My understanding is that particular Elcan model sucks.
oh lol Well fair enough then
is there a reason why the US SOF have such varied camo Like they could be wearing 90s woodland, and then AOR next
The only guys still using the older camo is MARSOC. And I think that is a fashion statement more than anything.
I thought that was becasue they mostly tagged along with local units that wore older camo, so as not to stand out they wore it too. Or something.
US guys are no where near as varied as Russians. It's not uncommon for a single Spetsnaz trooper to be wearing multiple different patterns that can be anywhere between 0 and 70 years old.
That is quite an old photo though, isn't it? The regular Russian army looks quite uniform now, as far as I know.
it does any unit that is fully equipped is usually deployed wherever because they're the only unit that's fully equipped. there's still infantry that uses soviet era stuff, but you never see them becuase they're never deployed anywhere. https://i.imgur.com/sro0afx.jpg or you can be these guys with ratty 6b12s, one visibly shot, and covered 68s. fully equipped divisions aren't that common basically, and they're half for show and half becuase thats literally all they have.
At the end of the day, uniforms are just clothes. The best use of them is to issue them directly to the conscripts to help instil they idea they are supposed to be disciplined. If someone has already signed up as a regular professional you might as well just let them use anything from the armoury, while you give the best the best and rear troops the dregs. Sorry for the image dump, but here's a variety of Russian soldiers of various grades from 2018. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/42214923-2fa5-4a07-b576-3691bdc8d880/4 (1).jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/97ca6bf4-f63f-4c7a-b84b-70883990ddda/G3TFLwB.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/20bd92a4-ff5a-4b99-b2ae-31d98c8df49e/3 (1).jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/f9a71bd2-eccd-4875-b7d9-8c4f2af7d2f2/cnHlWMM.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/4b3fbc13-53b0-4500-9fde-ada741e9c0ef/Qmny66y.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/bc251dfa-8a5b-4c1a-bbb3-c9a4eb21de9a/HKHILG7.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/116d6518-5516-4978-ac0a-fd237fdfc81b/6.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/f2628215-0530-443a-a643-e0153044ae55/iBIsrNa.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/52d81e74-356a-43a0-a4d4-1d420bdf69a2/iIyJW4l.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/566b3a51-913b-4b5c-a8c0-7ef1276df3b0/EYqJEwy.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/cc886de4-1bdc-4b83-b8f7-c191a40c6591/AU1Y20291200.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/5557f4ab-737f-4d9b-838e-c3bf26938db7/eFBrkHf.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/1fd312a5-6bd8-4941-89f2-783a9ccd1e26/zm.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/8b737900-140f-43e0-94ab-c63c0a862f9b/4 (2).jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/9649688d-42e6-45d4-8044-31e77e7e6990/WN9SCzj.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/f57c0291-6da3-4727-b9c0-04125bc13068/dBywLOU.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/11317905-2433-4ab7-a1dd-83d34f7b8fd0/AU1Y20031200.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/feedb4c8-1b8c-4970-978e-904a10996443/WsPykeD.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/def6a5bd-4488-4522-883d-c1de35a13f5e/3.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/223974/140b14ad-50d8-439d-9211-dcb245e14a64/jqQsFSc.jpg They are still issuing AKM's to people. Might as well embrace the chaos of war.
Army SF still sometimes uses it if they partner with Afghan units that wear it. Delta Force has also been seen wearing it in a Jungle AO http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180815/3f2b45930e48ba160961de7a6377e763.jpg https://image.ibb.co/bRMyfp/Fe0_Xv5jp_RQA_3.jpg https://scontent-vie1-1.cdninstagram.com/vp/8c081b4fd83897ced37beb44cf3480b1/5C020A12/t51.2885-15/e35/38194825_232797864241685_5947372000820330496_n.jpg?se=7 Also one of those guys is wearing ERDL
I mean, if it works, it works. Why throw out perfectly good equipment or uniforms? Just use it until it's more trouble than it's worth to keep running. 'Course, when we're talking about older vehicles or weapon systems that use obsolete parts or ammo, I can understand ditching them for logistics reasons. Kinda like how we're still struggling along with WW2 era 40mm Bofors guns for our AC-130s. Just figure out how to mount the new ones, for god's sake.
im sure eventually we'll see something akin to that post soviet dissemination of equipment give it like 10 or so years and we might see digiflora as something as common as regular ol flora then they might be able to drain all the immediate post soviet equipment out of their armories and it'll get spread about eastern europe even further. there's already a shit ton of it going to 3rd world countries all over, i have no doubt we'll start seeing some of the late 90s equipment go that way soon.
Uniforms play a practical role. The last thing you want is everyone wearing marpat on the battlefield and nobody has a clue whose team they're on.

