LONG LIVE THE WORLD SOCIALIST REVOLUTION!
Soviet Poster, late 20s.
stalin's social realism ruined soviet art
Why is communist/socialist propaganda always so damn good looking
They didn't have technology for printing it with more colors so they had to get creative with their limited printing process. You'll notice this happening for the entire duration of USSR, up until the end of it they never really mastered multi-color printing in a way that would be fitting for mass printing.
When fervent internationalism meets revolutionary zeal all under a dictatorship which emphasized modernity, you're bound to get some good shit in there
My guess is there's a much higher premium these days on making psychologically effective/persuasive imagery than on hiring a talented artist to make something impressive
Since people liked my last Soviet Poster, i've a bunch of them from my hard drive. If you guys want to see more let me know. Long as fuck post btw.

the sales pitch on this must have been amazing
what if we took the bad things... and..... made them into.............. good things
who would look at any of these caricatures and go "yes, that is me. the british army requires binge gamers. i will be a binge gamer in service of the crown."
???
We only dredge up the good stuff. 95% of that stuff is subnormal junk, but they had so many talented artists under their thumb that the remaining 5% is tragically transcendent brilliance, wasted on totalitarian propogandism.

Tham Khoun Xe, commonly known as the Xe Bang Fai River Cave, in Laos has more than 15 kilometers of passages and wide expanses of water. The cave is formed by the Xe Bang Fai River and in the dry season can be traversed using inflatable kayaks. The Giant Gour, a rimstone basin in the Oxbow area of the cave, is shown here, photographed in March 2015. The pool is filled with water during the wet season, and the rims of basins like this grow taller each year as calcite precipitates from cave water as it flows more quickly over protrusions. #

The New Hampshire jail is the first in the state to partner prisoners with the "Hero Pups" program to foster and train puppies with the goal of placing them with military veterans and first responders in need of support dogs. #
Hey I grew up next door to that jail. Very bizarre to see my tiny little hometown name-dropped on an internet forum
That 1309 test was like six months ago, and it's been radio silence ever since.
I'm really happy it's being restored because it's such a significant locomotive, but goddamn did they ever bite off more than they could chew. Hopefully it comes out alright.
wtf I'm like a five minute drive away from that jail.

Grozny, 1995

A comment sums this up fairly well:
"According to an article, Alik was Ivan Savin, a Russian Colonel who sent 1,000 of his men to what I think would have been the Central railway station to capture it. As heard in this clip a Chechen commander Turpal Ali Atgeriyev tries to console with Alik in an attempt to stop the attack. Alik refused because he was under orders and the attack went underway. While the battalion secured the perimeter with vehicles, a radioman heard the words 'Welcome to hell' on his headset before the battalion was attacked with automatic and RPG weapons fire. Alik called for support multiple times with his friends on the line inside the station building but nothing came. With most of the 1,000 he died fighting."
Not entirely sure how truthful that is, it's difficult to find good English sources, there's debate whether or not Atgeriyev is the Chechen commander communicating. Later on in the video you can hear Colonel Savin frantically radioing for support which would never come. Either way, it's pretty haunting, both men were clearly familiar with each other, perhaps even before the conflict. It's as if each man knew the inevitable score; Colonel Savin would succumb to shrapnel wounds attempting to escape Grozny in an APC, and Atgeriyev would die a few years later under the suspicious circumstances "leukemia related internal bleeding" in prison.
Savin's call for support, but here's a video with similar circumstances
