Cooliest/Uglest Weapons v10 - FAL Pride World Wide

I feel like there could still be enhancements made to ballistics, but then you get into the territory of replacing cartridges for the entire NATO forces, which is just not going to happen.
ya if there were an actual need to switch up NATO standard cartridges then we would, given enough lead time...
cartridge development itself has kind of hit a wall since you can't really make a big leap unless you get rid of something or introduce changes that could adversely affect its compatibility with current guns.
from a materials side, soon it may be possible to manufacture cases out of lighter weight materials that don't corrode either, but there's still lots of issues there, and manufacturing capability is still always going to lean towards formed brass as its so damn simple to make, only aluminum cans would be easier
LSAT looks pretty promising. I suspect in general plastic walled cases with metal rims could happen. The weight savings would be pretty big.
I think the only future soldier program that actually got carried through to fruition was the French FELIN

And even then it took over 10 years to develop and ship with a budget of over 1 billion euros.
It can be thought of as being rather similar to the American Land Warrior

Except the French actually finalized and put it into issue, whereas Land Warrior was also canned.
Essentially it's a combination of a variety of equipment. A web gear jacket that houses some of the computer systems and batteries as well as the usual water and munitions pouches. A rifle fitted with an advanced optic sight that can be used for day and night, and has a built in camera. A ballistic helmet with a headset, headcam, and monocular goggle that's linked in to the rifle camera. This is all linked together via a USB hub in the jacket, and the radio set links the whole squad together. Honestly, beyond the usual advancements in computer technology I don't think this can be improved upon short of actual cyborgs.
Even if programs like that end up being way too bulky, it can give a good idea of the possibilities and effects. This can be documented and then in a few years time it can be reconsidered when tech advances to the point it doesn't need a 1kg brick on your helmet, but something much more lightweight.

This is so satisfying

There's a pretty cool "future soldier" episode of black mirror, though the solution does end up being indefeasibly high tech there's some cool stuff about using small drones so each soldier has situational awareness
US SOF Technical in Syria. First time I've seen a Technical with an M2 on it.

Russia's Ratnik is also in use. Granted most of the tech is reserved for squad leaders.
Can't forget these sexy things though

Literally an MG42 mounted on a camera stabilizing rig.
I mean, I could see the whole "third arm"/militarized steadicam rig thing being used for pretty much what Aliens used it for in their props- a stabilizer for big MGs.
Given that the USMC is moving towards the IAR over the SAW due to weight and other factors, something like that kind of stabilizing system (refined and iterated, of course) might help make belt-feds a bit more practical going forward as militaries in major nations seek to cut down on weight carried a bit to reduce over encumberment of troops.
I can see it maybe being practical firing from the deck of a boat or ship where there's no pintle mount. Other than that, it's dumb and useless.
Keep in mind stuff like steadicam rigs don't really reduce weight all that much, all they do is stabilize the point of aim and redirect the weight to your waist instead of arms. It really won't stabilize any more than a conventional mount, and over time the weight fatigue won't be any different than carrying the gun in sling.
In the lore that rig is used because the Smart Gun tracks targets and it moves itself around on the rig.
the whole point of the smartgun is that, as pachira pointed out, the gun can identify threats on its own and its able to track them, while the user can take over if necesary. it literally can not fire at allies registered as such.
and also fires big hurting boolets
I've always wondered why they don't use androids as heavy weapon guys. Or, more specifically, why do they still use humans as cannon fodder if they have androids who are stronger, faster and expendable. Are they just too expensive for this or what.
Maybe since most colonial stuff would be human's causing a ruckus it'd require using Androids to kill people which would be immoral
The Russian Ratnik future soldier program is also one that got carried through. IIRC around 200,000 soldiers are equipped with it since 2016.
they are a literal luxury. If the suposed canon is to be believed, Blade runner and Alien exist in the same universe, wich means at some point corporations used replicants as colonist wich backfired horribly as soon as replicants gained self awareness, revolting and causing a masive shitsorm. I can see why they were reluctant about putting androids in military roles.
I think the USCM mostly uses androids as engineers and other tech related things. However in AVP2 (the game not the shitty movie) the Weyland Yutani dudes have combat androids.
Maybe there is some sort of restriction against using combat androids, but evil corp don't give a fuck.
If Blade Runner and Alien share canon, then Weyland-Yutani inevitably becomes top dog in the android market, and they’re hardly one to let morals get in the way of a good percentage.
The only reason the later Bishop (and even the Walter) models were programmed to be more docile was probably more because there were too many WY teams that had been killed off by their product and they became more of a hazard than a benefit.
chances are that in-universe humans are more disposable than androids simply due to how human resource is still the most abundant one.
Legit thought that was going to be a clickhole video or something.
The old law of robotics, never harm a human being.
What I don't understand is why the bird didn't bug off as soon as the boots hit the ground. A grounded aircraft is seriously vulnerable.
Really why land it at all? Thry were basically airdropping already, why not commit to it and just parachute down.
risk of injury, risk of scattering the formation most likely
the advantage of an air assault is that, if everything goes smoothly, you have better control over the situation than a straight up airdrop

Huh, so apparently that's what happens when you get a double feed on a bottom ejecting gun, the extra rounds just fell right out.
That's not a mistake, that's a built in ammunition saving feature! In the same vein as magazine cutoffs, this feature allows them to dump the magazine and conserve ammo at the same time.