Thick fur collars on uniform is a pretty strong aesthetic.
as an owner of a winter afghanka they're also insanely comfortable makes up for the fact that you cant lift your arms above your head
Honestly it just looks like a couple of scratches/tears or something rather than actual bullet holes as the vest is obviously pretty old. Anyway, at least officially they've been buying 50000 ratnik sets annually since 2014, so it must be somewhere around 250000 delivered sets at the end of this year. But considering the numbers of the ground forces and the airborne alone(350000 + ~70000), simple math tells they won't be able to fully equip the whole military with new stuff until at least 2023. So yeah, there should be at least ~40% of troops that still wear old style uniforms.
ive actually been pretty curious about ratnik sets ive heard some people say they arent that great and that the old stuff's better but iunno what to go on there also been hearing that a lot of ratnik stuff's reserved for soldiers of higher ranks, but again iunno what to beleive there with russia's notorious variety.
Afaik it's not about ranks but rather training and combat readiness. The more well trained you are, the earlier you get new stuff. Not sure what to say about the quality though. I've heard the ear protection is pure shit, but I've also seen positive feedback on the body armor and some other components. I guess its relatively OK overall, but its obviously not great and still needs a lot of adjustment even now, 4 years after it's introduction.
Be aware that there are a lot of clones of Ratnik gear already. Some Russian Army enthusiasts ordered several earpro's from different sellers and they weren't all the same. I think that also contributes to the rumors around the quality. Civilians order them from a third party and receive something else.
Back when I was still serving (Singapore) I did buy a set of Ratnik earpro. Was pretty dogshit tbh (batteries would jam inside the compartment, amplification was pretty bad and so was the dampening and the mesh looked p fucking gay) and a set of Howard Leight Impact Sports worked far better. Admittedly the Ratniks did fit far better under my helmet and also seeing your young range safety sergeant rock up in a pair of earpro with Cyrillic lettering on the sides was p unsettling for most dudes but that's about it.
ugh howard leights give me a headache if I wear them for more than 30 minutes at a time

Welp, some new dakka out of Brazil: https://homemadeguns.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/madcarlos.jpg?w=625 https://homemadeguns.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/img_20180823_172728933.jpg?w=625 https://homemadeguns.files.wordpress.com/2018/08/brazilsmg18042018-2.jpg?w=625 Every year that goes by... These guns are getting better and better. Wish I still had that picture of the one 5.56 rifle that was craft produced by some cartel in Brazil.

I need this 12-gauge revolver in a game I don't care which one I need it
H3VR might be something that takes it on.
As far as homebrew guns go, I think the Luty is still the most stylish. It's got the rugged look of being home made, but it doesn't look like you got your parts from the scrap yard. https://www.forgottenweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/Screen-Shot-2017-07-19-at-1.27.12-PM.png
https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/R9ARMSPISTOL1.jpg I still think these are really impressive for being made in a Croatian basement. The "R9 Arms Corp USA" markings are fake, there is no R9 Arms company either in the US or otherwise, these are entirely illicitly made, and it appears they came from a black market gun maker in Croatia.
