A pleasantly surprising or depressing little map, depending on what European country you live in https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DqsIUKDWsAA9iWi.jpg:large

I like how latvia is essentially like "well sure, we'll grant we suck. But islam, boy howdy"
Speaking of Japan, why didn't the European nations go after Japan the same way they did with China before the U.S forced Japan to open its ports?
I’m pretty sure it’s because the Dutch got there first and already established a pretty good trade relationship, so other nations probably didn’t feel like it was necessary.
The US wasn't the only one that tried it. 26 attempts were made before commodore Perry succeeded. Russian, French, American, British and Portuguese naval forces tried to force the ports open unsuccessfully. And meanwhile the Dutch had no problem trading with Japan.

Slight correction on the last one on the first row: at the bottom it says 'Vote red' and then SDAP is just there for clarity And I think a slightly better translation of 'hinweg damit' on the SPD one would be 'away with it'
Currently making some promotional posters for a WW2 short film im going to be making this year for finals at university story is a 15 minute short about a lone wounded german soldier who stumbles across a cabin among the bocage of normandy, which is inhabited by a female french resistance member (who's name is gisette, though a work in progress name/title) they both pretty much find a small moment of peace in a world falling a part around them I was going for that wartime poster style, which I was kinda inspired by after seeing a bunch of posts on this thread a few months back, I also used heavy inspiration off another poster from the war. - https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/111005/7e28ad09-4f9f-4d42-a36b-696695b2aa2a/Untitled-1.jpg https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/111005/7ed7109a-1236-48fd-ba8c-4ff216569c67/2341dba11ac76a4bd70a7fc7f0a70c53.png If any of you guys have any rarer french/polish posters for resistance, that would be fantastic! (also if any french speaking, or anyone for that matter want to help out on some slogans/quotes to whack on these posters, hit me up with some details of some sort, Im sure I'll add a name or two to the credits of the film ;) )

https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/110097/8d7a3ca2-04a9-4fa0-b8c4-51226901d031/image.png One of the few pictures of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor. The photograph was taken in 1857, with the Emperor being eighty-one; he is seen here shortly before being sent into exile in Burma, where he would die five years later. While during his life his power was limited to Delhi, he found himself suddenly swept up when the Sepoys marched on his city during the Indian Rebellion, with some even declaring him the Emperor of India. Sources describe him as being conflicted about the whole affair, but he ultimately offered his hesitant support for the movement. The situation quickly got out of hand in the city, with issues such as internal conflict, poor conduct among the ranks, and supply troubles. Things truly came to a head with the execution of fifty-two Europeans inside the palace, something which he protested. While Zafar had no direct control of the occurrences, he was still ultimately implicated during his later trial, something which may have ultimately been planned by some of the executioners who did not support him. He had a real knack for Urdu poetry. It's difficult to find good sources of his work, as much of it was destroyed during the Rebellion, but he was said to have written this verse on his defeat: غازیوں میں بو رھےگی جب تلک ایمان کی تخت لندن تک چلےگی تیغ ھندوستان کی Ghāzioń méń bū rahegi jab talak imān ki; Takht-e-London tak chalegi tégh Hindustan ki As long as there remains the scent of faith in the hearts of our Ghazis, so long shall the Talwar of Hindustan flash before the throne of London While he ultimately survived the troubles, he had the misfortune of having the severed heads of two sons and a grandson, all of whom were guaranteed their safety, only to be summarily executed as a show of force before a gathering crowd. This is to say nothing of his other family, many of whom were killed, imprisoned, or also exiled. There is little to note about his quiet final years, save for penning his epitaph which does well to sum things up: My heart has no repose in this despoiled land Who has ever felt fulfilled in this futile world? The nightingale complains about neither the sentinel nor the hunter Fate had decreed imprisonment during the harvest of spring Tell these longings to go dwell elsewhere What space is there for them in this besmirched heart? Sitting on a branch of flowers, the nightingale rejoices It has strewn thorns in the garden of my heart I asked for a long life, I received four days Two passed in desire, two in waiting. The days of life are over, evening has fallen I shall sleep, legs outstretched, in my tomb How unfortunate is Zafar! For his burial Not even two yards of land were to be had, in the land of his beloved.
Took pictures with the HMS Queen Elizabeth for rememberance day. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/109898/ff74885b-b6c7-4a50-94d0-0c08730f70e2/181111-N-ZZ999-0001.jpg
