I'm not much of a car person but I figure I'd post about what happened today here too: Speaking of cars, we needed to move my old Jeep (1992 Jeep Cherokee) back a few feet after sitting for 10 years to make room for something but it wouldn't start (seemed like it wasn't getting any fuel) If you ever want to hear an angry engine, try running one full of 10 year old oil on starter fluid and ask it to do anything It was knocking harder than a Jehovah's Witness on an early Sunday morning and blowing more smoke than Donald Trump at a pep rally, but it did move Edit: Honestly I think that just speaks volumes of AMC straight sixes, they never die
sad one tonight boys; gotta sell my impreza.
It's a civic
Off-topic: Everyone should have to own a large car early in their driving life. Not because big cars are better, but because you’re forced to learn how to drive perfectly with them. Eg back when I went to university, all of the car parks were really narrow. But I could park perfectly within them in my large sedan, every single time. But so many people with smaller cars, eg Fiat 500 sized, tend to park awfully, even over the painted lines. It is just infuriating.
The two cars I've had were hand-me-downs from family. The first was a 98ish Expedition and the one i got now is a 06 Silverado classic. The last time I drove a car was drivers ed during high school. Until recently when my friend let me drive his Acura around the block. Everything felt more nimble and smooth. The turning radius was insane.
I can thread any needle in my truck as long as I'm moving above 10 mph. Fucking suck at parking that thing.
i regularly impress people with my ability to not run into things for some reason
Haven't posted in this thread for a while, thought I'd drop some goat photos from my first autox https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/218082/c033ab29-23e2-4eb6-8416-43ea4e400809/20180916_101401.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/218082/e5edf7ba-f86a-489e-bf94-4235af1942eb/DSC00717.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/218082/159fd4b5-3130-4d37-a43d-270cee9be4b4/DSC00723.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/218082/a563a37e-e3c7-4549-bc21-4e371cee408c/DSC00720.JPG
nice monaro m8
Naw that’s a GTO... gran turismo omologato... it’s homologated for something? It’s in the name so it must be true! Okay but seriously I reckon it’s funny how automakers will slap a GT badge onto just about anything. Probably the only proper grand tourers in production today are the RR Wraith, Merc S-class coupé and maybe the Bentley Continental
Bought a 2001 Jag X-type from relative. The drive feel on it is sublime, mechanically in top notch condition too, pretty happy with it so far. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1612/96e4b14f-94b9-4037-94bc-5a1f0472f831/image.png That wire you see coming out the gearstick is a retrofitted aux cable lmao. It's hacked so that you can no longer play cassette tapes, it instead takes aux input
I took my test in my grandparents Buick. Passed first time, but the cone test was a little harrowing. After that I only drove vans for a while (carpool lyfe). Even going back and forth between my Miat and Volvo now is a trip.
to be fair, that gto is based on the holden monaro, which was a revival of an old nameplate of 2 door more performance orientated holden from the 60's and 70's. original monaros have a race pedigree and so do the commodores that gto is based of as at least it's not entirely inaccurate
lol calm your farm. I know all about the Monaro. I was poking fun at the name that Pontiac used when they re-badged it (and of course, HSV were naughty too and had the HSV Coupé GTO as well). Hell, even the original Pontiac GTO didn’t really warrant a GTO badge.
gto was grand tempest option, as in it was the grandest optional trim for the pontiac tempest. it didnt stand for gran turismo other italian word like the ferrari. they chose the name to invoke the idea of a race car because at the time it was the fastest non-corvette car gm ever made, not because it was actually a homologated grand tourer
My dad has an X type, it's a wonderful thing. I was driving it with the jag club when the XJ was in bits and kept up with a buddy in a Ferrari Testarossa. Garunteed the ferrari had more in it if he wanted to push it and the X type was nearing it's limit, but in practical terms i was keeping up on roughly equal terms. Wonderful machine.
Big step forward in the '71 MG revival tonight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Q7oOZMSYt8 Now on to wiring. The brakes and clutch work!
fuck didn't see it was my fellow bogan posting, if I did I wouldn't have questioned your knowledge of aussie cars
Easy misunderstanding, given what I post about here. I’m probably the only bogan in Australia/NZ who watches Formula 1 and whose dream car is an Alfa haha
Gave the GT-R its last good wash before its long sleep until spring. Gonna miss it. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/238649/c3aacdad-06fc-4f31-944f-1b93a191e142/20181006_154556.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/238649/d64bc212-e628-4e30-835f-46ac460f4910/20181006_154711.jpg
Here's an odd one: My dad has a 1998 GMC Safari, original owner. We took it out of storage a few weeks ago to find the anti-lock warning light illuminated. Everything else appeared normal, drove fine too. We bought a scanner that could read ABS codes, only to find that the computer isn't throwing any codes. Even pulling the ABS fuse didn't turn off the light. We're going to check the wiring once we have time. I'm wondering if it's simply a problem with the instrument panel, as a couple of the gauges have been flickering too. Any advice would be appreciated.
