on intersections with an uncontrolled left turn, if the pedestrians to your left have pushed to walk parallel to you, they will get a walk signal. you creep into the intersection, wait for them to clear, and then make your left turn https://i.imgur.com/usVQZ5K.jpg if the walk hand was instead a walk man, pedestrians would be walking, and once they were out of the crosswalk, you can then make your turn if you have a green arrow (so a controlled left) however, that means the pedestrians are seeing a don't walk. also don't commit to making a uncontrolled left turn unless you're certain you can clear the intersection before the light turns red, or at absolute worst you should be the only car ahead of the limit line when the light turns red to clear the intersection.

also open container laws vary by state but I'm pretty sure Texas is zero tolerance on open containers. most states will allow passengers to have an open container, but not the driver. I think mississippi is the only state with no open container laws whatsoever

I feel you on the auto part, I rented a new corolla for a road trip and every time I had to come to a quick stop, my left foot would go straight to the floor. it feels incredibly wrong. Also try some Whataburger and Chik Fil A while you're here, they're kind of overrated but still pretty good for fast food. Would recommend buc-ee's as well, cleanest shitters you'll find at a rest stop guaranteed.

Depends on where you are in Southern California. I've been overtaken by a Ford Transit doing 100 MPH down the I5, but then the next weekend get pulled over doing 10 over on the 101 near LA.
