So you're saying that the content posted is what is the problem, not the fact that content is being posted automatically?
If we could ensure the content was correct, wasn't floods of it, would that be fine?
News that isn't of the "general" variety should be posted within the respective forum. Film news goes into the film forum for example.
For your example, how about this solution?
You have a MGS section, where people post their thoughts about MGS. This is of course filterable by the general population of the forums. Within the MGS section you'll have threads about all the games there, threads about using different tactics, how to beat each boss, etc. You'll also have threads where news articles about MGS are posted.
Would that be a suitable solution?
Perhaps having a news tag/subforum in each section would work.
That way you still have gaming news in the games section but it can be filtered and made easier to find/hide.
Why not subscribe to the TV and Movies sections? Then you will see the threads.
It'd be great, but once again the problem here is that there are a bunch of Niche games I am into that don't have threads here.
And sure posting in GGD is fine but it would be flooded away by the more popular Game threads and their respective News threads.
Also unrelated but still a point I'd like to expand on.
I go to the Film/Movie section fairly often so I want to use a hyperbole example.
I am not interested in Star Wars, but if I see a Star Wars thread in SH, I'll open it and take a look, maybe voice my opinion.
But with this new change, I won't look at anything Star Wars related unless it's game related.
Disconnecting myself from the rest of the Star War fans community on this site.
A movie franchise I could potentially love, and come here to talk about, completely ignored because I don't want to go to the Film/Movie section.
You aren't giving people a reason to go to another Section they may not browse regularly, you're giving them a reason to stay in a specific section, and to never leave it.
Assuming that'd be possible, I'd still prefer having the option of filtering it out if I'm so inclined
So this Q&A thread has been mostly a gaming-news bitching thread so sorry if I'm just adding onto that, but I'm not sure I really see where you're coming from, Hezzy. It doesn't help that some of your answers to good posts have been a bit short.
You've made it clear that simply, "SH is for general news." But to everyone else, this seems like a sudden change. Like, this is a new rule that is being instated now. But you're claiming that in truth, this was always the intention of SH. If so, fair enough, but I hope the team can understand why this can be a little confusing to regular users who see this as primarily a gaming forum, where it would make logical sense to see gaming news in the news section.
I'm among the people who will probably miss out on news stories surrounding games I don't usually browse, but I'm willing to give this system a try without bitching too much regardless. I just hope, if it doesn't work, garry will realize that some aspects of the forum should be dictated by how they are actually used and now how he would like them to be used, and splitting up (pretty minimal) gaming news content across all the forums may be an example of this.
Of course, this would all be solved by a separate child forum in the GGD dedicated for news, which as I understand it, is being considered over the weekend.
Honestly you could go further and bring child forums to SH. Then if people don't want to see gaming content they can filter it out. Throw in a politics, tech, movies/tv, environmental, and etc news child forums also and then people can refine SH to their tastes. Idk just a idea i had on the spot
I moved 4 threads from SH to Film and TV so I don't think it's going to make a massive difference in the long run.
I don't understand the example you're using. You say that you visit the Film section regularly but later say that you won't get to see Star Wars threads because you don't want to go to the film section.
It's very simple, if you're interested in films (Star Wars, Star Trek, whatever) you should look in the relevant forum for news, debate and discussion for your area of interest.
SH was never intended to be a general dumping ground for news of all types. It was always meant to be for general news, examples of which I've given in a previous post.
Because I don't want to be notified of every single TV or Movie thread, nor do I want notifications for these news threads showing up in my inbox.
Are there any plans to make it so that clicking on a thread from the front page goes to the last read post instead of page 1?
Now that I think about it, it would give the TV and Movies section a much needed boost.
That is hell a lot of legwork tho, I'm not going to subscribe to every forum, because the Alerts:
Do not give enough information on whether a topic is interesting or not. I rely on view and post count.
Has a limit of 30(?). A day offline and it would be completely overflowed.
often reserved and prioritized for more interesting threads.
Kinda opposite of what other platforms are moving towards.
Others prioritize convenience, providing a landing page where users are only exposed to those of their liking. Meanwhile, Facepunch looks to decentralize.