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/228931/2b1be61a-1a50-4117-bd0f-50a0a6dd3c16/IMG_1577.JPG Seat get. Seems pretty easy to make an adaptor plate out of angle iron. Though the seat is the correct 50" across, It's 55" overall with the reclining levers, and i need to shave it down to 53" at the least to fit Sketchy. It's a single cab so i don't need to recline at all so it might just come down to going ham and removing the levers. It's also a nash seat which means they fold all the way back to form a bed, as is nash tradition, which is cool. Also while i was away picking it up, Dad bought a fucking '55 thunderbird. What an eventful day.
So... I've been away for a while. I used to have a Facepunch account, which I created in 2005. That account is apparently not valid anymore?
go here https://auth.facepunch.com/legacy/start type in your last username and password, have fun
Thanks dude. I guess it's a lost cause though. It says username/password isn't recognized, even though I know that I'm plotting in the right information. Oh well, it was a fun 13 years.
So yesterday i was digging through the attic of my deceased grandparents house, and i found this dashboard that belongs to a VAZ 2101 that was there for at least 30 years https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/367c87cd-7bbb-4903-b34e-95817c629daf/DSC00623.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/fae2aa09-643f-4f82-ac77-c4142c74aa4d/DSC00624.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/9ca89eef-d757-4211-8ec6-0e6aef25ab6c/DSC00625.JPG https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/57917/92d7cb25-7c0d-47c1-9912-777e4254ec00/DSC00626.JPG i could either try to restore it, fix the cracks and sell it, or just clean it up and sell it.
Reminds me of the 2007 Suburban that became my daily to get around when I got my license to drive. Treated it like a vehicle several times it's size and treated the brakes with no survivors, leaving it a shuddering mess if graced with the concept of stopping, and any care to the body was tossed aside to use the bumper to nudge some rouge cart out of the way. But I did enjoy the feeling you'd get driving something imposing and any shitdicks who wanted to cut their way in could be absolutely denied with the loud rumble of a V8 hauling ass. Could park with with some relative ease, usually right in or I think just simply backing in and making use of the proximity sensor. Perhaps the only reason I really hated it was the audio blueballs it gives since it has a wonderful sound stage for music but it's absolutely soiled by a AUX grounding issue that would be prohibitively costly to find and solve. Trying to find some middle-ground with the terrestrial radio wasn't going to be much of an option since it can't pull good reception and the rural areas of Indiana didn't do it any favors there. Yet, even after I switched to a new Subaru Impreza Hatchback then a Crosstrek, I would still give it a nostalgia-filled drive if it happened to find itself in the driveway since it was released back to being the spare vehicle in the family, now currently in use by my sister. Sure, the steering isn't as tight as my own car, guzzles fuel (because of course), burns oil (not to be matched to the godawful BMW), still has the AUX buzz, and one of the powered windows don't work it's still comforting to have some familiarity with it.
So I'm looking for an upgrade to my 2002 Opel Astra. I don't want anything fancy or fast, just something reliable to take me to and from work, a 60km daily drive. I've found a 2015 Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1,2 TSI that's rolled about 60 000 kilometers (~37000 miles), with an asking price of ~10K USD (90 000 SEK). I've taken it for a test drive and I personally liked how it felt and handled, an improvement over my current Astra, at least. The most important part is reliability, though, I've done some research myself and from what I can see most people are pretty happy with them even after extensive time and mileage. I'd still like some opinions from here, though, I know practically fuck all about cars except for the basics, and the most advanced thing I've ever done is changing the head gasket of the previously mentioned Astra with the help of one of my gearhead friends, so I'd really appreciate a car that doesn't require constant maintenance
I saw this all the time while working at Wally World. People would buy those cheap 40 dollar cold air intakes and leave it pointing right where you said. No heat shield or anything. I also saw one that some had cut a hold in the tube and stuck a boost gauge in it and then put some JB weld on it.

Guy wants WAY TOO MUCH DOUGH, even though the motor has 35k on it and he's offering paint repair + new windshield as part of the deal. I've seen a V70 T5M turned into a truck, but it was nowhere near as well done as this. This build is fucking dope, he even welded and cleaned up the seams of the old rear doors, plus added tubular frame work under the body panels to compensate for the lost rigidity. Aside from what you can see listed: AWD swap from a 2000 XC70 paired to a P2R 6-speed manual Bigass Lexus brakes ARD tuned for 20PSI and revs to 7200 Full custom stainless 3" to 2x1.75" exhaust IMO he's really smart building a 2.4 motor with an R manifold+K24 turbo, cause the 2.5 cylinder walls crack under high power without reinforcement, also the 2.4s do this.
