For the time being just use common sense. If you see someone overtly trolling it's not like the report button is going to instaban you. We see the reports and we'll make a call.
Is the functionality not there to block/hide a user and their posts? I can't seem to find the feature, if it exists. I'd love to not have to see the PCGamer FeedBot's posts if i didn't have to. Gotta find a way to browse these forums, despite garry's best efforts to make that impossible.
We need to drop this attitude of "This is X, so it will be X forever" The forum is always a work in progress and garry will be trying to new things. If it doesn't work, then he'll take that feedback on board and try a different approach. When I spoke to him about the report system, he said he wants to use it primarily for illegal / hurtful content rather than users telling tales on other users.
This seems like a really poor decision. The whole chunk of time before he implemented the report system is kinda proof that we need a report system. Mods can't realistically be expected to browse every single thread so things that are blatantly bannable do get overlooked and fairly often. I said this in another thread but I remember seeing a number of people flame others in SH or Polidicks over the past month or so and none of them ever got banned for it. More than anything, this decision is most likely just going to result in nobody bothering to report anything at all or ignoring those weird limitations on reports and reporting like they normally would.
I just wish Garry would ever explain why he makes these changes. This is just confusing for everyone.
Here's what he posted in the other thread; "Report spamming and illegal stuff. The moderators are the police, not your school teacher or mom." "You guys only want a rules list so you can catch other people breaking the rules. Why don't you just use your common sense and act accordingly. Same goes for moderators. "
I'm willing to give it a try, but something tells me we're going to get another Tudd and not be able to do anything about it.
A rules list keeps both users and moderators accountable. It keeps expectations of users and moderators clear. Garry’s reasoning is retarded.
This just makes the rules harder to enforce, and makes it harder to maintain a high standard of posting. I don't agree with Garry's reasoning at all.
report only spamming/illegal stuff, so what about things like flaming, trolling/baiting, biased sources, opinion pieces or memeposting shit. Everyone has a different sense of common sense, and things that fly at reddit or 4chan doesn't fly here and vice versa. It's just going to end up in mods banning for arbitrary personal reasons, and it becomes a mine field of figuring out where the limits are.
I'm just guessing all that shit flies here now. If that's the case, I wish the rules page would be changed accordingly
Don't act like it's our fault for being impatient when the people in charge aren't even willing to respond to detailed constructive feedback with anything more than sarcastic one sentence posts, newsbots clogging entire sections has been unanimously hated and 10 days later there's no sign that garry is willing to even consider changing that I'm still waiting for what kind of reasoning is behind auto locking threads if popular threads are meant to naturally remain on the front page despite the amount of throwaway news threads
I just find it funny how Garry is changing the site to make it easier for drawing more people in, but in fact is jut pushing everyone away.
the "new" badge is the nickelodeon logo. no need to deny it
To be frank this has literally been the mentality of folks whenever Garry has made a big change. If we really want to start getting into the nitty gritty originally newpunch was going to be similar to Reddit, with very minimal moderator input and the forum style weeding out any ShitPosting by itself. Obviously that was not the direction it went, as Garry decided that it wasn't going to work. A lot of this sort of thing is somewhat trial and error. We used to have an auto ban system in place that would ban you for using certain words or phrases, that went away because it didn't work in the long run. The same can be said about the smartness system and it's grammar detection. Don't get so hung up like all of this is all of a sudden set in stone. Garry puts these types of things into place because he thinks its going to work, and if it doesn't work he takes them out. He sees what you are all writing, he also sees the big picture of the forums as well as his company and games. Give his changes a chance, and if it doesn't work out he'll be the one to fix it as he always has. It might not be as quick as you all would like it to, but over the last 13 years I think I can say with confidence that he will do it.
There are better ways to reinforce you want this forum to mellow out. It's the admin & mod team as a whole to be the police for what isn't allowed. Then passively act janitorial and/or community leaders. Being a bad forum mom means taking things personally and we already give those mods the boot. If you just want mods just to be the police for illegal shit by choking the report function, that's not a forum test change. that's knocking out several pillars. Changing reports for whatever reason changes a ton of dynamic that I dearly wished wasn't even fucked atm without lengthy consideration. It's a tool tested and proven useful. Never discourage people not to report even if they're wrong. Normal reporting should stay, what things mods have to do/change should be done behind that.
honestly I'm a little confused about it too but I'm not very heavy handed with moderation anyway so this affects the others probably more than it affects me but we don't really have eyes everywhere, especially since we're volunteer and stuff, so we can't devote all day to browsing to see what's goin on. that's why the report system helped us keep things cleaned up but idk I guess it depends on if we're still enforcing the same rules or not!

Yet the PCGamer bot is still flooding the Games forum, and Garry's response to complaints about the removal of moderating is this: https://puu.sh/AOMkT/d090d576bf.png I don't think I've seen a community owner show such contempt for users. It feels like my thread about the disconnect between users and management is still completely true.
Oh I'm not saying it isn't. The one thing you have to understand is this is Garry's forum. He can do whatever he wants. He pays the bills, he made the games, and if he wants to be a prick he's well within his right to. Why you might ask? Because a lot of people seem to think he owes them something, whether it be a certain function or ability or whatever. Garry doesn't owe any of us anything, including myself and other decade plus users. We came to Garry to build the community, not the other way around, and while you can argue we as a community is what makes up the forum ultimately the form would have never existed if Garry never made it. And when there's a lot of people personally attacking him over shit on this forum he is much less inclined to do anything about it. Like I said, if he thinks his decisions were incorrect he'll fix them. It might not be as fast as you want, or whoever wants, but if he thinks it needs t change he'll do it. The forum is not his top priority; he has a company, a family, and god knows what other obligations that come first.
Just because something is within someone’s right to do doesn’t mean it’s actually something you should do.
I completely agree, it's well within his right to do that. But that doesn't mean I have to like it, and it doesn't mean I have to approve of changes that I feel make the forum worse as a whole. Garry doesn't owe me anything at all. That said, I think his changes are detrimental to the overall health of the forum. I care about the forum, and that's why I push back against several of these changes. Not because Garry should bend to my will, but because I think that these changes make the forum a worse place for everyone, and I want the forums to be better for everyone. Does Garry have to listen? No! But does that mean I should not voice my concerns?
It just doesn't feel like this sentiment entirely rings true. If Garry truly wants to listen to our concerns then he needs to understand that drastic changes will result in drastic reactions, be it positive or negative. He can't get pissy every time an unpopular change nets a negative reaction, but still insist we all need to air out our concerns. If Garry was dismissing everyone's complaints with "this is my forum idc", that'd be fair enough, I think we'd all get the idea that our suggestions and criticism aren't welcome, but Garry and the community team are being incredibly proactive with listening to feedback and suggestions. We have this open line to Garry to provide our thoughts and feedback, but seemingly only if that feedback is very tame and well constructed. It seems to me Garry dislikes hyperbolic overreaction to certain features being pushed. No one likes overreaction. But he's been running this website for more than a decade, he needs to have thicker skin than that. You can't have both the "this is my forum, I'll do whatever the hell I want with it" and the "Please provide feedback and criticism so I can keep building this site to be something great!" mindsets at the same time.
Perhaps more flaming bans need to be issued? Wait...
This is sort of concerning. It feels like Garry could just decide to kill the forums on a whim one day.
What position is your avatar relative to your background image? I want to make one of those cool in sync ones
Well, he DID consider that instead of creating Newpunch.
