What the fuck you're in Southend mate? Essex facepunch pub meet when? I know there's a guy in Colchester, and a few others about.
Fuck I go to Essex way too much, if I'm not at home I'm either in Essex or at work, what a sad life to live
Come see a fringe show and say hi when you're in Edinburgh
Fellas, I’m moving into a new flat in a few weeks and got most of the essentials done. What internet provider should I go with? Seems that most “unlimited broadband” packages are about £30 a month for 12 months before they jack up the price.
Also, it’s an unfurnished apartment, so how much should I spend or how much have you spent buying everything for your place? So far my shopping list is at £600 including a new mattress. Was going to get 2nd hand sofa, cabinets, tables etc from the British heart foundation as I’m not too fussed about that.
Make sure what you buy is truly unlimited. Getting just the unlimited options can open you up to throttling.
BT and Virgin are good for speeds. Customer service though? They're all shit tbh.
The service I've had from Virgin has always been alright tbh.
Thanks for your help guys, virgin media does sound like a good choice. Gonna ring em tomorrow and see how “excellent” their customer service is.
To put it into perspective: when the ASA introduced new rules a few months ago for broadband advertising that requires ISPs to display minimum guaranteed speeds rather than "up to", Virgin Media was the only company who's advertised speeds went up to be closer to their actual average delivery.

Virgin are the best ISP I've been with by miles, I've had zero bullshit in the 8 years I've used them, which is more than can be said for fucking BT. It's a shame, out in the sticks BT is most some folk can get, my mum pays full price and gets dial-up speeds, and BT aren't willing to do anything about it because they have a monopoly in the area, honestly couldn't give two shits. So yeah, BT can fuck off.
We switched from Virgin to Vodafone for some reason.
There were dark times between rayguns where we had no ISP and so no internet.
not all of us survived
Yeah Virgin have been really good recently. Back around 2014ish I did have a few months with terrible internet that went down every day, but since then it's been great. I do get the occasional issue, but it's usually fixed pretty quickly.
I remember asking about fibre optics last year and my dad was like "Oh yeah, we're meant to get them!". I was excited to have semi-decent internet connection but when I asked when, my dad responded "four years ago". We're only still with BT because my parents tried switching to Talktalk and they were terrible. When BT caught wind of us planning to leave, they very quickly arrived to sort out fibre optics at a lower price.
virgin fiber optic has been sick for me for the last 3 years but sometimes i get really bad packet loss for like a week and idk why. their customer suppport is shit but that's what you'd expect from an isp.
I tried to trim away all the dead leaves and branches from my potted ivy but I pretty much had to chop off all but a few healthy leaves at the base... Everything I touch dies.
I'm in one of those in-the-sticks areas with BT only. fuck sometimes when I'm out the house in the local area I'm surprised we even have the wheel.
Yeah but you could live in Essex. Imagine that.
You fuckin' what mate. Essex is great, and it's not the North!
The speeds you get really depend on how close you are to the interchange too. Virgin is good for most (we've been with them for ages and have had great speeds 99% of the time), but if you're in an area with shit Virgin coverage it might be better to look elsewhere. Bit of a postcode lottery.
I'm allowed to say that cause I was born here.
I've lived in Essex all my life and I want to die.
I'm from chelmsford and escaped
I don't want to move back
i moved from aberdeen scotland to be with my gf, who i met via facepunch, in southend and its not bad but im looking forward to move back up north
Suffolk buh looking down (literally and metaphorically) on all you Essex slumlords
For fucks sake, the thread is broken again.
Thread broken again?
Asking here hopefully UK-ers know:
How do cops in UK know when your car tax is expired/missing? Do they use ANPR cameras to check number plates against expired DB or something?
I am travelling to UK on Friday and just discovered my tax disc/document is missing, I lost it somewhere.
How lax would UK cops be if they asked me for proof of tax and I showed them email confirmation of my tax payment? Or would they fine me anyway?
Like I paid for tax in Ireland but don't have small paper thingy on my windshield.
Yes.
So long as you have decent proof you should be fine. They'll typically check the proof against insurance databases which presumably would confirm you have it.
How would they know if I have insurance in Ireland?
Will they just call them directly?
p much the same. I actually get 30mbs~ over what I pay for which is nice but occasionally it has a spree of shitty ping filled days.
How many of you have Amazon prime or just prime video?
Been weighing up the costs as Virgin Media has two bundles - unlimited internet for £35/month or unlimited internet and TV for £32/month (£51 a month after 12 months) The real stinger is that I will need to fork out £12.50 a month for a TV license if I go for TV and internet bundle. However, I was thinking of getting internet and a subscription service, either Amazon prime or Netflix. Haven't used either so I don't know which one is best.
Surely unlimited internet and Amazon prime would be a better choice for £43 a month as opposed to unlimited internet and vigin tv box for £44 with the unfortunate price hike at the end of 12 months.
