Germany rotation, it's great.... i guess. Still sucks i'm making less money than i was back in the states.
If you got half a brain, you'll avoid marines. Legit, go Air Force, use your brain.
Nah
Seemingly this thread is abit dead but I recently applied for joining the airforce in my country as a NCO role (I think) IT communications and info systems. I still need to wait for my recruiter to give me a appointment for when I am gonna take my physcological check and then move on to the medical checkup while they also run a background check meanwhile. I'm pretty excited and also currently training so I get at least some good results in for the medical checkup.
By the way can any current (or former) serving dutch military lads give me a general impression of what I need to expect?
thread's only dead because anything related to the military takes a long ass time
Come be a Marine and join the big dysfunctional family. Eat crayons, do ultra gay shit, and become an alcoholic.
Come join the Army, where people are promoted too fast for their own good with no job competence required, and you do things not based on how effective it is, but because that's the way it was always done. Oh, and you have longer deployments than the other services, have fun.
Trying my luck with an application to the RAF instead of the Army. Fingers crossed.
I have been invited to an Airman Selection Test! That was quick. Very excited. Still hoping to be an armourer, or weapon technician as the RAF calls it.
West Point or Naval Academy?
I'd assume neither since he's in the UK and not US.
No it's a separate question from the Brit. Was wondering if anybody thought which was better?
I’d personally recommend just going to a normal college and doing ROTC since it prepares you a lot for real life interactions and I feel like going to an academy really keeps you sheltered and doesn’t give you a huge advantage. I’m in army rotc right now so I’m a little biased, but the westpointers I’ve met are all about to be serious alcoholics in BOLC since they never got the opportunity to get partying out of their systems
I recommend Naval Academy over West point because you can go either USMC or USN from there gives you more of an option since Navy offers oceanography, nursing, and a bunch of other officer communities outside shooty shooty. If you are seriously considering Annapolis my divo is a academy grad himself and I can pass on any questions to him.
Been getting word passed down that I'm going to be getting on a meritorious board.
What does that entail?
Basically my Gunny and NCOs along with how good I am at my job believe that I should bypass the traditional cutting score for picking up Corporal. Because I demonstrate fine leadership traits, professionalism while working, I work hard and show that I'm dedicated and care about my job.
Coming from an academy dropout, don't go for it unless you're ready to go ALL IN. I'd say go normal college + ROTC so you can have some freedom.
I'm interested in getting a degree in EECS, so it might make sense to stay in the Bay Area.
Viper, if you get a chance, could you update my entry in the OP? I recently promoted.

I'll echo what some of the others have said about the service academies. The biggest pro to going an academy is the credentials and having a better chance of getting the career field you want. But from what I've seen, the academies don't necessarily produce better officers than ROTC or OTS/OCS.
Bottom line, it's your decision. The best you can do is seek as much information you can and do what you want. Just know that once you get to the "real" military, no one will care where you commissioned from, least of all the enlisted force.
Any of you Amerikanski's out there start using your Tuition Assistance? I'm having a hard time figuring out how to make use of it before I get out. I'm planning on using GI Bill when I get out for some sort of electrical/computer engineering, or maybe information technology degree, and I've heard that the best way to set yourself up while in is to simply knock out general education coursework online.
I've heard of people going through UMUC to handle their basic gen-ed stuff, but I'm worried about how well their credits will transfer... and I guess in extension the credits I'd get from any primarily online institution. I already have my Associates in Electronic Systems Technology through CCAF- could I simply transfer CLEPs I took for that towards a Bachelors degree elsewhere?
I really have no idea how this works.
Besides all that, I guess in general I'm curious on what are some of the things you guys have done. What plans do you or did you guys have?
You @ Misawa?
Was in Japan for 10 years but the courses offered by both UMUC and CCC weren't really what I wanted and what they offered that I did want (IT) was only offered state side in physical classes by CCC and UMUC at the time, then I became a dad and had to deal with my wife's immigration paperwork as I was bring for PCSed back to CONUS.
Using TA now, my recommendation?
Do UMUC and don't just do general Ed courses, if you have enough time actually push out a AS or BA. Get out and use your GI bill to pursue a second degree or a master's which is a bit smarter use of TA. I've head UMUC is pretty flexible in transferring credits as most Unis will accept them so you should be fine.
I don't usually have business in this thread, but what brings me here is Dos Gringos. Anyone here heard of them?

They are (were?) a pair of US Air Force F-16 pilots who decided to modernize the tradition of airmen writing and singing about life and times in the air force both on and off duty, in war and in peace. They've put out three studio albums and one live record so far - their last release came out in 2012.
I don't know where they are now, but their stuff has some great tunes both honoring and satirizing what it's like to be an airman, everything from bombing Saddam to cheating girlfriends and eccentric characters in the squadron. And all of it is of course, lyrically, raunchy as fuck.
Of course, how could we ever forget the classic of I'm A Pilot?

I don't give a fuck
If I bring back your jet
Code two or Code threeeeeeeeeeeee
CUZ I'M A PILOT
Nah, I'm near Tokyo. Sometimes I wish I was in Misawa. Guaranteed a nice off base house nowadays, get to enjoy mountains and Hokkaidō more easily, and it'd be quieter than Tokyo. They both have pros and cons for different people though.
Thank you for the advice. It would be easy to get on a Bachelors of Science with UMUC, and I suppose there's a reason they're everywhere and alot of people use them. They're extremely military friendly.
I lived in southern Yokohama for half and the other in Kyushu, Tokyo ain't bad I really miss it but I enjoy both for separate reasons. But yeah, out in town housing is the fucking shit though.

Anyway yeah, if you can get a BS in Science via TA do it. Understand your GI bill only goes so far, weather you have 1 year of school left or 4 your GI bill will get you a degree so since TA is unrelated to your GI bill you'd get the most milage if you got two bachelor's separately one now and then when you get out you can milk that sweet, sweet benefits gravy train to a second degree in a area you're most interested in (since UMUC is so limited).
Done. Congratulations my man!
Academy is seeming like less of an option: maybe its for the best. My relatives were ecstatic about me considering it because they're on the East coast. Still, there is ROTC. And there's no better place for CS than California.
Where to next?