Sorry, I don't mean to derail this thread any further.
I responded to your response in that thread.
Just thought I'd let you know.
Anyway a question I do have is, can we Tag images to make them smaller?
May I suggest people to bring their attention to this
Creating / Bumping requests threads are the best way to get them noticed. Being buried in this thread doesn't do it any justice when you have several different topics flying around at once
I apologize if this question has been addressed before, but is there any word on whether or not ratings may reappear in the alerts feed? Or if the alerts feed will see further revision in general? It's a very welcome feature, but I liked it's initial iteration a lot more than the current one.
Any chance Garry will remove the limit on displayed notifications? Having it limited to 30 at once makes it a bigger pain to sort through notifications. There are some notifications (the Awfully White thread for example) which I consider high priority but when I have 50-70 notifications on the site when I get to it each day there's no guarantee at all that the notification will actually display until I've gone through half or more of my notifications.
It honestly seems a bit counterproductive when Garry wants to encourage people to use the new subscription system more.
All I want in this forum right now is way to clear my reply box
Because if I tap on someone's reply box, that shit still ain't coming off until I click post
Android is such a hassle, but it's all I have.
I've said this a million times. Replacing PC Gamer isn't going to change anything. A new bot will come in and people will like it for five minutes then one shit article is published and then the entire community goes apeshit for its removal.
Can we at least have a "news" tag on the games/tv subforums? Shit will get buried so fast from constant megathread posting.
Maybe go to the TV or Movies section?
this is probably the lamest approach to moderation I know of - overmoderation and overspecialization of categories.
What exactly is wrong with allowing news to be posted to multiple forums? Gaming news can and should be posted to GGD, but why not allow it to be posted to SH as well?
Also, there are other classes of news that this policy doesn't seem to be applying to. There's all kinds of news about shit Intel, AMD and Nvidia are developing posted to SH, are we going to force those to be posted to H&S?
I also mentioned this already
Why not just have a nexus forum what will mirror link to news threads posted throughout the different sections. Everybody wins.
What is the ETA for the popular page? It was my bookmark for oldpunch
I get what you mean but think about it this way
In the old system, people come to SH and they see all sorts of shit: gaming, tech, world affairs, celebrity shit, sports, music, movies. I like SH because you're forcibly exposed to a lot of stuff that you might not think you care about, but hey this OP is gonna show you why it's interesting. Personally I'm not gonna go to a fashion news site but if someone posted fashion news in SH yeah fuck it I'll see what's going on.
In the new system, people who are interested in gaming news go to the gaming section and only see gaming news. People who like movies go to their own section and see movie news. I worry that this just creates a different form of the same problem: "people having their own little corner of the forum and neglecting the rest".
Some people want to see all gaming threads, including news. Others (like me) want to see all news threads, including games. (Games is just an example, insert any interest)
I've got two alternative ideas
Just add subforums to SH - people who want to use SH the old way can just leave all subforums enabled. People who want it more filtered can disable certain sections or go into them individually. But the problem is that everyone's still in SH and the other sections aren't being used like you want. So gotta come up with some more creative bullshit, hence idea #2
Some kind of new tagging/subscription/aggregation stuff - The gaming news goes in the games section, but you can tag the thread as news or give it a 'news' threadicon that people can subscribe to, or something. Games section gets filled with gaming news, but people can sub to all news. Maybe news threads from across the forums even show up in SH if you want them to. Some shit like this, could have applications outside news as well, sub to 'topics' from across the forum. But the upshot is that there's still a master 'News' section of some sort that you can use to see all the news from everywhere.

Is there a possible chance of us getting the ratings back in our feed again? Probably stupid of me to ask for it back, but I like to see what people think about the posts I've done in places like LAMO pics or something.
I like the look of the ratings except for Cute and Artistic. I think the color pallete was a better and more iconic "artistic" indicator - having bucket of paint is bit silly and doesn't stand out on its own.
And I have no idea why Cupcake is cute. An animal worked better imo
How many reports does it take for something to show up in moderation?
Just the one.
