding mode. It is instinctual and typically not encouraged for pets since they will turn to cage aggression to protect their nest. I've worked with exotic birds part time for 6~ years (family business yo) and since I'm poking in and not lurking, have a cranky old birb from the store.

Can confirm, female birds become assholes. My female budgie is all nippy and bittey right now. The males are all friendly saints.
