Why is Garry being purposefully obtuse about the forum development?

I just wish WYSIWYG would go away, I just can't get used to it no matter how hard I try, it just doesn't doesn't cooperate.
Newpunch feels a lot like Garrys Mod.
Having to rely on addons (custom CSS code or even a browser extension) to fix whats broken or make things usable in the first place.
Genius way to save work, Garry.
I would lie if I said its fine, having to rely on a browser extension (FP Fixer) to get 5 things fixed and then having a bunch of CSS code to fix about 7 other things.
Most are fixes, some you could just call QoL changes or bringing back features from old FP.
I don't actually have any real visual style changes, well maybe hiding the sidebar is one although I put that under QoL fixes.
Having to maintain those myself or rely on helpful people and having to fix those with some experimental update (cough pictures in sidebar), is pretty suboptimal to say the least.
I can deal with it personally, although wouldn't surprise me if that turns of other people that have no clue about CSS etc.
Garry always did stuff in his own way,
gosh, do you people complaining not remember at all,
No avatars, 60 x 60 blue avatars, subforum purge, no megathreads and the list goes on even further.
People complain, some get banned, if Garry gets too pissed we all get punished some way.
Speaking off, newpunch is the greatest and most constructive change in a long time, beats vBulletin by a mile.
Some features may be different or lackluster but whatevs, works good enough most of the time.
(Though quoting could be more bearable)
If Garry didn't care he could have kept old punch chugging along on life support till the end of time or pulled the plug entirely.
I am really okay with these changes so far.
Maybe it's me, but on slower office computers the new website is awfully slow.
Wouldn't just be you, the site is pretty javascript intensive
You can't really expect Garry to hire a QA team for the forum though, so lots of broken stuff is to be expected.
honestly just bring back 'read' button and i would be okay with the absence of other features - i really don't get reasoning for it to go away. it doesn't make me want to go and explore the rest of forum, it just makes me frustrated that i have to manually go to each subforum and look for new comments in interesting for me threads.
subscription to threads is frustrating in the same way - it was so great before when threads would just disappear from 'read' page when i wasn't interested in them anymore.
~pwease gerri pwease impwove~
Follow thread button is way better. Read threads would always get cluttered with threads that I had no intention of going back to. Now when I log in I just middle click on all the new posts to open them in separate tabs. I was annoyed with no Read threads at first but honestly now that I have it down to a routine I never want to go back.
The QA team is currently anyone who uses the forum right now
loops back to if there was an alternate url that had in-dev commits, you've pretty much just got free QA for anyone reporting bugs on it
and if you've seen the amount of bug threads people have posted. No one cares about payment, you've just got to implement shit people care about to give reason enough to switch, even with what could be a bugged experience.
The thing is, a QA team would actually write instructions to reproduce bugs instead of writing "omg this forum sucks and it broke but I can't remember why." Don't get me wrong - some people write useful feedback, but I think it's a bit more complicated than you imply.
I can't even use it because I'd get emails every hour for every post made.
And that's not so say I want no emails. I want emails for some notifications, but it's like, if I had an email for every single thread I wanted to follow, it would be a cancer within my email folders
the big issue with "why didn't Garry test longer" is that I think there were maybe 300 people who regularly used newpunch prior to migration.
without any real incentive to switch, there's not enough people to properly test it
In preferences you can lower the email frequency, so it just sends you an email every hour (or every day) with your updates.
already is

I've been on these forums a long time, I rarely post but these are the best forums we've ever had.
I love the follow thread option too.
but a read thread option would be useful for when you accidentally click on a thread.
i now have threads with over 2000 posts because I accidentally clicked on it.
maybe introduce a unread thread option
It's still very so-so
There's a lot of room for improvement, but it does feel pretty fresh.
Posting from my phone just doesn't feel fun for one. Like yeah there's a number of criticisms, but with the amount of work that's being put into the forums. It's a decent result for it's effort
I don't really browse from my phone so I can't comment on that, but I really like the notifications along with the new look and feel.
Mobile is cool but I'm tired of these cards popping up when I'm just scrolling.

I'm tired of cards popping up on desktop too, people have noted how it hides the first rating a few minutes after it was implemented and it still isn't fixed.
Click for pop-up still seems like the best solution.
hello i think i my computer has a virus there is some ugly ass GUIs on some websites, it started few months ago with this website and now reddit looks like shit aswell help me thx
Oh, you mean a "mark as read" option. I thought you were referring to the "read threads" page on the previous forums. I agree that option would be great.
Yeah it's like you can't scroll on the avatar side because all the cards will pop up and you can't scroll on the text parts in case there are spoilers you don't want to accidentally highlight over
I'd pay to go back to oldpunch layout if I could.
I barely visit newpunch now because its just horrible on my phone and I have to force my device into desktop mode just so it's readable. Also only works in landscape, but these issues have already been reported 1000x now.

If that's flaming I'll eat a cactus
Might not be the definition of flaming but it was pretty aggressive.
It was flaming, and tbh the only unusual thing going on in this thread is that he hasn't been perma'd yet.
If Garry had made the forums open-source like he originally said he would then maybe the community could fix the bullshit that hasn't been fixed.
It didn't, the ban notification is fake
Garry isn't going to give much of a fuck unless something serious happens.
Any changes will happen when he's in the mood, which is not often.
