• Why is Garry being purposefully obtuse about the forum development?

That's true, luckily I only go to two threads in Games Discussion
duh, of course it's his forum. i know this might come as a shock to you, but you can accept that and still give feedback. i accept that there are people who whine too much, like i accept that there's snobby tryhards like you. users of a forum talk about the forum. gee that sure is crazy. yeah some will get whiny, but at least they're doing it to improve their forum experience, you're whining just for the sake of whining
lmao, resorting to name calling Yeah I make 2 posts and I'm a snobby tryhard
He's not wrong, this idea that you can't critic the forums because "its his forum his rules" is just absurd. Calling them whiners is just insulting, their trying to make the forums a better place.
I understand that development is hard or whatever, but we're in 2018 and this is the first time I've seen a website not work on a mobile device to this degree. Phones browse the web more than desktops now, and this threshold was crossed in 2016. You're trying to revolutionize the way internet forums work, but you fail to understand the way the tides are turning, you fail to account for the biggest market, and you fail to exploit that fact and account for it in your design? There's a lot of things I'm willing to accept, and I'm putting a bunch of trust in Garry here, probably more than is owed, but for Christ's sake you can't make a website work on a mobile device in the age of the fucking mobile device? All the other changes and ideas he's had I'm willing to get behind, but not accounting for phones is simply incompetence.
"listen here you whiny babies don't you dare call me names" i mean, if you're just here to tell people to shut up and accept that nothing changes then... don't come into feedback threads in the first place?
Just because it has always been like this doesn't make it right.
i just hate that when the new forum became the primary, there was an actual effort to interact with the community. fixes, ideas, etc. being taken by hezzy and the like. now it just feels like all of that... died off, and garry has just been super silent (even more so than before)
This is just an embarrassing backpedal to be honest, why even bother The point of the OP is that he thinks we are getting new features but no bug fixes, which is actually a pretty huge problem in many programs, where it'll get many features added on that'll add to the mess but no fixes. Now I don't totally agree with him, but you're just outright missing the point.
rip skoinks ??? - 2018
Man you are lucky the site doesn't even load for me!
When Garry gets back from his 17th holiday this year he's gonna be sooooo pissed
Looking at the commits pages, he really only went on holiday for a week or so in April like he said, since then he has been working on Tub non-stop.
I posted a day or two ago in the thread I made about everyone's top 5 requests I compiled the community's wishes and put them to garry. There's been some changes straight away (mobile functionality being one!) and there will be others, it just takes time. Everybody's patience is appreciated. I understand that some of you are frustrated but going off the rails benefits nobody. Constructive criticism is welcome.
Genuine question, is this the only place where you can play around with updates to the format, or can you test the updates before they get rolled out to the site? Because mobile seems like a massive oversight right now.
Honestly the options was this website we have now, or it just gets shut down. I'm glad and grateful that Facepunch forums is still here. If a WIP forums is what I have to deal with then so be it.
I actually didn't realize this when I made the post because I was still using the custom mobile fix CSS. My apologies, mobile works reasonably well now.
Yes, there's no testing forum or version
im sure garry thinks ur a fuckin legend now mate u got some goodboy points from that surely
Kinda reminds me of minecraft development. This forum will probably end up the same way, a bunch of half baked ideas abandoned and left for modders to pick up the slack
Hate to say it but i would say same thing if i were in same position
We still can't report. Or PM. We don't have the basic functionality we had with the previous forum. That's enough to complain about. i get nothing will change, so I'm not super upset, but that's how I see it
I love how this post from Garry broke the width of the page, considering what this thread's about. I presume it broke due to the number of different ratings. In terms of the topic at hand: guys, if you've ever written code, you'll know that bugs are commonplace, and that huge projects such as this forum can have bugs turn up in totally unexpected places as a result of a seemingly irrelevant change. I used to work in software development, and I can assure you that even massive companies' development and support teams regularly introduce bugs by mistake - it's just the nature of development. So yeah, please consider all of this when you're complaining. I'm actually impressed that Garry made this forum from scratch - it's not an easy thing to do.
with PM's, there is at least a good reason with its lacking of existence that I actually kind of agree with, the solution to its a bit tricky. lack of reports however is a massive problem. Discord and a thread just doesn't feel like a good option.
Who cares, it's a forum. Facepunch are busy making sweet games like S&box and Rust. Stop moaning, jeez.
I can't believe that nobody has done this yet https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57941/07bc5efb-f27f-4a5a-a358-c2f4bb70839f/garryangel.png
I get why people are annoyed that the forums are pretty half-broken, especially on mobile, but the calling out of Garry is pretty ridiculous. Sure, putting development on the backburner for two months is not ideal, but he’s doing it in his spare time, and this forum is not as important as it once was. I’ve been here for 8.5 years, I can wait a couple of months for the forums to shape up without throwing a temper tantrum. It’s not like the desktop site was ever completely unusable, so really it’s just been a case of mobile not working. Not calling out people with valid criticism, but this “wow Garry your ego is so big I literally can’t live without this forum for a day” is kinda pathetic. More on topic, a problem for me is definitely the wysiwyg editor - it just doesn’t work very well. When I write spoilers, it should be a spoiler for everyone else, not myself while I’m writing it. Personally I’d prefer the old tags + preview approach. Another one is quoting - it’s nice being able to quote multiple people without having to open a new tab, clicking reply, and copying the contents into your WiP reply. BUT not being able to edit quotes, split them up etc. is really cumbersome. Having visible post IDs would also be nice, so you can more easily link to a specific post. In terms of “new” features, it would be really cool to be able to choose a smaller default picture size for images uploaded to FP itself (dunno if the same would be possible with external sites). Maybe like a “limit to 1000x1000” until clicked? Most images don’t need to be 5000x5000 pixels, after all.
Personally the way the child forums work just makes most of the forums hard to browse, when it was implemented it took less than an hour before people asked for a way to filter them. From what I've seen it also seems to be splitting discussions up and as a result there seems to be a lot less activity, which in turn makes things stagnate even more.
It's simple enough: don't force moves when shit is still half broken, I'm sure we could have lived with a year's longer worth of vB if it meant a less broken forum to begin with. No skin off my nose, but the situation could have been handled far better than it was.
If you take critical analysis as name calling/whining... Idk what the hell you need to snap out of it, cause thats a terrible fucking mindset in both Business and in improving on things.
