do you not understand what criticism is or something
The emoticon thread on the old forum was one fucking great thread I'm all up for seeing what happens
Won't ever happen. It's easier to talk shit than to try to make things better.
I don't even care about the thread icons (they don't look great), I'm just looking for confirmation for if we're ever going to get the Validation Trackerâ„¢ back. Being able to see who has rated me where was really useful depending on the discussion.
We've already stated valid design reasons why the current set don't exactly do any justice, unless you have any better ideas It's easy to talk shit if people don't like them, but coming from people that actually do have backgrounds in design is worthwhile advice
If Garry wants an out-of-the-box solution for icons (without any potential licensing issues, unlike with MS emojis) how about using Twemoji? https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1195/83c787c5-fe23-4050-97e4-88ad082df0de/664565vs.png open source, very relaxed license png and svg flat colors no black outline consistent looks decent (imo) Just as with MS Emojis, I'm sure there are people here (including myself) who could help creating any missing ones.
People submitted profile icons and emotes for oldpunch, I'm sure someone would be inclined to make some icons if they had some indication they'd be considered
There's a huge effort gap between saying something doesn't work and making something that does work, no matter how valid those reasons are.
The community has made emoticons to replace the ones from SA in the past. I think it would be pretty neat to see community made emoji/icons in that style. I bet someone would step up and do it.
You won't even let the community try in the first place.
How could I possibly stop them?
How much effort would it be to just use the thread icons from before? Because I legitimately thought this was a joke https://i.imgur.com/VaiQwws.png And I'm still not convinced you aren't just fucking with us. These look like they were made by a middle schooler
I mean the question is if you'd consider a community sourced alternative if one was successfully organized. We previously did a bunch of emoticons that got added on the vB board, it was a pretty fun community thing. I think it could be done again.
Sorry I guess my post comes off as confrontational. I just noticed there weren't any positive comments - given the great new changes and the (relative) triviality of the criticism at hand, I couldn't help but have a laugh because it's very in-character of Facepunch . I don't think the criticism is dumb or anything, I even agree that the icons could be better, I'm just happy enough about the changes that matter to not really mind them right now.
The issue with people making icons is that we need them to make them all. If 3 icons get changed it's no good. The idea with choosing an icon pack is that there are shitloads of icons, all in matching style. We don't have to ask people to make them if we're adding a new feature. So yes, if people want to make icons they can, but it has to be all or nothing.
Maybe have all the icons done by css class so people can overwrite them and produce their own "community pack" of replacement images.
the art style of the new icons is soooo bad :(
Just as an anecdote, people were good at making all the custom FP emoji fit one art style in that one thread Postal organized to replace the SA emoticon set. If you look at the Oldpunch emoji set, there were a large body of different artists that all voted on one common "template/artstyle" and made varying emoji in that style. I think the community you have cultivated over the years would definitely be savy enough to make such an effort work if they had the affirmation that good results would indeed ve at least considered.
Do any moderators want to organize this? @postal ?
You already can without needing garry to patch support in
not for ratings - unless you wanna go digging in the mud using fancy pants selectors
someone will use a css compiler I bet
I've also noticed that most of the icons aren't that bad, it's mostly the faces. I like the faded colors but outlines are definitely too thin (On my 1600x900 screen they are really hard to see) I would bring back the old ones and improve the new ones more before getting them on forum again.
Yeah I prefer beefy outlines too. This pack is annoying in that the border gets thinner the higher the resolution is. https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1/9f4ab1b7-4135-4f86-ae39-4f9a0d85398b/icons8-broccoli-30.png https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1/3a7810c9-cc52-4b31-a883-c88a5f8caa90/icons8-broccoli-80.png
https://files.facepunch.com/forum/upload/1826/9a14609d-7a6f-42bf-8552-1fcc0a4f67ee/image.png These icons make the single notification window work really well.
It's certainly less chaotic than before. A dedicated (optional) notifications page similar to the user control panel on the old site would be rather convenient though.
How about putting it to a set of votes, people can submit a tender of a few example icons, and the community could decide on which ones they like to have.
Been thinking about a rework for subscriptions but not enough to compile a plan. But even if it were something like a View More button to a page listing subscriptions to even manage them etc. Basic premise to build off/refine, but it will make navigation to subscribed threads easier
At the very least Garry should reconsider the limit on displayed notifications. Apparently it's only 30 now. When I first came to the site today I had something like 58 or 59 notifications meaning almost half of them couldn't even display.
@garry , just curious, since you seemingly had to spend money on the icons, which I do like for the most part. There's a whole community here of really good artists that could pop out probably all the necessary icons in less than a month, do you not want to use their content instead because of reasons that are legal (crediting artists, rights to work, etc.) or ethical (choosing one community member's art over another, creating drama/conflict between artists) or personal? (not wanting to interact with the community in that kind of intimate way, wanting to keep Facepunch has a site independent of too much user influence, not wanting users to see what's behind the scenes too much)
