UK CHAT V5: Buying a pack of dodgy fags from a wide boy in Spoons

something something immigration something something brexit means brexit
i'm all down for brexit not happening but if it doesn't happen then its a critical blow to the democratic voting system as a whole. If the people voted for it, you gotta do it. Even if its going to end up probably bad, still gotta do it.
I think because a lot of Brexit was misrepresented / completely not planned it'd be worth another referendum
Going back to a referendum with more information isn't a bad thing. We're a year (or two? time flies) down the line and it makes good, common sense to re-evaluate where we are and where we're going.
If you're following a path and see that it appears to be leading you off of a cliff, you don't just carry on walking because "welp I'm comitted now". You stop, look and change direction.
I don't really see how it is a blow to the democratic system when this country isn't governed using Direct Democracy. There's a reason 99% of policy is not determined by a referendum, because you wind up with shit like brexit.
All the referendum involved was a bit of paper with "do you support leaving the EU yes/no" on it. There was no indication it was going to lead to anything, it wasn't legally binding. At most I saw it as a way for the government to gauge the feeling of the public and based on the answer it would influence our dealings with the EU and if things didnt improve then further down the line it could lead to us leaving.
But nope it got 51% of the vote better drop everything and focus on this dumbass idea that no one figured out a plan for because I guess this country is run on mob rule now.
They're normally outside the Chinese embassy or in Chinatown.
I still stand by the idea that the government should not have split into 2 campaign groups (thus creating a massive split in politics and society) but should have worked together on creating manifestos for leaving and remaining. They should have had an agreed plan in place before the vote happened.
I hate this summer. I went to Greece for a week, came back looking as pale as I normally am. I go to Skeg for a day and suddenly I'm half man half lobster.
May I ask a question about Brexit in here? Since I've gotten mixed answers from random brits I asked, none of which seemed to know what the fuck their were talking about.
brexit means brexit
Nobody knows what the fuck they're talking about when it comes to Brexit. Not even our Government knows
Still feel free to ask though, you wont get a coherent response
Ok
So for the people who want Brexit, What is the problem with the EU? I never really get any answers for it. Some say trade regulations are too strict, some said something about a EU Army plan, and another said you guys don''t get a vote in the EU parliament (or whatever its called). Since every time I looked up any of this, It didn't seem to be fully the case. But I'm an outsider, so I don't really know much
BREXIT MEANS BREXIT
There is a lot of misinformation on the subject. People love to have someone to blame for anything and everything (it's why automated control of nuclear reactors still isnt a thing). The arguments for leaving look something like:
We pay a massive membership fee every year (True, but we do see some of it back in subsidy and this does ignore a more difficult to quantify economic benefits from free trade etc)
The EU sets trade rules for members, which we all abide by. This means we have a lot less say on how we trade with other countries (inside and outside the EU). There is an argument that much of the UK small/medium sized industry does very little trade with the EU (citation needed!), yet are burdened by all the regulations we must abide by as a country as a condition of our EU membership.
People reckon we might be able to get more "rest of world" investment (see Singapore) to offset other financial burdens related to leaving, which our current EU membership inhibits.
"Sovereignty" - Membership of the EU means adopting some of their rules and regulations, this is seen as "losing control of our domestic affairs" despite the fact we are always involved in drawing up these rules and regulations and many of them are highly beneficial in some form (be that environmental, safety etc)
For the record I'm pro-EU so this probably isnt a perfect list. I've tried to be balanced though.
If we remove the hurr durr Daily Mail immigration fearing crowd, I think it boils down to the fact that the EU has overgrown its purpose as a trade union. If it stuck as a trade union that had benefits like freedom of movement and providing funding for research I don't think people would really care all too much. I know we wrote most of the laws anyway but whatever.
Just going to put this strawpoll here so you can decide what video game I should play but you won't get to watch me play it.

Well, Cheltenham wasn't too bad. Surprised how most people do a lot of walking/biking into town considering the size of some wide lads I saw in spoons. Wasn't too shocked about the class divide, some people are right old posh and then you've got the other classes. Why is it that at 4pm, the town centre was basically dead and all the drunks and druggies come out? Not hating on them, in fact, they kept to themselves and were rather considerate to most other people. Did see one drunk trying to sell a brand new pair of trainers to a homeless man- good luck there pal. Overall, I'd give Cheltenham a 7/10.
sounds like every other town in england
Nothing beats a crackhead trying to sell you aftershave from foil lined carrier bag
Just had an old Audi try and race me off the line.. he ended up breaking down
I don't know what was up with it but as he got up to speed his car started grinding extremely loudly, I could hear it very clearly even over the road noise at 75 MPH. Looks like he lost power and coasted into a layby.
Too bad we've got to build bypasses...
Just moved back to London after uni. Anyone know any good/free shit to do to during summer?
are you a plant?
Facking hell, plants are claiming benefits? Broken Britain indeed.
can't move, can't talk, can't see, no functioning limbs but the Tories think they're fit for work
Tap water isn't free in England, is it?
It's free over here in Scotland (well - you pay it with your council tax)
you have to put 50p in the meter behind the sink
