Though nobody can with certainty explain exactly what happened, history reveals that the Bumfuque dynasty, which rose to prominence in 769 AD, rising from counts of a poor and decrepit county in modern France, to Kings of France and eventually emperors of a realm that stretched from Iceland to Mali, to India and to the steppes, suddenly and without explanation fell from grace in 1453 AD. The then reigning God-Emperor, popularly known as Charles XXX 'the Glorious', was apparently struck by some manner of debilitating mental illness on January 1st of that year, after which the realm disintegrated with record speed. Independence revolts sprung up across the entirety of the realm, and the crown passed between dozens of rulers of different dynasties, each one less competent than the last, after so securely having been held by the Bumfuque dynasty for close to 700 years.
As the dust settled some thirty years later, the known world was composed of thousands of small, warring, independent fiefs which slowly coagulated into the nation-states of today.
